This is a list of Roman Catholic basilicas.

[edit] Major Basilicas

There are only four major basilicas, all in Rome:

St. John Lateran is the cathedral of the Pope as Bishop of Rome.
St. Peter's Basilica is used by the Pope as the head of the Roman Catholic Church
St. Paul outside the Walls is assigned to the Patriarch of Alexandria
St. Mary Major was formerly assigned to the Patriarch of Antioch

The majority of basilicas are termed "minor basilicas". Some of these basilicas are also cathedrals (seats of dioceses). The date in brackets is the year that the church was created a basilica.
