- 1896 Otto Lilienthal on a glider in Germany on August 10, 1896

- 1905 Daniel Maloney in a glider in Santa Clara, California on July 18, 1905

- 1908 Lieutenant Thomas Selfridge in Fort Myer, Virginia was the first person to die in a powered aircraft on September 17, 1908. Piloting was Orville Wright. He was the first US Army air casualty, but not the first pilot to die in a crash.
