List of ambiguous patriotic songs
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An ambiguous patriotic song is a song about one's country that does not preach the traditional themes of a strictly patriotic song, yet lacks the harsh, directly critical nature of a protest song.
Such songs almost always have words. Some may be thought-provoking, ironic, partisan, sorrowful, wistful, or merely humorous. Others (such as Take Me Out to the Ball Game) refer to one's country only in distant metaphor. Many are parodies, which may or may not be intended seriously. One theme often encountered is the human cost of warfare, past or present; another is nostalgia for the defeated side of a past civil war.
This list is a counterpart to two other Wikipedia lists, List of patriotic songs and List of protest songs, and it is positioned between those two.
