Auglaize County, Ohio: Auglaize is named for the Auglaize River, auglaize being a Native American word for fallen timbers.
Cottonwood County, Minnesota is named after the Cottonwood River, which flows through the county.
Boise County, Idaho: Boise is named for the Boise River. Boisé is French for wooded.
Pinellas County, Florida: Pinellas is named from the Spanish words Punta Piñal ("Point of Pines" or "Piney Point").
Racine County: Racine is named for the Root River, racine being the French word for root.
Sunflower County, Mississippi: Sunflower is named for the Sunflower River, which was named in turn for the sunflowers that grow along its banks.
Taos County, New Mexico: Taos is named for its county seat of Taos, New Mexico, which in turn was named for the nearby Taos Pueblo, an ancient Native American village. Taos is red willow in the Tiwa language.

Pembina County: Pembina is possibly named for the high-bush cranberries which grew wild in the area. Pembina may be from an Ojibwa phrase, anepeminan sipi, referring to the berries, as they grew in abundance around the Redberry River; it may also be from an Ojibwa word meaning meeting place. The name originally applied to the old Pembina Territory.
Yuba County, California: Yuba is named for possibly a corruption of the Spanish word uvas (grapes), wild grapes having grown abundantly in the area. Alternately, it may be a Native American tribe of the Maidu people named Yu-ba.
