List of Suikoden IV characters
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a list of characters in the game Suikoden IV. Some of these characters also appear in its successor, Suikoden Tactics.
[edit] Lazlo
Lazlo is the name given for the hero of Suikoden IV in its novelization. He is the silent protagonist of Suikoden IV and 19 years old during it; if all 108 Stars of Destiny are acquired and the save data is imported, he can be acquired in Suikoden Tactics as well.
Born in the Kingdom of Obel to King Lino en Kuldes and his wife, Lazlo was lost at sea after his mother unleashed the power of the Rune of Punishment to drive away a gang of pirates. Miraculously, he survived and washed up on the shores of Razril, where he was adopted by the town’s lord, Vincent Vingerhut, as a playmate for his son, Snowe. With Snowe, he began military training to become a Knight of Gaien under the command of Glen Cott. Excelling as a soldier, he was favored by Glen, yet he was overshadowed by Snowe, who was given special treatment due to his father’s status.
Shortly after graduating from the academy, he and Snowe were given the mission to escort a man named Ramada, as well as his cargo, to Illuya Island. On the way, they were attacked by the infamous Pirate Brandeau, who had come to inherit the Rune of Punishment. Snowe fled the ship as Lazlo faced Brandeau in battle, defeating him. However, just as the Rune of Punishment was leaving Brandeau’s body, Glen intervened and took the Rune.
Soon after, a gang of pirates attacked Razril, and Glen was forced to use the Rune to repel the invaders. Despite having ordered no one to come near him out of fear that someone else would inherit the Rune, Lazlo rushed to the commander’s aid and finally inherited the Rune. Collapsing, he was found by Snowe, who believed he had murdered Glen. Exiled from Razril and never to return, Lazlo was set adrift in a tiny boat, accompanied by two of his friends from the academy (the player chooses between Keneth, Jewel, Tal, and Paula) and the Nay-Kobold Chiepoo. Encountering the renowned Kooluk Naval General Troy, the four eventually were picked up by a rescue ship from the Kingdom of Obel. There, he was unknowingly reunited with Lino and his sister Flare, and agreed to help them repel the Kooluk, who were aiming to expand their territory into the Islands.
Kooluk eventually attacked Obel, forcing Lazlo and his companions to flee in a ship Lino had had built for this very occasion. After leaving Obel, Lazlo and the others made an alliance with the Pirate Queen Kika and her gang, but were attacked by Snowe, who had allied himself with the Kooluk. After defeating him, and at the suggestion of Kika, Lazlo recruited the famous strategist Elenor Silverberg.
With Elenor’s help, Lazlo succeeded in liberating the remaining Islands from Kooluk influence, collecting the 108 Stars of Destiny along the way. Eventually, he came into contact with Snowe two more times, finally forgiving his friend and accepting him back into his life. With this act of mercy, the Rune of Punishment accepted Lazlo as its master and switched into its Forgiveness Phase where it no longer drained his life. At the war’s end, Lazlo and his army attacked Fort El-Eal and defeated the Kooluk navy once and for all. However, a huge Rune Cannon discharge caused the army to nearly be killed. With one final act, Lazlo used the Rune’s power to stop the blast at the cost of his own life.
His body put in a funeral boat and cast off to sea, Lazlo was resurrected by the Rune of Punishment in time to see a ship passing by. It is presumed Lazlo was picked up by the ship, as he is secret recruitable character in Suikoden Tactics (along with Snowe) if the player loads a Suikoden IV file with all 108 Stars of Destiny.
In Suikoden Tactics, Kika hints at Lino's intention to make Lazlo his own son.
Lazlo uses dual swords in battle.
[edit] Lino En Kuldes
Lino En Kuldes is the king of Obel and 45 years old during the events of Suikoden IV. He is the father of Flare En Kuldes, and, though it is not made obvious in Suikoden IV, the father of Lazlo as well. At the end of Suikoden IV, he declares himself the ruler of a new Island Nations Federation rather than just Obel.
In Suikoden V, it is revealed that following the formation of the Island Nations Federation, the flagship of the Federation navy would always be named after Lino En Kuldes. This tradition is still in practice as far as at least Solar Year 449 (when Suikoden V takes place).
Lino uses a spear for his weapon.
[edit] Elenor Silverberg
Elenor Silverberg is the main strategist for the Island Nations and a descendant of Julian Silverberg. She is 56 years old and from the Scarlet Moon Empire.
Later Silverbergs include Leon Silverberg, George Silverberg, Mathiu Silverberg, Odessa Silverberg, Albert Silverberg, and Caesar Silverberg.
[edit] Snowe Vingerhut
Snowe is the son of Vincent Vingerhut, the Duke of Razril. He and Lazlo have been good friends since childhood, with Lazlo an adopted brother of sorts. However, Snowe has also been jealous of Lazlo's success, and Lazlo's tendency of showing Snowe up. He accuses Lazlo of Glen Cott's death (actually due to the Rune of Punishment), perhaps to get him out of the way; as the son of the Duke, his word is taken over Lazlo's. Snowe eventually ends up aiding the Kooluk out of desperation; after this fails, Lazlo may execute him, let him go, or ask him to join up. If asked to join up, he refuses. If let go, he falls in with some pirates shortly after. After this venture fails, Lazlo is offered the same choices, with the same results. If 107 Stars of Destiny have been recruited, eventually Snowe is found on a plank, with nothing left in the world. If challenged at this point, Snowe will agree to join up and be reunited with Lazlo.
Snowe is 19 during Suikoden IV. He uses a one-handed sword he received from his father and a Water Rune in battle.
[edit] Ted
Ted is the current bearer of the feared Soul Eater Rune, originally seen in the first Suikoden.
[edit] Schtolteheim Reinbach III
Schtolteheim Reinbach III (シュトルテハイム・ラインバッハ3世, Shutorutehaimu Rainbahha-sansei) is a foppish but good-hearted man. His father, Schtolteheim Reinbach II, is the Lord of Middleport. he bears the Red Rose Rune and is 30 years old.
After the war, Reinbach's loyal servant, Micky, wrote a highly fictionalized account of his master's exploits. The book would go on to become a classic. Likely because of this, Schtolteheim Reinbach III (and Schtolteheim Reinbach IV) became aliases used by various characters in other Suikoden games.
[edit] Chiepoo
Chiepoo is a Nay-Kobold from Nay Island who aspires to one day become a great merchant. He aids Lazlo while he is in exile on the Deserted Island, and is the main supplier of goods to Lazlo and his party. In Suikoden Tactics, he achieves his goal of success as a merchant.
Chiepoo uses his claws in battle, which are all named after real places that have cheeses named after them.
[edit] Knights of Razril
[edit] Glen Cott
Glen Cott is the captain of the knights of Gaien at the beginning of Suikoden IV. He is 54 years old and the father of Katarina Cott. He uses a sword as a weapon. He bore the Rune of Punishment for a short time after Brandeau, but was devoured by its power in destroying an attacking pirate fleet.
[edit] Katarina Cott
Katarina Cott is the daughter of Commander Glen Cott of the Knights of Razril. She is 31 years old during the events of Suikoden IV. When Glen tells Lazlo and Snowe of their mission to escort the trader Ramada to Iluya, Katarina tells Snowe to send a nasel bird if they run into any trouble. After the young Knights leave the room with Ramada, Glen chides Katarina for mentioning that in the presence of an outsider. Katarina takes care of Commander Glen and assumes active duty after he returns from rescuing Lazlo from the Pirate Brandeau, as Commander Glen has been injured and bedridden. She insists he stay and rest. During the second pirate attack, she accompanies Lazlo to repel the pirates. Before she leaves, however, Glen gives her a strict order: Until he says otherwise, no one is allowed to enter the Hall of Knights.
Katarina fights alongside Lazlo, but the pirate onslaught seems endless until a mysterious red light from the hall destroys the ships. In deference to Commander Glen's orders, Katarina orders the Knights to stay outside and assist with the injured. However, both Lazlo and Snowe enter the Hall. The next thing Katarina knows, Commander Glen has disintegrated into ash, and Snowe blames Lazlo for it. Katarina has little information to go on, but decides Lazlo's guilt. She orders him exiled from Razril and sets him on a small boat. As Lazlo disappears on the horizon, Katarina resigns herself to misery, resolving that no one can understand just how much Commander Glen's death affected her.
Snowe is instated as the new Commander, but he quickly forges a deal with the expanding and militant Kooluk Empire. He sells them the land of Razril in exchange for the freedom of the people there. During Kooluk's occupation, Katarina is forcefully questioned about her knowledge of pirate attacks on Kooluk forces. Although she knows nothing, she is tortured and abandoned in the ocean. She is recovered by the pirate Kika, who takes her to her hideout and treats her wounds. In the meantime, Lazlo, who just escaped from Obel with its King, Lino En Kuldes, has also saught Kika's assistance. When Lazlo comes to her hideout, he meets Katarina. She's amazed to find him alive. She tells him that there is no one left who wants to punish him because Razril has been sold to the Kooluk. She remains in the hideout recovering from her injuries after Lazlo's army joins with Kika's gang to repel Snowe's assault on the pirates' fortress.
After Lazlo gains the assistance of Elenor Silverberg, he returns to see Katarina at Kika's hideout. She asks him what really happened to Commander Glen. She learns that the Rune of Punishment, a cursed True Rune, was responsible. Using it was what caused the red light that destroyed the pirates at Razril, and what caused his subsequent death. After learning this, Katarina asks Lazlo if she could accompany his army.
After Lazlo's army crushed the Kooluk Southern Expansion Fleet, Katarina returned to Razril. Believing fervently in Glen's dream of a powerful Knighthood, she reforms the organization. Razril gains it's independence from Gaien, and Katarina becomes the first Commander of the new Knighthood, selecting Keneth to be her Vice-Commander. Katarina was actually the daughter of Commander Glen, which is why she was so deeply hurt by his death. The only person she had given this information to was an old friend of Glen's and Katarina's wizardly master, Konrad.
Katarina uses a rod in battle.

Notable trainees with Lazlo include Paula (ポーラ, Pōra), Jewel (ジュエル, Jueru), Tal (タル, Taru), and Keneth (ケネス, Kenesu). Paula is an elf and 17 years old. Jewel is 16 years old and bears a Water Rune. Hervey is best friends with Sigurd and can often be seen alongside him. The two are very dedicated to Kika and continue to support her after the war. He is 26 years old and uses a sword in battle.
[edit] Flare En Kuldes
Flare En Kuldes is the daughter of Lino En Kuldes and the sister of Lazlo. Flare, despite being Princess of Obel decided to patrol the surrounding seas, looking for pirates. Flare rescues Lazlo, Chiepoo, and two of his friends and took them back to Obel, therefore reuniting her family, and putting the wheels in motion for the Island Nations Forces. However, the family reunion was short-lived, as the Kooluk invaded the island, and Flare stayed behind with Gary and Ema, where as Lino and Lazlo went away in the ship. During the Island's liberation, following instructions from Elenor Silverberg which were delivered by Mizuki she helped the Hero's army retake Obel. After the war in Suikoden Tactics, she helped Kyril infiltrate the Kooluk, and afterwards returned to Obel.
Flare uses a bow and arrows in battle.

After the war ended, he succeeded his father as Island Chief of Na-Nal. He uses a sword in battle.
[edit] Helga
Helga is a rather muscular woman who unintentionally destroys places. When she thrashed up the inn in Middleport, Lazlo and Charlemagne helped her out of the mess. She later tried to make up for it by becoming Lazlo's bodyguard alongside Millay and Gretchen. Even when aboard the ship, she damaged it on several occasions unintentionally. She looks up to Karl and strives to be like him. Lo Hak finds her cute.

He attacked Lazlo on the Hermitage Island along with his pack of demon wolves. After he lost, he realized Lazlo is very strong and decided to follow him. Although he cannot speak many words, it appears he does know how to write. After the unification of the Island Nations Federation, he returns to the woods.
Gau uses claws as his weapon and is 42 years old. Note that he is not the same as the kobold Gau from Suikoden III.
[edit] Gretchen
Gretchen is a swordmistress whose ultimate wish was to join the Island Nations forces that were battling against the Kooluk forces. Before she had joined them, she believed herself to be the strongest swordsman alive. Later, she realized how wrong she was after meeting the people on Lazlo's ship. She felt indebted to Lazlo for fulfilling her desire to join his group and spent her days on the ship guarding his room, alongside Helga and Millay. After the war though, she went on to teach her skills with the sword in the Marines Academy in Razril. She is 26 years old.

It is speculated that Gary is an ancestor of Maximillian and Fred Maximillian due to his courage, funny moustache, the crest he wears on his shirt which later represents the Maximillian Knights, and the fact that they all share the Chii Star.
[edit] Millay
Millay is a talented swordswoman from Middleport. She left her hometown when she was pressured to marry Schtolteheim Reinbach III, the son of the local Lord. Ironically, it would be Schtolteheim Reinbach III and Lazlo En Kuldes who would save her from a group of men hired to take her back home for the wedding. Impressed by both men, Millay joined Lazlo's crew and aided him during the Kooluk Southern Expansion. After the war, she was among the group sent by Lino En Kuldes to assist Kyril during his quest into the Kooluk Empire in Suikoden Tactics.
[edit] Viki
Viki is a somewhat clueless girl with the power to teleport herself and others. Once acquired, she can quickly transport Lazlo's party to previously visited locations. Like Jeane, she has also appeared in every Suikoden game to date.
[edit] Kooluk Empire
Helmut was once a captain of the Kooluk forces. He was put in charge of Razril after it was taken over by Kooluk, though he had been against invading Razril as he believed Kooluk had no reason to occupy it. He offered his life and services to Lazlo in exchange for the freedom of his men. He helped Lazlo fight against the Kooluk with only one regret - disappointing his father, Colton, a general of the Kooluk Empire. After his father was captured, Helmut requested that he not be immediately disposed of. After the war, he disappeared with Colton.
Colton is a general of the Kooluk Empire and can always be seen by Troy's side.
Troy is the commander of the Kooluk's 1st Fleet. He saves Lazlo from certain death after his exile. Much later, Lazlo defeats Troy in a duel after Graham Cray's defeat, and Troy declines an offer to be rescued, preferring to go down with his ship.
[edit] Brandeau
Brandeau is a pirate. He bears the Rune of Punishment for a time, after it devoured the pirate Steele. He is defeated by Lazlo in a duel, and consumed by the Rune.
[edit] Graham Cray

Unfortunately for him, his son was the next target of the Rune. For unclear reasons, he wants the Rune of Punishment back now, and helps orchestrate an invasion of the Island Nations to find it.
Graham is a former student of Elenor Silverberg's.
