[edit] Protagonists
[edit] Agent 9
Agent 9 is a crazed laser-pistol wielding space monkey from the Spyro the Dragon series of games. In Spyro: Year of the Dragon, he is captured by the Sorceress and put into a cage guarded by Moneybags, who released him to Spyro for "a small fee". Agent 9 then makes Moneybags "dance" by shooting him in his legs multiple times. After the Sorceress is defeated, Agent 9 appears on a bridge in the world as a talk-to character. He thanks Spyro for freeing him and invites him to his world. His laser gun, which he has nicknamed "Mr. Laser Blaster", is with him at all times, and usually in his hand.
[edit] Bentley
Bentley is a Yeti who was first introduced in Spyro: Year of the Dragon. He was captured by the Sorceress and given to Moneybags' for safekeeping (who claimed that it took 24 Rhynocs to subdue him). After Spyro freed him, Bentley thanked Spyro "with the humility of a wounded sparrow." He has a younger brother named Bartholomew, and speaks with a wide vocabulary in a kind and scholarly manner. He describes Moneybags as a "duplicitous larcenous ursine"
[edit] Bianca
Bianca is a young anthropomorphic rabbit in service to the the Sorceress. While her loyalty is with the Sorceress she wears a dark purple cloak with a hood but later in the game she discards this and wears more colorful revealing clothing with a cape.
On orders of the Sorceress, she leads the robbery of the newly-laid dragon eggs after the exhausting Year of the Dragon celebrations that leaves all the dragons asleep. Only just managing to escape in time, she brings back one of the eggs to her mistress, the Sorceress. As Spyro begins his quest, Bianca is hostile towards him, trying to deter him from continuing his journey. When Spyro pays no attention, she tries more forceful tactics, such as casting spells at him. Unfortunately for her, she can do nothing to scare Spyro off. That is until the evil Sorceress takes the reins and tells her to kill him. But not even the reptilian beast "Buzz" that Bianca creates is enough to stop Spyro. As the game progresses Bianca becomes more and more friendly to Spyro as she begins to realise the wickedness of the Sorceress. Soon, she becomes a valuable ally, and helps Spyro finally defeat the Sorceress.
[edit] Blink
Blink is an anthropomorphic young mole, and The Professor's nephew. He loves to be underground, citing "fresh-air-a-phobia" as his reason, along with being a mole. He is a friendly character who helps Spyro defeat Red the Dragon.
[edit] Dragon Elders
The Dragon Elders serve as the government of the Dragon Realms, and are also the primary meditating body. Spyro has often saved them all dozens of times and they alone are the only dragons who do not mock Spyro for his size. They include Astor, Cho Lei, Magnus, Ragnar, Red, Titan, and Tomas. All of them are anthropomorphic, and come in various colors. Their roles involve teaching Spyro new techniques.
[edit] Elora
Elora is a faun and one of Spyro's friends who he met in Avalar. She's friendly and wise. She appeared at the end of 'Year of the Dragon' but only for a few seconds.
[edit] Ember
Ember is a small pink dragon that appears in A Hero's Tail and Shadow Legacy. In the latest game, she meets an armadillo named Bandit and the two fall in love. In A Hero's Tail Ember is obviously in love with Spyro as she asks Spyro to smash the dark gem beside her into little tiny heart shaped pieces as well as it would look nice on an engagement ring.
[edit] Flame
Flame is a young, fiery orange dragon, appears in A Hero's Tail and Shadow Legacy much like Ember. His appearance in each is brief, and he neither activates minigames nor advances the plot.
[edit] Hunter
Hunter is a cheetah and Spryo's best friend next to Sparx. He was introduced in Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage and has grown a liking to Spyro and often joins him on his adventures to challenge him in different challenges and one day win one. He helps the player learn different abilities and occasionally challenges Spyro to various races. He is dim-witted and forgetful. In Year of the Dragon, he falls in love with the training sorcerous Bianca, much to Spyro's disappointment. He is a fast runner, trained archer and skilled pilot of different vehicles. He become a playable character in Spyro A Hero's Tail and he gets a weapon of bow and arrows.
[edit] Moneybags
Moneybags is a wealthy bear who sells Spyro various ablilties, as well as unlock bridges and passageways. Although Spyro often shows his disliking for the bear, Moneybags does have a soft spot for Spyro and secretly does like him a little, but not nearly as much as Spyro's gems. His prices for these services are usually absurdly high.In the second and third games, Moneybags loses the gems he had and Spyro gets them. In the second game, he lost them cause Hunter tackled him. In the third, Spyro chased him til he gave him an egg.
[edit] Sgt. Byrd
Sgt. James Byrd 90068 is is "the world's only flying penguin", reason being he was raised by hummingbirds who taught him how to get airborne. After joining the Air Corps, he proceeded to help out in the war against the Sorceress. Previously, he was captured by her when he was spotted letting off rockets outside her fireworks factory, but is soon freed by Spyro after the latter pays a fair share of gems to the malicious Moneybags. Byrd owns two BTAM (Bird To Air Missile) launchers, which he developed himself and with these mounted on his shoulders he causes havoc amongst his enemies. Clearly being a fine soldier with his English accent and military jargon, Sgt. Byrd will uncomplainingly head out on any mission to help Spyro, no matter how daring it is.
[edit] Sheila
Sheila the Kangaroo is the first of the animals captured by The Sorceress to be rescued by Spyro in Spyro: Year of the Dragon. She is a small, mustard-coloured kangaroo whose large feet are extremely powerful, allowing her to kick foes out of the way and jump to tremendous heights. She has an stereotypical Australian accent, a casually enthusiastic attitude and is always happy to help out her friends. She is a "rare mountain kangaroo" and lives in the Swiss Alps with her optimistic friends, the three billy goats gruff.
[edit] Sparx
Sparx is Spyro's constant companion. In the game, Sparx acts as a "living" health bar: his color indicates how many hit points Spyro has. (Yellow- full health, blue- 2 hit points, green-1 hit point. If Sparx is gone, Spyro has to take one more hit to lose a life). Sparx can regain his hit points if Spyro kills various neutral animals (sheep, frogs, etc.), known as fodder. Killing these animals releases butterflies which Sparx eats to regain his points. Sparx gets bonus levels in the third game by Zoe.
[edit] Spyro the Dragon
Spyro the Dragon is an eager, headstrong, purple dragon and the main protagonist of the series. Unlike other dragons, who are typically slow and strong, Spyro is fast and agile. Although he has proven himself many times against larger opponents, other creatures still mock his size. He is always up for an adventure, is somewhat of a treasure hunter, and many say he disliked Ripto the most of his enemies.
[edit] The Professor
The Professor is an anthropomorphic mole who first appears in Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage. He is intelligent, but he has a slight memory problem. Since he has eye problems, he wears glasses, which he often breaks. He builds all kinds of gadgets to help Spyro on his adventures, which are activated by having a certain number of collectibles, such as Light Gems.
[edit] Zoe
Zoe is a fairy who Spyro met in avalar who follows him to different worlds and "zaps" him saving your progress. She is often the person who gives you attack tutorial as well. Zoe says during Hero's Tail that Spyro 'loses one-million brain cells' when zapped. Thankfully, even if zapped innumerable times, it doesn't affect gameplay in any way.
[edit] Antagonists
The Spyro series has seen a wide array of antagonists, with each game generally centered around a single villain which Spyro sets out to defeat. As such, very few enemies or antagonists have appeared in more than one game in the series.
[edit] Cynder
A large, powerful black dragon, Cynder serves as the primary antagonist in The Legend of Spyro. Although born from the same brood of eggs as Spyro, and in truth the same size and age as Spyro, Cynder's egg was seized by the Dark Master's forces and she was raised by them; under the influence of the Dark Master's power, Cynder grew to adult size and strength quickly, and was then able to defeat and capture the Dragon Guardians, collecting their power in order to unseal the Dark Master from imprisonment. After her defeat, Cynder returned to her original size and strength, and was safely returned to the Dragon Temple.
[edit] Gnasty Gnorc
Gnasty Gnorc is the main villain in Spyro the Dragon, and came back for a fairly major role in Spyro: A Hero's Tail. He has a green body, armor and a mace with which he froze all the dragons, and battles Spyro. Between his two roles he changed his clothing, gained electrical powers and apparently began to lose his memory.
Gnasty Gnorc discovered a spell which allowed him to freeze all the dragons. He fired it after the Elder Lindar called him "ugly" in an interview. He tore open the Dragon Treasury in Dark Hollow and turned the gems into warriors. He then fled to his junkyard home, unaware that Spyro, the only dragon who was not frozen, had began rescuing his friends from Gnasty's spell. When Spyro reached Gnasty's World, the gnorc was rather pathetically defeated after two blasts of flame. In the beginning of Spyro Enter The Dragonfly, Gulp was found at the bottom of a crater begging for more work from Gnasty Gnorc.
[edit] Gnorcs
Gnorcs are a gnome-orc hybrid created by Gnasty Gnorc out of the Dragon Realms' treasure. Later, they returned in Spyro: A Hero's Tail, again under the control of Gnasty, as well as under Red, a fallen dragon elder. Again, they gave up gems, which were not finite this time. Gnorcs also make a cameo appearance in Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! as "Showmen" in the Dragon Shores bonus world and awarded Spyro tokens for completing amusement park style games. The tokens were then used to open a theatre in which the player could view cutscenes from the game.
[edit] Grendor
Grendor is the antagonist of Spyro: Season of Ice for the GBA. He was a Rhynoc who worked as a librarian of sorts for the Sorceress. In an attempt to cast a spell to become stronger and smarter, he wound up with two heads; the only way he could find to reverse it required wings from one hundred fairies, so he captured and froze fairies in ice for use in the spell. After his defeat at the hands of Spyro,,Zoe returned him to his normal form.
[edit] Red the Dragon
Red the Dragon is the main antagonist from A Hero's Tail. He was a former elder of the Dragon Realms. Having been banished from the realms by the other Elders, he returned to seek revenge and plunge the realms in a layer of darkness under his rule, bringing along with him Gnasty Gnorc (and correspondingly, Gnasty's Gnorc army), and Ineptune, an evil sea queen. In Shadow Legacy, it is discovered that he is under the control of the Sorcerer.
On the Volcanic Isle, when the Professor makes an attempt to infiltrate Red's lair, the Professor is captured by Red and forced to use his scientific knowledge to create a device capable of transforming the Gnorc soldiers into robots for Red's cause. When Spyro arrives at Red's lair in Red's Laboratory, Spyro charges at Red, knocking him back into the Professor's machine and subjecting him to the roboticization process. The now-robotic, and initially slightly confused, Red is then accidentally boosted in size and power by the Professor, leading into the final boss fight of the game. When Red's robotic form is defeated, the process is completely reversed, and Red is reduced to a more "manageable" size.
[edit] Ripto
Ripto is the title villain of Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage, a short but powerful orange reptilian sorcerer with a purple cape and a single horn growing from his forehead. Upon being accidentally transported to the realm of Avalar, he announces that he will be taking it over due to the fact that no dragons, which he despises, are native to the area. He initially has possession of an immensely powerful magical staff, but loses it early in the game when Gulp, one of his monstrous lackeys, mistakenly swallows it. He spends the remainder of the game relatively defenseless as a result, only regaining his true strength in the plot's eleventh-hour after abducting Avalar's greatest gateway crystal and creating a new magic staff for himself. He is perpetually grumpy and upset, a mood originating from his school days when he was mocked for his small stature.
A rarity for the Spyro games, Ripto is proclaimed dead two-thirds through Spyro 2 only to make a practically immediate reappearance, resulting in a very mild plot twist. Seizing control of the game's final world, Winter Tundra, he is finally defeated in a climactic duel held in a lava-flooded castle courtyard and accompanied by operatic music. Despite being vanquished at the end of the Spyro 2, however, he has appeared in several later Spyro games, including Enter the Dragonfly and many of the Gameboy Advance titles. In most of his appearances, he cooperates alongside his two dim-witted minions, Crush and Gulp, whom Spyro can defeat almost effortlessly despite their strong physical appearances. Spyro and Ripto often express hatred for each other but are accustomed to battling one another throughout the series, and Ripto may have even grown to have a very small fondness for Spyro over time, although he abhorred the dragon in Spyro 2.
[edit] The Sorcerer
The Sorcerer, the antagonist in Spyro: Shadow Legacy for the Nintendo DS, was a darkly-cloaked wizard who could also shapeshift into a dragon-like monster. seems to easily be the most sinister of the villains, warping the residents of the realms into their shadow counterparts causing the entire plot of Spyro: Shadow Legacy.
[edit] The Sorceress
'The Sorceres is the main villain in Spyro: Year of the Dragon. She is a blue dinosaur-like creature with a wand containing a dragon egg who is thousands of years old, and knows all the magical spells in the Spyro world. In the beginning of the game, her apprentice Bianca, steals 150 dragon eggs from the dragons on the other side of the world. The only dragon that can get through her rabbit tunnel is Spyro. Spyro has to battle the Sorceress for the dragon eggs. She relies on magic to keep her alive and when she banished the dragons from her side of the world 1,000 years ago, the magic started to fade. Now it's almost gone and she plans to use the dragon eggs to restore the fading magic to her realm. She would then kill all the dragons, and use their wings to cast a spell that will keep her alive forever.
Spyro confronted her in an arena fight, braving her magic spells until she was at last blown into the lava surrounding the floating stadium island. However, as Spyro was whisked away by a spell, the Sorceress, utilizing her amazing will, strength, and endurance, made her escape from the lava unknownst to anyone else. She went into exile deep within her treasury, with the only entrance being a magical portal locked with a powerful spell. Spyro at last broke the seal using powerful energy collected from gems and dragon eggs, cleared the treasury, came across the Sorceress and combatted against her via a flying saucer with an enhancement in firepower and durability from Bianca. The Sorceress was at last defeated, knocked into the acid below her and supposedly killed.
