List of Soul Train episodes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of episodes for the music show Soul Train. The dates shown are original air dates, but some dates are approximate because in the 1970s, most syndication markets did not get the episodes at the same time, so the dates shown are the first airings of the shows.

[edit] Season 1 (1971-1972)

This show had a variety of theme songs throughout its run. The very first one used was "Hot Potatoes" by King Curtis. The opening sequence features a cartoon train going down a track on a yellow background. This was seen in the Spike Lee movie Crooklyn, where the Carmichael kids watch the show on TV. Along with the theme songs, the Soul Train set itself went through major changes: The first set was train station-styled, complete with train tracks with various cities on the tracks itself, railroad crossing signs and the large title letters against the wall of the studio. This was used for the first two seasons of Soul Train.

After the 12th episode of this season, production was halted due to Don Cornelius having a major brain surgery, and the show was rerun for much of the spring of 1983. Starting with the 13th episode, the new theme is "Soul Train's a Comin'" by O'Bryan, which began the new episodes that Don produced upon his return to the show. The opening sequence is a orange sun and blue flashes go into the sun, making the sun a blue solar eclipse. Then the train chugs from behind it with a man saying "The Sooooooooul Train!". Then, it shows trains wheels moving and then shows the front of the train. Then, its chugging down the track with a neon city skyline background. [edit] Season 15 (1985-1986)

A minor animation change is utilized towards the end of this season starting with episode 23. Whereas the standard formula for the animation was a 20-30 second full animation piece ending with the train going into some sort of tunnel burst into the studio, you now have what can be described as a "trains"parent (yes train) animation in which after the 3 blue star balls eclipse into the sun the entire animation is now shown with the studio and dancers dancing as the new background as opposed to the neon black sky that we had previously been shown. although a great visual change, this method was abandoned at the end of the season and the traditional intro was reinstated.

[edit] Season 16 (1986-1987)

A new idea was sprung upon the Soul Train audience by episode 17 of this season. Previously at the top of the show, announcer Sid Mccoy would present the "guest stars" and then a digital box would float showing a 2-3 second "action" clip of said performer. The 2 changes occurring with Sid announcing the performers would still show the "Digital Box", but it would now appear at any given moment during an action shot as opposed to its long standing tradition of giving you a bird's eye/wide camera angled view of the entire studio and SOUL TRAIN logo. The second change would be you could now hear a 3-5 second sample of a song the said artist will perform on that episode once the digital box revealed the performer.

An era ends with this season. Don Cornelius hands over hosting duties to various celebrities over the next few years. Soul Train gets a brand new theme: "Soul Train '93 (Know You Like to Dance)" by Naughty by Nature and Everette Harp. The opening sequence features the train chugging down the tracks while clips from Soul Train's past play in the background (with different clips each season), and then the train starts dancing and jumps out, revealing the title. The theme song also focuses on Hip Hop Soul (New Jack Swing's successor. The Soul Train set changes yet again: This time the set is a nightclub like atmosphere with the improved titles and video walls. The logo also features Afrocentric colors and patterns, instead of the traditional logo.
