• Forst Zinna, East Germany - a Soviet tank gets stuck on a level crossing and is hit by express train. 6 die, 33 are injured.

• 4 June - Ufa train disaster - spark from electric train ignites gas leak. 575 killed

• 12 January - a collision between a bus and a train in Russia kills 21 people and badly injured another 6. All the victims were workers at a factory on their way home aboard the bus, which was almost unrecognisable after the crash. Police say the accident happened at an unpatrolled railway level crossing in heavy fog south of Moscow. The train's engine car derailed but no-one on the train was hurt.
