This article contains episode summaries for the American drama/adventure television series Prison Break. The first season premiered on 29 August 2005 and went on hiatus on 28 November 2005. The show then resumed on 20 March 2006.

Michael Scofield goes to Fox River State Penitentiary, where he tells his brother, Lincoln Burrows (who is about to be executed for a crime Michael believes he is innocent of), that he is going to break them both out of prison. Mafia boss John Abruzzi finds out Michael knows the whereabouts of the informant who put Abruzzi away. | |||||

Trouble is brewing in the prison, with a race riot imminent. Michael has trouble retrieving a screw from the bleachers, which are property of fellow inmate T-Bag, and PUGNAc from C-Note. Veronica receives a security tape showing Lincoln shooting Steadman, and believes he's guilty. | |||||

Michael tests Sucre's ability to keep a secret, and is pleased with his loyalty. However, Sucre is annoyed with the loss of his conjugals for a test, and rejects Michael's offer to break out. Michael gets a new cell mate, Haywire, who complicates proceedings by promising to report any break out attempts to Captain Bellick. He also starts to notice Michael's tattoos, and realises there is a pathway hidden inside them. Sucre loses his girlfriend to his cousin, and decides he wants back in on the escape plan. | |||||

Michael convinces Warden Pope to deny the transfer order, but Agents Kellerman and Hale blackmail Pope into changing his mind. There are too many people for the escape to work - one must leave. Maricruz is pregnant with Sucre's baby, but is going to marry Hector. Abruzzi threatens T-Bag, but T-Bag slashes Abruzzi's throat. Michael sends a pill to Lincoln that will induce food poisoning and send him to the infirmary. The team, locked in the break room, start breaking out at night. A corroded pipe beneath the infirmary was replaced that day, preventing the team from reaching Lincoln. Hale is shot by Kellerman before giving information to Veronica. | |||||

Michael uses a rat to fry the transformer of the electric chair. Tweener hears of his plan to do so, and informs Bellick, who has the transformer replaced. Veronica's appeal to the courts and Dr Trancredi's pleas to her father, the Governor, are unsuccessful. Veronica and Michael see Lincoln for final visitation. | |||||

Lincoln is saved at the last minute when someone anonymously hands evidence to the judge. Lincoln thinks he saw his father in the witness room. Lincoln is rescued from the car crash by his father, and is forced to give himself up to the police. Nika meets Dr Tancredi, steals her key and gives them to Michael.
