List of PlayStation 2 CD-ROM games

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of Sony PlayStation 2 games that use the CD-ROM format.

Well over 1000 unique PS2 games have been released in each of the console's 3 primary regions: USA/NorthAmerica, Japan/Asia, and Europe/Oceania. Games have been released on 3 distinct disc media: single layer DVD, dual layer DVD, and CD-ROM.

  • Roughly 80% of all PlayStation 2 games have been released as single layer DVD also known as DVD-5. These games are distinguishable by their silver bottoms and the tiny letters "PDSS" on the underside of the disc near the inner ring.
  • The early 2003 release of Xenosaga ushered in the first dual layer DVD or DVD-9 format game. Since then, at least 15 very large games have been released on this medium. On quick inspection, PS2 DVD-9 games are nearly indistinguishable from DVD-5 games except they tend to have a slightly GOLD reflective bottom instead of the traditional silver bottom of single layer games. DVD-9 games can be identified with certainty by the tiny letters "PDDL" found on the disc underside near the inner ring.
  • Over 150 older or smaller games have been released on CD-ROM and are easily distinguishable by a dark blue data side. Also the tiny letters "PTRM" (which may be backwards) are faintly visible on the underside of the disc near the center ring. Most CD-ROM games also include the 'Compact Disc' logo on the label side of disc. Many PS2 CD-ROM games were released early in the console's lifetime: 2000-2003.

Game disc format information is valuable since people with PS2 laser problems (very common on earlier models) can often read only regular DVDs and not CDs or dual layer DVDs (which require the laser to focus at a different wavelength and/or depth). Additionally, various third party and homebrew PS2 utilities are not compatible with dual layer discs. Games released in different regions may include a varying number of special features which may necessitate different disc formats. A prime example is European (PAL) game versions which may be much larger than the Japanese or US versions to store multiple languages.

  • Note some of the below games were released on DVD-ROM in other regions. Please mark known CD-ROM games in list with the game's region using 3 standard codes after the title: (US,EU,JP).
    • US refers to NTSC discs region coded primarily for the North American market (NTSC U/C).
    • EU refers to PAL discs region coded primarily for Europe and Oceania (PAL).
    • JP refers to NTSC discs region coded primarily for the Japanese and other Asian markets (NTSC J).
