List of Parliamentary constituencies in Avon
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Avon is no longer a county council area, nor is it a ceremonial county, but the constituency boundaries used up to the United Kingdom general election, 2005 were drawn up when it was both. The area is divided into 10 Parliamentary constituencies - 5 Borough constituencies and 5 County constituencies. The constituencies were first used at the 1983 general election, with their boundaries being revised for the 1997 election[1]

The Boundary Commission for England commenced a review of the area in 2000 and concluded that a satisfactory scheme could be produced in which no constituency spanned the current unitary authority boundaries. They allocated 4 seats to Bristol, 3 to South Gloucestershire and 2 each to Bath and North East Somerset and North Somerset - a net increase of 1. The more compact Bath constituency will be designated a Borough constituency, and constituency names will be changed to relate to the new local authority names.[2] [3] These changes are expected to be implemented at the United Kingdom general election, 2009/10.
