A total of 22 episodes were aired for the first season of One Tree Hill, 23 for the second season, 22 for the third season and 21 have been picked up for the fourth season. The total number of episodes that will be produced stands at 88. Season four currently airs on Wednesdays at 9/8c on The CW.

The season 4 premiere starts where the season 3 finale left off: Nathan jumping into the lake to save his uncle Cooper, and Haley screaming for help in the bridge, right after their wedding. Lucas and Karen, who Nathan had called in the previous episode to take Haley's purse (in which their plane tickets were) to them, arrive in their car, and Haley waves for them to stop. She tells them what has happened, and Lucas doesn't think twice before jumping into the lake to save a body that is floating face-down; we discover afterwards that it is Cooper, but a few seconds later, Lucas sees Nathan and Rachel laying on the shore of the lake. Brooke breaks up with Lucas. The identity of the person who wrote "murderer" on Dan's wall is still a mystery.

Once at the conference, he makes a moving speech about how his college decision has to be made "with his family's best interests at heart". Meanwhile, Brooke sleeps with a guy she barely knows. It is found out later that he is the new teacher at Tree Hill. Later on it is also revealed that the supposed Derek has been stalking Peyton and that he is not her real brother. He attacks Peyton and tells her he loves her, but luckily Lucas and Peyton's real brother Derek rescue her. Unfortunately, after Lucas and real Derek throw fake Derek out the window, he disappears.
