Many New South Wales government agencies are coming to adopt a form of the state's Coat of Arms as their insignia.

Government in New South Wales is delivered by a number of agencies, grouped under areas of portfolio responsibility. Each portfolio is led by a minister appointed from the Parliament of New South Wales. The bulk of the services in a portfolio area will be delivered by that portfolio's lead agency, typically a government department of the same name.

Agencies have varying levels of operational autonomy, and deliver one or more of frontline public services, administrative functions and law enforcement. Some are structured as for-profit corporations. The responsibilities and goals of certain agencies are set out in the 2006 New South Wales State Plan.

Since 2003, the Carr and Iemma administrations have significantly restructured many agencies. Portfolio areas including Commerce, the Environment, Planning, Resources and Transport were a particular focus.

On August 24, 2005 then state Liberal Leader John Brogden pledged to restructure the state government from what were then 21 departments, four ministries and 11 authorities into nine departments, cutting 29,000 staff in the process. This target has been revised downwards by his successor, Peter Debnam.
