This is a list of Nevada county name etymologies.
- Carson City, Nevada: Carson City is named for Christopher Houston (Kit) Carson, the famous frontier scout and soldier.
- Churchill County, Nevada: Churchill is named for Fort Churchill, named in turn for Sylvester Churchill, a general in the Mexican-American War.
- Clark County, Nevada: Clark is named for William Andrews Clark, a builder of a railroad through the county.
- Douglas County, Nevada: Douglas is named for Stephen Arnold Douglas, the U. S. statesman and presidential rival of Abraham Lincoln.
- Elko County, Nevada: Elko is named for the county seat of Elko, Nevada, named in turn for the herds of elk in the area.
- Esmeralda County, Nevada: Esmeralda is named for the Esmeralda Mining District, named in turn for possibly the character Esmeralda of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
