ISSUE: Managing progress Hexagram 35 describes a great time. This is a time for easy growth, overcoming obstacles, launching new products, hiring new people, corporate expansion, clear vision as represented by the sun rising over the Earth, and for the light shining upon hidden issues. LESSON: Hexagram 35 provides one of the I CHING’s greatest lessons: The I CHING recommends two elements needed to be successful: a) A capable Leader, and b) A loyal assistant. The role of the assistant here is crucial. The assistant should execute the leaders ideas not as his but as that of his boss’, not looking for personal advancement but rather for the advancement of the leader and the organization. The leader, on the other hand should look upon his assistant as his personal friend and trusted advisor, and reward him richly and publicly for all his efforts. This combination of a wise leader and an able as well as very loyal assistant creates a powerful team. And it is this team, which in turn brings about quick progress.

The Lines
Line Annotations
1 Darkening of the light. He lowers his wings. He finds difficulties and does not eat for three days. Stay on track, but beware of difficulties. The correct path is not always the easiest or most popular.
2 Hiding brightness. He is injured in the thigh. Even so, he gives aid to others and acts according to duty.
3 Darkening of the light during the hunt in the south. Explore disorder to conquer it. However do not deal too harshly with disorder which has been the standard for a long time. Change must be gradual.
4 He enters the left belly of darkness. He sees the true nature and understands that which is obtainable and that which must be avoided.
5 Brightness hiding. As a member of the royal family, Prince Chi was a virtual prisoner in the court of the evil emperor, Chou Hsin. The prince survived by concealing his disapproval of the emperor. Although he was a prisoner, he looked inward for peace and solice. The emperor was unable to harm him.
