Ian Bancroft was the Watcher entrusted on watching Darius in 1963. In 1968, on a mission in Vietnam, Bancroft recruited a new member for the Watchers, Joe Dawson. Dawson had seen the sergeant in charge of unit, Immortal Andrew Cord, being mortally shot. After having his own legs blown up, he was rescued by a resurrected Cord. Bancroft’s offer gave Dawson a new purpose in life and Bancroft became his mentor within the Watchers. In 1987, he also became the Coordinator of Western Europe. In spite of the rules and his Watcher vows, after years watching Darius, he came to admire and even care for the holy man. When another of his former pupils, James Horton, murdered the unarmed Darius in his church in 1993, Bancroft took it very deeply, suffering a breakdown. The Watchers decided to relieve him of the command of Western Europe and assign him to Hong Kong to watch May-Ling Shen, while having therapy with Dr. Lieu Chang. Bancroft must have sworn to himself that he would never become so emotionally attached again, since in 1995, he showed no grief when learning that May-Ling Shen had been killed by up-and-coming Immortal Michael Christian. In fact, after Darius' death, his attitude towards Immortals seemed detached and cold, criticizing Dawson after discovering his relationship with the Immortal he watched, Duncan MacLeod. At the same time, he became suspicious that Michael Christian's Watcher, Rita Luce, had a close connection with her 20 year assignment. In fact, Luce was so obsessed with Christian, that she had begun to take care of him and feed him information about the other Immortals whereabouts and when they would be easier targets. Concerned that Bancroft might interfere with her plot, she ran Bancroft over with her car, killing him.
