[edit] The Bride
Known by some as the Bleeding Bride, this lonely jilted bride is one of the ride's most well known characters. Seen always in the attic with a loud beating heart, the bride is considered one of the spookiest characters in the ride's history. The bride has been altered several times throughout the ride's history, now at Disneyland appearing as a digital projection effect. An interesting urban legend is that the bride's "ring" is imbedded in the ground outside the Magic Kingdom version of the ride down the exit pathway. In reality, this is from a crowd-control stantion that was cut down.
[edit] The Ghostly Bride (1969-2006)
Her first form had a shadowed face with only a pair of glowing eyes visible, but she became a blue-skinned woman with white hair and yellow eyes. The common story was that the bride was Gracey's wife, but was killed by Madame Leota on their wedding. A common story is that Master Gracey finds his wife in the attic with another man, who he believes she is having an affair with, so he strikes him down and then pushes his bride out of the attic window. The man that was just a wedding planner.
[edit] Constance the "Black Widow Bride" (2006-Present)
After her recent alteration for the 2006 changes, the bride character changed from a sad, alone bride into a murderous and greedy back-stabber who has married five men and beheaded them, before proceeding to take all of their riches for herself. She utters ghostly wedding vows and her bouquet becomes a deadly axe. She is voiced by Kat Cressida [1] and played physically by Julia Lee of Buffy the Vampire Slayer [2].
[edit] Elizabeth Henshaw (Movie)
In the film, the bride is named Elizabeth Henshaw and is murdered by the butler Ramsley using poison. Master Gracey hanged himself in despair and during the afterlife he waited for her to return. Thanks to the Evers family, she could and was reunited with her lover.
[edit] Melanie Ravenswood (Phantom Manor)
The bride is the main character of Phantom Manor in Disneyland Paris. Melanie was a young bride who was to marry an engineer and planned to leave town with him after the wedding, but her father, Henry, disliked the idea and vowed to stop the wedding at all costs. However, he and his wife died in 1860 thanks to an earthquake. On Melanie's wedding day, her groom was hanged by the Phantom so he didn't show up and she spent her life and the afterlife waiting for him, the spectre of the evil Phantom shadowing her presence.
[edit] Mr.Coats & Mr.Davis
Mr. Coats & Mr. Davis were two architects hired by Mr. Gracey to build the mansion. However, Mr. Coats wanted all the glory for himself, so he trapped Mr. Davis in a self-sealing casket, becoming the spirit trapped in the coffin in the attraction. Mr. Coats couldn't find his way out of the mansion. His ghost is using the same candelabra he used in life to light his way while he wanders the Endless Hallway, looking for a way out. The two characters appeared in the comics, and are named after two of the attraction's main creators: Claude Coats and Marc Davis.
[edit] Fifi
A ghost of a dog buried in the pet graveyard that desperately wants to be inside the mansion with his owner, the bride.
[edit] Horace Fusslebottom (The Groundskeeper)
The groundskeeper of Gracey Mansion. He is terrified of the mansion, but works there everynight with his dog so that he can dine on his wife's grave with her. The Groundskeeper character was to appear in the Haunted Mansion movie, being played by Don Knotts, but these scenes were cut before filming. A ghostly version of the groundskeeper still appears in the movie in the Graveyard scene.
[edit] Master Gracey
Master Gracey, often believed to be the Ghost Host himself, is a central character in many different stories of the Mansion. The name Master Gracey itself comes from a tombstone in the queue, his name coming from Yale Gracey, who designed many of the attraction's special effects. A common story is that he is George Gracey Jr. who married two wives, Lillian O'Malley (the tightwalker from the stretching portrait) and his cousin Emily Cavanaugh (the bride), but both were killed by a jealous Madame Leota. Leota planned to seal Gracey in her crystal ball, but he hanged himself instead.
[edit] The Movie
In the Haunted Mansion movie, Edward Gracey is played by Nathaniel Parker. He awaits for the day that his departed love, Elizabeth Henshaw (the bride), would return to his side and they could get married. He believed Sara Evers was his lover, but was mistaken. He ended going to Heaven with Elizabeth where they could live in peace.
[edit] In the Comics
According to the Mystery of the Mansion story, William Gracey was a sailor who lead a mutiny against his captain after discovering that he was smuggling guns aboard the ship. He killed the captain, keeping his head in a hatbox, and became known as the pirate Captain Blood.
[edit] Madame Leota
Madame Leota is a gypsy woman who is one of the ride's most famous characters. Her head is imprisoned within a crystal ball, and in her seance room, she summons spirits using magical incantations. Her face was taken from Leota Toombs, an Imagineer who worked in costume design, and voiced by Eleanor Audley, also known for voicing Lady Tremaine and Maleficent. A common story is that Leota was a gypsy from Louisiana who killed Gracey's wives. She tried to kill Gracey but sealed herself in her own crystal ball. And she and her daughter Little Leota murdered most people in the mansion In the film, Madame Leota is portrayed by Jennifer Tilly. However Madame Leota is good, kind and friendly in the game and movie. In the videogame she helps Zeke fight the evil spirits.
[edit] Zeke Holloway (video game)
In the video game of the Haunted Mansion, Zeke is called to help save the mansion from the evil Atticus Thorn. Zeke has a shy and dreamy personality. In the game he is given a magical lantern by Leota, to use to fight off the evil spirits. Zeke wanted to become an author someday.
[edit] Atticus Thorn (video game)
A heartless and evil phantom, who had lived for over centuries is the leader of a secret order, whose purpose is to wipe out good forces in the world. It is obvious to tell that maybe the mansion became haunted because of Thorn's conquest over it. Many of the good spirits of the Mansion like Madame Leota are rebelling against him, and it is up to Zeke to help stop him from taking over the afterlife. Zeke first encounters him in the Ballroom and fights him again at the games end, defeated when Madame Leota is placed in the Beacon of Souls, destroyed by the lantern's enhanced power.
[edit] The Evers Family
The Evers family are the main characters of the movie. Jim Evers (Eddie Murphy) is a workaholic real estate agent who is married to Sara (Marsha Thomason). Sara is believed by the ghosts at the Haunted Mansion to be Master Gracey's long lost lover Elizabeth and is summoned to the mansion, but her family come along as well. While Sara is guided around the mansion by Gracey, Jim and his children Michael and Megan (Marc John Jefferies and Aree Davis) join forces with Madame Leota, Emma and Ezra to free the ghosts of the curse. They eventually leave the mansion at the end of the film, reunited with new personalities.
