Pope Adrian VI, who reigned in 1522 – 1523, was born and raised in Utrecht, now part of the Netherlands, and spoke Dutch. However the Bishopric of Utrecht was part of the Holy Roman Empire, an empire that consisted of many ethnic groups, like the Dutch, but the most dominant were the Germans therefore many German historians regard him as a German pope as well.
