[edit] Platform codes

GM used a lettered system of automobile platform codes for three decades. These letters were used as the fourth position of the VIN. Though today's GM platforms use Greek characters, they are still encoded with Western characters in the fourth position. Position five encodes the specific model and trim level of the vehicle.

[edit] American engine codes

GM encodes the engine type in character 8 of the VIN. The following table outlines the various engines encoded there:

[edit] Engine codes for passenger cars

Something is wrong with this chart here are two examples; A 1990 Buick Lesabre and its 8th character is a C (partial Vin 1g4hr54C). It has a LN3 3800 engine. A 2005 Buick Lacross has an 8th vin character of 2 (partial vin 2g4wc532). It has a L26 3800 engine. Wikipedia's own link on the GM/Buick 3800 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_3800_engine) even notes that the LN3 was origianly denoted with a Vin code of 'C'

There is another mistake on the engine code M, this M code comes out on the 1995 - 1999 Cheverolet Monte Carlo and the engine is a 3.1 SFI engine. The engine code is not shown here. Different website show different engine codes for this car, best bet is to go to the dealership and ask.
