In the pilot, Chris' family moves out of the projects, but money is very tight. As his mom says, if they don't owe anybody money, it means they don't have any money. His dad works night shifts while his mom works during the day. Chris is sent to all-white junior high across town and gets into a fight with the school bully Joey Caruso.

When Chris' mother, Rochelle, hires the girl next door, Keisha, to tutor Drew at Math, Chris sees this as an ideal chance to impress her. But someone else may have the same intentions.

Chris is forced to serve 3 days detention after a rumor goes around that Chris was bullying Caruso. After suffering through a "vegetarian meal", Julius buys a big crate of sausage which will be the entire week's dinner. However, Tanya refuses to eat sausage, causing friction between her and Rochelle.

Chris makes friends with Fat Mike who protects him from thugs. Meanwhile, Julius is out of work and does the chores Rochelle usually does which makes Rochelle mad.

Chris is asked by his mother to accompany his siblings while they "trick or treat" on Halloween. When Drew is invited to a party by Keisha, Chris goes in his place dressed as Prince. Meanwhile, Julius buys inexpensive generic brands of candy causing a counterattack from Rochelle.

Julius and Rochelle plan a romantic evening out and hire a babysitter, Ivette to watch Chris, Drew and Tanya. However Chris turns out to be more of a babysitter when Ivette continues to come and go from the apartment. Meanwhile, the restaurant Julius and Rochelle are dining at is robbed and Rochelle knows who the robbers are.

While Julius and Rochelle shop for a television set, a drowsy Chris is forced to do the laundry at the local laundromat with his siblings on a Saturday morning.

When Julius gets food stamps, Rochelle feels ashamed to use them when she goes for the weekly shopping. Chris and Greg have a heated argument about their science project which is eventually short lived.

Tanya becomes a troublemaker at home and blames her brother, Chris when Rochelle and Julius scold her. Chris decides to avoid Tanya's instigating by going over to his friend Greg's house in Queens after school. While there, Chris finds out that Greg is not allowed to have friends over and is forced to hide in the closet when his father arrives home.

At Christmas time, Julius and Rochelle find it hard to break the news to Chris that they can't afford to buy him presents after the water heater breaks but will still be buying Drew and Tanya presents. Rochelle finds out who the recipients of the school's canned food drive will be.

As school picture day approaches, Chris wants to find the perfect outfit with his mother's help. Rochelle then begins a job as a cosmetics saleswoman to earn extra money. On picture day however, Chris' clothes are stolen which causes him to take his pictures in his underwear. Meanwhile Drew steals Tanya's shoe in revenge.

Chris can no longer tolerate the constant bullying, and in order to attend his neighborhood middle school, Chris attempts to be expelled from Corleone. Meanwhile, Julius finds a new job that pays more than his previous two jobs combined. Unfortunately, no one can stand the smell.

Chris gets tips on raising the most money for a field trip to Washington, D.C. in the school cookie-selling competition from neighborhood crooks, which gets him in trouble with the police.
