List of Bleach episodes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of Bleach episodes. The episodes are sorted into the specific arcs they cover. With the exception of the Bount arc, each arc is an adaptation of the original manga. The Bount arc was a filler arc intended to give time for the manga to move ahead of the anime. Most of the later English titles are translations from the Japanese titles. Those episodes with official English titles have the title shown above the translation of its Japanese equivalent. The English airdates given for episodes 1 to 26 are their premiere dates on YTV's Bionix, which premiered the episodes before Cartoon Network's Adult Swim.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Ikkaku tells Ichigo Rukia's location and also warns him that his captain, Kenpachi Zaraki will be looking for him. June 14, 2005 June 3, 2007
Rangiku Matsumoto visits Hinamori. She informs her that Aizen's killer cannot be found just yet, as Sereitei is in chaos. She also gives Hinamori a letter from Aizen. It was the last thing he wrote, and it was addressed to her. The letter holds the truth behind Aizen's assassination, but the truth seems to surprise Hinamori, who was so sure that Ichimaru killed Aizen.

Ichigo and the others try to run away from the incredible power they ran into, but Ichigo eventually hears Kenpachi's voice, asking him if he's the one. When he finally meets Kenpachi, he feels as if he's been impaled by a sword. The intense moment is lightened up by Yachiru, who is amazed by the drool Hanatarō secretes when he's passed out. Ichigo is shocked to find out that she is a lieutenant, and that she can be so relaxed in Kenpachi's presence.

37 "Motive of the Fist"
"Ken no riyū" (拳の理由)
June 21, 2005 June 10, 2007
Blasting his way through a wall, Chad emerges into an open court where he meets Tatsufusa Enjoji, the 3rd seat of the 8th division. Tatsufusa swings his sword rapidly in every direction, believing it to be an impenetrable defense, but Chad sends him flying into the air with a single punch. Soon after beating Tatsufusa, Shunsui Kyōraku makes a dramatic appearance with rose petals. His dramatic entrance quickly breaks down as his lieutenant, Nanao Ise, dumps the entire basket of flower petals on his head.

Despite the comedic intent of this show, Chad asks Shunsui to let him by as he doesn't want to hurt such a good person; but Shunsui cannot simply let Chad pass. Kyōraku still tries to stall Chad, but he is unable to change Chad's mind. Chad eventually attacks him using his energy blasts, but they have no effect on Shunsui. Eventually, Shunsui gets tired of simply waiting for Chad to change his mind and tells Chad to stop; using two fingers, he touches Chad's shoulder and sends him flying across the court. Shunsui is puzzled over Chad's determination, but when Chad explains why he is fighting, Shunsui realizes he has no choice and draws his swords.

In a flashback, Chad remembers when he first met Ichigo. Chad would never fight anyone because he had made a promise to his grandfather, but he took this promise too much to heart and never even defended himself in a fight. Ichigo had to save Chad several times from thugs that liked to pick on him. Because of that, Ichigo and Chad made a deal; that he would fight for Chad, and that Chad would fight for him. Chad would put everything he had on the line to beat Shunsui, because Ichigo was putting everything on the line to save Rukia.

Despite his promise, Chad is still far too outclassed and is defeated easily by Shunsui.

Breaking through a wall, Kenpachi effortlessly fights with Ichigo who is too scared of him to concentrate on the fight.

Ichigo also becomes distracted with worry as he feels Chad's life force fading away, but is relieved when he feels Chad still hanging on. Ichigo realizes that Chad, Orihime, Ishida, Ganju and Hanatarō are all helping him, and that if he fails, that the others will too. He has too many responsibilities to fail, realizing this, he is finally ready to face Kenpachi (who has been waiting for Ichigo).

Ichigo faces off against Kenpachi. Hearing his bells and even managing to cut Kenpachi across his chest. But after hearing that Kenpachi hasn't truly mastered his zanpakutō, Ichigo becomes overconfident and is stabbed through his chest. As Ichigo struggles to get back to his feet, time suddenly stands still as Zangetsu appears.

Time stops as Zangetsu approaches Ichigo and takes him into his subconscious world. Once there, Ichigo has to prove himself worthy of wielding Zangetsu again. He must do this by fighting with the hollow version of himself. Ichigo is forced to realize that zanpakutō are more than just tools, and that just by knowing his swords name doesn't make him any better or more powerful. Ichigo realizes this and leaves his inner world to fight Kenpachi, but this time, he intends to win.

Fighting together with his zanpakutō, Ichigo has become just as strong as Kenpachi. But after overpowering and connecting with more hits, Ichigo begins to think something is wrong with his opponent. Kenpachi has been taking a beating, but he simply says that he loves fighting that much. He decides to remove his eyepatch, releasing all the power that it had been suppressing.

Gathering power for a final attack, both of their spiritual aura's begin to manifest. Kenpachi's into a skull, Ichigo's into a hollow mask. Both charging at each other, the clash is brutal, leveling the entire area. But despite his best efforts, Ichigo collapses with Kenpachi standing over him.

After their final clash, Ichigo falls down, thinking he's been defeated. But afterwards, blood spurts from Kenpachi's body and his sword snaps in two. Kenpachi believes that he was the one that lost as he collapses to the ground next to Ichigo. Yachiru thanks Ichigo for making "Ken-chan" happy, and then she shows off her ridiculous strength and carries Kenpachi away. Yoruichi also finds Ichigo, and transforms to carry him to safety. Ganju and Hanatarō are also making their way to Rukia's cell. Slowly but steadily they make their way past the guards and unlock Rukia's cell. But Ganju soon realizes upon seeing her face that it was Rukia that killed his brother, Kaien. Their confrontation is cut short however, by Byakuya Kuchiki. Despite being helpless, Hanatarō volunteers to fight Byakuya since Ganju doesn't want to save Rukia anymore, but Ganju can't let that happen and makes Hanatarō move back. He will fight Byakuya Kuchiki.

Saved by Yoruichi, Ichigo finally wakes up in a secret hideout. Yoruichi tells him that everyone is ok, and that despite being badly injured, Chad is fine. Yoruichi also shows Ichigo how a small cat was able to carry Ichigo, transforming into an attractive young woman. Her appearance is surprising to Ichigo, who insists that she put on some clothes. Afterwards, Yoruichi shows Ichigo a device that allowed her to fly. Ichigo then uses the object to try and save Ganju and Hanatarō as he realizes Byakuya Kuchiki is heading towards them.

Ganju tries his best against Byakuya, but is nowhere near strong enough to fight him. Byakuya uses his initial release, transforming his swords blade into numerous different pieces that look like sakura. Byakuya rips Ganju's entire body open. As he is about to use the attack again on Hanatarō, Jūshirō Ukitake holds Byakuya back. Ichigo also arrives and is reunited with Rukia. Despite Rukia's objections, Ichigo childishly tells her that her opinions are rejected and makes faces at her.

Picking a fight with Byakuya, Ichigo bests some of Byakuya's moves. But just as Byakuya is about to use his initial release again, Yoruichi arrives and prevents his blade from scattering.

As Renji recovers in his cell, he has a conversation with the spirit of his zanpakutō, Zabimaru. Zabimaru says that he is ready to face Ichigo's Zangetsu again, but Renji tells him that Ichigo is no longer his enemy.

Byakuya Kuchiki's initial release is interrupted by Yoruichi, who then knocks out Ichigo. Yoruichi then escapes from Byakuya, telling him that she will make Ichigo strong enough to beat him. Afterwards, Ukitake takes care of the loose ends at the scene, taking Ganju to the 4th Division to be healed, and sending Hanatarō on his way. Yoruichi takes Ichigo back to a secret underground chamber Urahara has built, telling him about the history of all those who have achieved the final release (bankai) and of the power that it grants, Yoruichi tells Ichigo that he will achieve it in 3 days.

Ishida and Inoue are also trying to make their way to the shrine of penitence to free Rukia, although they take a more stealthy route by stealing shinigami clothes. Despite the good idea, it doesn't fool the 12th Division captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi, who is closely spying on the two.

Ishida and Inoue both try to make progress to Rukia's cell at night, but they are caught by a drunken Aramaki. However, Aramaki is quickly knocked out by 12th Division members who appear calm and happy. But Ishida doesn't trust the new helping hand, and warns Inoue just in time before the new helpful shinigami explode.

Mayuri Kurotsuchi had used his own members as bombs, and doesn't think twice about exploding a survivor. Inoue had managed to put up a shield though, and saved Aramaki and Ishida. As Ishida begins to fight Mayuri, he tells Aramaki to take Inoue with him or else he'll shoot him as well.

Ishida and Mayuri begin fighting with Mayuri using his initial release, and to Ishida's surprise the quiet lieutenant, Nemu Kurotsuchi enters into the fight and holds Ishida down long enough for Mayuri to cut him with his sword. However, he cut through Nemu to do it. Mayuri's abusive behavior comes to a head as he proceeds to beat Nemu even after he realizes that he has paralyzed her as well as Ishida with his zanpakutō's ability. A driven Ishida becomes enraged after hearing about Mayuri's experiments on Quincy, as well as his own grandfather and despite being paralyzed, manages to stand and fight.

Even Ishida's hirenkyaku is not fast enough to dodge the attacks of the kusarigama. As the battle rages on, Ishida flashes back to his father and grandfather, remembering why he wanted to be a Quincy, and some final advice from his grandfather regarding the sanrei glove. He removes the glove, going against the words of his grandfather, effectively bringing his powers to the point of burning out to try and defeat Mayuri and his final release. Mayuri is defeated, but manages to escape in a liquid state. Ishida is affected by the poison of Mayuri's final release, but is saved by Nemu, who gives him the antidote as thanks for not killing her father. Ishida continues on, severely weakened, until he is confronted by another shinigami captain.

Momo Hinamori remembers in a flashback her experiences at the shinigami academy. Visiting the immature Tōshirō Hitsugaya before he became a captain. She also remembers meeting Renji Abarai and Izuru Kira at the shinigami academy.

On a routine field trip to fight demi-hollows, the group is lead by Shūhei Hisagi but when actual hollows are found in the area, the group is quickly decimated. Renji, Hinamori, Kira, and Hisagi are quickly surrounded after a fight with the hollow that destroyed most of the group. As they are about to be killed, Captain Sōsuke Aizen and then-lieutenant Gin Ichimaru show up just in time to save them.

The flashback ends as Hinamori knocks her guard unconscious, she escapes from her cell and plans to confront the person who killed Aizen.

Hinamori feels conflicted about what was written in Aizen's letter, but she finally accepts it as the truth. Meanwhile, Rangiku is reflecting on her past with Gin Ichimaru. He had saved her from starvation when they were children, and now she doesn't want to believe that Gin is responsible for Aizen's death. However, Hitsugaya is firm with his suspicions and believes that Gin might have a hand in the escape of Hinamori, Renji and Kira from their cells.

Ichigo's training for the final release is going well as Yoruichi notes. Having made vast improvements despite still being pummelled by the spirit of Zangetsu. However, Yoruichi is growing tired and decides to end the day's training session. It is also revealed in their conversation afterwards that Kisuke Urahara was the former 12th Division captain.

Elsewhere, Tōshirō Hitsugaya confronts Gin and Kira. However, he is quickly interrupted by Hinamori, who reveals that in Aizen's letter he suspected Tōshirō and not Gin. Hinamori tries to get her revenge for Aizen, but she is too emotionally disturbed and Hitsugaya swats her into the ground. Hitsugaya realizes the letter must have been a forgery, and prepares to kill Gin.

Kira is frozen solid after Gin glances a blow off of the dragon. Seemingly catching Ichimaru off guard, Hitsugaya freezes Gin's arm and tells him to surrender. But Gin uses his initial release as well, shooting through his robes to stab either Hitsugaya or Hinamori. However Matsumoto arrives in the nick of time and stops the blade from killing Hinamori. Gin then leaves, telling Hitsugaya to worry about Hinamori and a half frozen Kira, instead of running after him. Meanwhile, Yoruichi is thinking over Ichigo's training. Noting that his fighting skills have improved, but that his spiritual energy hasn't gone up at all, which worries her as they are slowly running out of time. Starting the next day of training, they are interrupted by Renji who has also come to train in a secluded place. Renji also informs them that Rukia's execution has been sped up to the next morning. Yoruichi's concerns about Ichigo's spiritual growth are put to rest, as Ichigo shows her that he has simply been suppressing his strength.

Rukia daydreams about the past and her acceptance into the 13th division. As a beginning shinigami, Rukia was looked down upon by others who felt that she got in just because she was apart of the Kuchiki family. However, her emptiness was quickly broken when Rukia met Kaien Shiba. He was the first person she ever had a casual greeting with, and that was what she was seeking, to be treated just like everyone else. Rukia made many new friends in the 13th division, including Kaien's wife, Miyako.

However, the happy daydream quickly turns into a nightmare as a strange new hollow torments Soul Society, capturing the body of Miyako and eventually Kaien himself. Captain Ukitake realizes he has to do something before he loses more subordinates and tries to kill the hollow, that evades him.

The hollow turns to Rukia, who has no other choice than to stab the infected Kaien. Rukia kills the hollow, but also kills Kaien in the process. The guilt she feels from this act is the reason why she feels she is unworthy to be saved by Ichigo, and thus must die.

It's the morning of the execution and it seems that just about everyone in Sereitei is planning to do something to either support the execution or stop the execution.

Kenpachi Zaraki along with Inoue, Yachiru, Ikkaku, Yumichika and Aramaki are all heading to free Chad, Ishida and Ganju as well as make their way to the execution grounds. However, they are all characteristically lost after following Yachiru's directions.

However, they are quickly met by the captains Sajin Komamura and Kaname Tōsen as well as their lieutenants, Shūhei Hisagi and Tetsuzaemon Iba. Kenpachi quickly declares that he's going to face all four of them at once, but Ikkaku and Yumichika want to fight as well. Ikkaku winds up facing Tetsuzaemon, while Yumichika takes on Hisagi. Kenpachi then begins fighting with the two captains, who use their combined strengths to try and immediately destroy Kenpachi. Kenpachi laughs it off, not even impressed by their display of power.

Elsewhere, Renji is ready, he has achieved the final release. As he leaves, he asks Yoruichi if Ichigo will be ready in time. Despite her initial doubts, Yoruichi is confident in Ichigo.

The battle quickly erupts as Renji uses his final release, changing the blades of his sword into a massive skeletal structure with a vicious snake's head. Renji wields his final release much like his initial release, only on a much larger scale, attacking Byakuya relentlessly. Just as Byakuya thinks he has defeated Renji's final release, Renji reveals that he simply diconnected the blades before they could be damaged. However, Byakuya soon uses his own final release, creating two rows of massive swords that scatter like his initial release, by which Renji is ripped apart. Despite being significantly weakened and near death, Renji tells Byakuya that his soul won't allow him to give up. But just as when Ichigo failed to cut Kenpachi, Renji's sword breaks when it touches Byakuya's haori. Byakuya congratulates him for trying and leaves his prized scarf with Renji's body.

The one person that Rukia cannot stand is Ichimaru, but it is this person that tells her about Renji's fight with Byakuya. Ichimaru quickly shatters her resolve by offering to help Rukia but then decides not to and smiles as he walks away.

Elsewhere, Kenpachi is manhandling Komamura and Tōsen, kicking Tōsen into a wall and throwing Komamura to the ground. Kenpachi is quickly becoming bored with the two captains and tells them to at least fight with their final releases. Despite not wanting to, Tōsen uses his final release to rob Kenpachi of all of his senses except touch. But even with a clear advantage, he is unable to defeat Kenpachi who is rapidly starting to grasp the idea of fighting inside the darkness. Eventually, Kenpachi simply grabs Tōsen's sword before he can cut him and slices Tōsen across the chest, dispatching his final release.

At the execution grounds, Rukia has arrived and the execution is starting.

The execution has started, and the attendance is poor. However, Rukia has accepted her fate and asks only that Ichigo and the others be sent back to the human world unharmed after her execution. The Commander General Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryūsai agrees to this and releases the execution halberd (sōkyoku), revealing it to be a massive phoenix. Meanwhile, Ukitake is unsealing an artifact that will help stop the execution and the group Yachiru was leading is almost at the execution grounds.

As the phoenix is about to destroy Rukia, Ichigo steps forward and stops the massive bird with his sword, surprising everyone who has been watching. As the phoenix begins to start its next attack, Ukitake finally arrives, and with the help of captain Kyōraku, they destroy the phoenix. Ichigo then destroys the execution stand and frees Rukia.

A beaten but slightly healed Renji finally arrives at the execution grounds. Ichigo throws Rukia at him and tells them to run and that he will cover for them. Swiftly defeating Chōjirō Sasakibe, Marechiyo Ōmaeda and Isane Kotetsu, Ichigo then faces Byakuya Kuchiki.

After Ichigo's display of power, battles are starting up all over Sereitei. Ichigo is squaring off against Byakuya, who claims he is going to defeat Ichigo and then kill Rukia in front of him. Yamamoto is also very angry with Ukitake and Shunsui's involvement in stopping the execution. Soifon is busy beating on anyone who helped stop the execution, until she is tackled by Yoruichi.

During the chaos, captain Retsu Unohana takes it upon herself to heal all of the injured at the sight of the execution. She also wants to visit the central room 46 as she suspects something is wrong.

Shunsui and Ukitake have stopped running, being far enough from anyone who could get caught up in a fight between them and the commander general. As Nanao Ise finally arrives out of breath, she is surprised to see Yamamoto patiently sitting on a rock. As Nanao prepares to help in the fight, she is completely overwhelmed by Yamamoto's power simply by looking him in the eye. Taking her away, Shunsui apologizes for bringing her along. As their fight starts, Shunsui and Ukitake quickly find themselves being overpowered by an angry Yamamoto. In an effort to avoid more fighting, they try to explain their actions to Yamamoto, but he doesn't want to hear it. Using his initial release, Yamamoto's blade lights on fire as his fiery aura engulfs the entire area and burns the clouds from the sky.

A bouncy and joyful Yumichika is searching for Kenpachi after having defeated Hisagi. To Kenpachi's amazement, he has no serious wounds or even a scratch on him; this is because Yumichika used the true form of his initial release and absorbed all of Hisagi's energy. Asking Kenpachi if he already defeated the other captains, Kenpachi tells Yumichika that Komamura ran away when he felt Yamamoto use his spiritual power.

Yamamoto has decided to turn Ukitake and Shunsui into ash for their crime, but tells them to release their zanpakutō so they can at least try to defend themselves. Together, they use their initial releases and reveal the unique forms of their zanpakutō. Charging head on at the commander general, their battlefield explodes with ash and dust as they clash with Yamamoto.

The battle between Yoruichi and Soifon is also heating up. After rapidly defeating Soifon's entire special forces unit, Yoruichi is faced with Soifon's initial release. Its power is that it can kill anyone after striking in the same place twice. Yoruichi is quickly being marked up by Soifon who wants to overpower her using a technique she still doesn't understand or even know the name of. Yoruichi then tells her that it is called shunkō, and reveals that she understands it far better than Soifon.

Soifon's past with Yoruichi is explored in this episode. She had been a member of a special forces division and was commanded by Yoruichi. She eventually became her personal guard, and spent every day with her. She made Yoruichi a promise that she would always be there to protect her, but Yoruichi then suddenly left with Kisuke Urahara, causing Soifon to feel betrayed and angry. In the final part of their battle, Yoruichi nullifies Soifon's attack. Still thinking about when Yoruichi left, Soifon breaks down in tears and asks why Yoruichi didn't take her along.

Elsewhere, Ikkaku and Tetsuzaemon are taking a sake break under the shade of some trees as they talk about the flashy battle between Yoruichi and Soifon, and the fight between Byakuya and Ichigo. After the sake runs out though, they play rock paper scissors to see who will get to have an advantage in the next match. They're treating their fights more as a sport, with the loser having to go buy sake as the winner gets to rest.

The fight between Byakuya and Ichigo is also developing, as Byakuya is realizing that Ichigo has become much stronger than before. Ichigo is dealing with Byakuya's initial release without a problem, and continues to tell Byakuya to use his final release so he can defeat it as well.

Ichigo realizes that his regular strength alone is not enough to fight Byakuya, and he too uses his final release, creating a smaller, completely black katana with the manji as the hilt. Ichigo goes on to best Byakuya's attempts to defeat him just by using the scattered blades, eventually stabbing Byakuya. Meanwhile, Tōshirō Hitsugaya makes for the Central 46 Chambers, deciding to investigate further with Rangiku Matsumoto.

After being stabbed by Ichigo, Byakuya uses the second form of his final release and creates an arena surrounded by hundreds of swords that Byakuya can call on at any time to defeat his opponent. Byakuya wants to defeat Ichigo using his own hands though, and only uses one sword to fight with him. As their fight continues, Ichigo believes that Byakuya is becoming quicker, but in reality Ichigo is just becoming weaker. After shooting a hole through Ichigo's shoulder, Byakuya tells him that he was just being ripped apart the longer he fought and that he finally reached his limit at absorbing punishment.

As all seems to be lost and the darkness closes in on him, Ichigo's inner hollow takes over his paralyzed body, generating a hollow mask. He catches Byakuya's sword in his hand and crushes it. Slashing wildly at Byakuya, the hollow is looking only to crush and destroy the shinigami. It becomes apparent that the hollow is overwhelming Byakuya. However, the real Ichigo quickly fights off the hollow and rips off the mask. Byakuya is completely surprised by this and begins to change his opinion of Ichigo.

Pulling together all their power, Byakuya and Ichigo are getting ready for a final attack. After their clash, Ichigo props himself with his sword so he doesn't collapse to the ground, while Byakuya staggers a few steps and stares at what is left of his sword. Byakuya tells Ichigo that he was conflicted over his duty of following the rules as a shinigami and his promise to take care of his wife's little sister, Rukia. Ichigo then tells him that he should have fought against the rules instead. Byakuya leaves, telling Ichigo he has won.

Elsewhere, Tōshirō and Rangiku have arrived at the Central 46 Chambers, breaking down the door, they quickly find that everyone in the room has been killed.

Hitsugaya arrives after the distraction by Kira and is completely shocked to see Aizen alive. However, after seeing Hinamori lying on the floor, Hitsugaya is enraged and uses his final release. Retsu Unohana and her lieutenant finally arrive, and witness Aizen quickly destroy Hitsugaya despite using his final release.

However, Renji was alerted that a hollow might be in the area and when he wakes Ichigo up, he feels that the strange presence is near Orihime. After leaving the museum, the group is confronted once more by the modified souls, who instruct them that one of their core group has been replaced by an imposter, and they must find out who that is before noon, or everyone in their entire school will be killed. Everyone is finding it very difficult to find the imposter while having to go through their normal school day. Part way though, Tatsuki disappears, calling for the utmost urgency to decide the fake. At the last minute, it is decided that the imposter was posing as Chad after he did not know Yoruichi, but it is too late for the modified souls kidnapped the school.

Ichigo and the others are ready for the final game against the modified souls. Approaching the massive gate, the group is sucked in as Ichigo fails to use his final release. After putting Chad into a giant hourglass, Ririn tells Ichigo and company that they have 5 minutes to defeat them and save Chad. Ichigo tries to use his final release again, but still cannot.

The hourglass breaks after this second attempt, and Chad is revealed to be completely unharmed. Ichigo then realizes that Urahara had created all of this to help the group come together and fight as one since Ichigo cannot simply rely on his final release all the time. Urahara also found it necessary to bring the group together since Ishida has lost his powers as a Quincy.

Meanwhile, Yoruichi and Soifon have been dealing with the Bount phenomenon. Finding the remains of a soul, they rush away to the site of another attack. Arriving before the soul can be eaten, Yoruichi transforms and stops a strange woman from sucking out a soul from its body.

At the Urahara shop, the bount are discussed more in depth. They are humans, but like the Quincy, they also have special powers. By absorbing human souls they can live forever, but these souls are usually already dead. When a bount eats a live soul, they gain extra power and leave the complete death of a soul without the chance of reincarnation.

Because the bount might attack Ichigo or his friends, Urahara has sent the modified souls with them for support as they all have spirit sensors. Kuroud with Inoue, Noba with Chad, and Ririn with Ichigo. It isn't soon after putting the modified souls in their respective dolls that they sense a bount.

Ichigo and Ririn go after the female bount Yoruichi had fought (later called Yoshino), while Chad and Inoue find themselves facing a man who looks like a vampire (Udagawa). While Udagawa leaves before Inoue or Chad can do anything, Ichigo quickly chases Yoshino into a corner and faces off against her fiery doll, Geite.

As Ichigo is about to be incinerated by the fire doll's final attack, Rukia returns and saves Ichigo. The fire doll doesn't give up though and continues its attacks, until it is captured by several snakes that have been made out of pipes. The other bount, Udagawa, has arrived and takes Yoshino away with the help of his snakelike doll. Everyone is glad that Rukia has returned, but the celebration is quick as concern about this new bount threat is growing. The group decides to continue the discussion at Ichigo's house.

Elsewhere, Yoshino seems to be confirmed as the weakest of the bount, as she has not yet eaten a living soul. However, even Udagawa is taking orders from someone else, a large man with red eyes and a scar on his chin, named Kariya.

The next day after school, the group is alarmed of a bount attack. Udagawa has been rampaging through a shipping facility, eating almost all of the souls in the area. Calling forth the doll from earlier, Udagawa uses his doll's true power, creating other snakes out of the things around him, such as broken concrete or rope. Udagawa quickly finds Ishida as the weakest in the group and goes after him. Meanwhile, Yoshino has escaped again, despite being watched by Kariya.

Udagawa eventually captures Ishida, but Yoshino takes Ishida away from him. As Ichigo and the others try to regroup and get Ishida back, Udagawa steps in their way, summoning wave after wave of snakes. Udagawa is finally beaten back by Ururu's bazooka, who has arrived with Renji, Jinta and Tessai.

In Soul Society, captain Shunsui Kyōraku has decided to take a visit to the 12th division in order to see their data on the bount. However, captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi refuses to do Shunsui the favor of letting him see the data. Shunsui gently insults Mayuri as he leaves, which prompts an angry Mayuri to erase the data on the bount. But when he finds that he is unable to bring the data up, Mayuri goes into an upset rant.

Ishida wakes up in a run down apartment room, surprised to see Yoshino calmly sitting next to him and his head wrapped in bandages. Yoshino can tell that Ishida has lost his power, and notes that she should have found another Quincy. Ishida quickly says that it is impossible, because he is the only Quincy left. Ichigo and company are called to a hospital as Ishida has checked in. When they arrive, Ishida tells the group what Yoshino told him about the bount. That Jin Kariya intends to use the extra power gained when eating a living soul and use it to open a gateway to the "world of the dead", and that Kariya will target Ishida as he needs a Quincy.

The fight with Hō and Ban is far from over, as it is raining outside of the hospital. Attacking the massive pillars of water, Ichigo, Renji and Rukia are quickly swallowed up by the water dolls as Chad and Inoue quickly try and get Ishida to safety. Giving up on drowning Ichigo and the others, the twins decide to go after Ishida. Attacking Chad and Inoue, the twins seem to be gaining the upper hand, even when Chad uses his armor. Chad eventually goes after the twins and splits them apart, but unexpectedly their dolls collapse revealing that they have to combine their powers using telepathy in order to control their dolls. Hō and Ban quickly gain an advantage again though, forcing Ichigo and the others to drink their dolls, allowing them to rip their bodies apart from the inside out. However, Nova uses his power to move Hō and Ban far enough away from each other and weaken their control of their dolls. Ganju and Hanatarō also arrive soon after, and Ganju uses his fireworks to destroy the water dolls. In the process Hō and Ban are turned to ash. Ichigo and company have destroyed the twin bount, but now Ishida has gone missing.

Yoshino tells Ishida that sometimes when you live too long you'll start thinking crazy thoughts, and that sometimes, Bount like Kariya will enact on those thoughts. Meanwhile, Kariya has called all the remaining bount together. Informing them that he has found a Quincy, and that their time has come for them to start a new shining era. In Soul Society, the entire 11th division is excited about the sudden presence of a former member, Maki Ichinose. However Kenpachi Zaraki wants nothing to do with it, and tells everyone to just leave him alone. Kenpachi's thoughts flashback to when Ichinose once stood up against him when Kenpachi killed the former 11th Division captain in battle and was recognized as the new captain. Afterwards, Ichinose requested to leave the 11th Division as he no longer had a reason for being there, the only captain he would ever take orders from was gone. He now serves Jin Kariya unquestionably, which Udagawa thinks is nothing but the easy way out.

Still deciding when to go and face Kariya, the tremendous bount named Koga Gowa breaks through the door to Yoshino's loft. Koga has been sent to bring Yoshino and Ishida to Kariya, but Yoshino will not let him without a fight. After bringing forth her fire doll, Koga also brings out his doll, Dalk, which consists of a collection of metallic objects that can take many forms. Capturing Ishida and Yoshino, Koga leaves before Ichigo and company can find them. However, the modified souls are able to track the Bounts' spiritual power if they change into their gigai form, which they hadn't thought of doing until then.

Meanwhile in Soul Society, Mayuri Kurotsuchi has called a meeting of all the captains and their vice captains. Someone has hacked into Mayuri's databank and stolen from it, also laying out a trap that if he tried to access it, the data would be locked. Mayuri is deeply upset over the matter and believes that there is a traitor amongst them. Afterwards, Kenpachi tells Yachiru that he is also suspicious of these events because after years of searching they've just recently found Maki Ichinose. But he is confused about how the two are related.

Using the modified soul's tracking abilities, Ichigo and the others find that the bount have taken Ishida to an exclusive large mansion, where Kariya is making his introduction. Kariya wants to borrow Ishida's powers when the time comes to make the world better for the bount and quincy. But Ishida is suspicious of Kariya, who believes that he simply wants to gain the power of the hollow world.

Ichigo's group is having a tough time navigating through the mansion thanks to Ugaki's strange eyeball-like dolls that keep getting in Ichigo's way. However, they have just been leading them to Kariya, who welcomes Ichigo. Kariya surprises Ichigo with his knowledge about him and Rukia, but Ichigo doesn't let it faze him and tells Kariya that he came to take Ishida back.

Ichigo tells Rukia and the others to go and find Ishida while he deals with the bount. Rukia and the modified souls managed their way upstairs and are heading towards Ishida's spiritual energy. But they are stopped by Maki Ichinose. The three modified souls are easily defeated by Ichinose, who saw through their abilities easily. Rukia tries using a kidō spell, but Ichinose blocks it with his zanpakutō. He is still deeply disturbed by the method Kenpachi Zaraki used to become the captain of the 11th division, as it effectively shattered his life. But he also says that Jin Kariya gave him a reason to live again, and now he wields his zanpakutō for him. However, upon feeling Ichigo's power rise, Ichinose becomes concerned for Kariya and runs to his aide.

Udagawa is up first to fight Ichigo. Using a technique called the snake net, Ichigo is eventually surrounded by snakes even after using flash steps (shunpo) and is launched into a wall. As Udagawa's doll poises to strike again, Ichigo uses his getsuga tenshō. Udagawa then uses this chance created by Ichigo to betray Kariya and take his seal, however, even without his seal, Kariya is still strong enough to block Udagawa's doll. Ichinose also shows up and defeats Udagawa easily after using his initial release. Afterwards, Ichinose starts to fight with Ichigo, as Ichigo had fought Kenpachi and defeated him.

This episode focuses mainly on Ichinose's history during flashbacks while he is fighting with Ichigo. They are equally matched at first, despite Ichigo's inability to see Ichinose's sword, but when Ichinose uses the full power of his initial release, Ichigo is rendered almost completely helpless. As Ichigo finally escapes Ichinose's illusions, Kariya steps forward to fight with Ichigo, as he has started to gain an interest in Ichigo's soul.

Ichinose remembers his past as a shinigami. That the captain that he had believed in and had worked so hard for was killed in battle by Kenpachi Zaraki. Ichinose wanted to cut Kenpachi down at that moment, but the entire division stopped him as the former captain was defeated in a formal bout. Trying to challenge Kenpachi to a formal bout of his own, Kenpachi says he'll consider it if Ichinose can even cut him. Ichinose fails to do this and deserts the 11th division for the human world. Following a hollow, Ichinose was worn down by the harsh arid environment of the human world. Unfortunately for him the hollow chose to attack when Ichinose was at his weakest. Ichinose was quickly defeated and just as he was about to be eaten by the hollow he was saved by Jin Kariya and Koga Gowa. It was then that Ichinose decided that he would follow Kariya for the rest of his life.

The flashback ends as Kariya and Ichigo begin fighting. Just as the final blow is about to be struck, Yoruichi, Jinta and Ururu arrive, barraging the mansion with Ururu's bazooka while Yoruichi carries Ichigo away. Rukia and the modified souls also save Ishida and Yoshino and teleport outside to the other group. Yoruichi tells them its time to leave and they make their escape.

In Soul Society, Mayuri Kurotsuchi has undone the lock on the Bount data and begins explaining the Bount and Quincy history to Captains Ukitake, Shunsui, and Hitsugaya. At some point in the past, the Bounts and Quincy had a battle. During this time, the Bount started eating living human souls to increase their power. They came to the conclusion that, whenever the Bount are about to do something of a large scale, they absorb living human souls, leading them to believe that the number of living human souls attacked will escalate now that the current Bount situation is coming to a head. Ichigo is depressed after his struggle against Kariya. Even though he isn't afraid of Kariya, he still doubts whether or not he can beat him. Ganju arrives on break from his job at the convenience store, to raise Ichigo's spirits and get him out of his depressed state. Along with Renji, Ganju takes Ichigo to Urahara's basement where he and Renji double team against Ichigo until Ganju gets called back to the store by Hanatarō. After Ganju leaves, Renji forces Ichigo to realize how unfocused he has become.

Despite giving it an effort, Ichigo is quickly caught by Dalk's metal net and is beaten nearly to death. Ichigo's eyes close as the hollow takes over his body and defeats the powerful doll with ease. But Ichigo quickly regains control and rips the hollow mask from his face, although he is almost completely spent and collapses afterwards.

Defeating Kuroud, Yoshi is about to destroy Inoue and Rukia, but her doll isn't being very cooperative and misses the attack. Not soon after, Mabashi interrupts her fight to test out his new power. Creating a small and lightning fast flowerlike doll named Ritz, Mabashi attacks Yoshi with his agile doll and forces her to leave. Inoue finds it difficult to fight against Rukia, as she had traveled to Soul Society to save her before, she can't simply kill Rukia now. This is what Mabashi was counting on though, as he has no intention of letting go of Rukia until she is dead. Shūhei Hisagi also enters the fight and is prepared to kill Rukia so he can then destroy Mabashi, but Orihime finds a way to separate the doll from Rukia's soul before Hisagi kills her. Afterwards, Hisagi defeats Mabashi's doll, and is about to kill Mabashi before he is saved by Ichinose. However they are quickly faced with Sawatari's powerful doll, Baura, which takes the form of a gigantic rocklike fish that can swallow people whole. The doll also navigates through solid objects much like how a real fish swims in water, however it cannot come out unless it is very spacious. Baura eventually swallows Ururu when Chad is caught off guard. Planning a way to get Ururu back, Rangiku uses herself as the bait so Chad will have enough time to catch the tremendous fish when it come out of ground. Chad then throws Baura into Noba, who absorbs the monster in hopes of getting Ururu to pop out. But Sawatari is too strong for Noba, who collapses after Sawatari escapes from inside him.

Linking with Noba's spirit energy and ability to sense the bount, Rangiku searches for Sawatari using her kidō. As Sawatari descends from above, Chad punches his doll in the gut, forcing the tremendous fish to puke up Ururu from inside of its stomach. Meanwhile in Soul Society, Mayuri has found the hidden bount data. Instead of using it to help the other shinigami though, he seems to be schemeing a way to get his hands on one of the bount instead. Renji uses his final release to battle the monster, eventually causing it to go out of control. Kariya also betrays Ugaki who is quickly destroyed by his own doll causing a massive cave in. Ichigo escapes the debris and finds Kariya and the other bount. Opening a gateway to the "world of the dead" Ichigo must now take on the bount and hopefully stop them from connecting the human world with the hollow world. But Ichigo is too weak to take on the now extraordinarily powerful Kariya and is being manhandled by him. Kariya was looking forward to fighting Ichigo's final release, but he decides to just kill Ichigo as he can no longer move. Now able to fight evenly with Kariya, Ichigo even marks Kariya on his cheek, but the attack was meant to decapitate him. Their fight is then broken up by Ishida who has regained his Quincy powers. Ishida then fires an arrow into the gateway created by the bount. However, the arrow is not meant to destroy the gate, but complete it so that the bount can travel to Soul Society. General Yamamoto calls a meeting of all the captains, informing them that the Bounts have arrived in Rukongai and that Hitsugaya has been put in charge of capturing the intruders. However, the last standing order he gives is to kill anyone who seems to be an intruder without hesitation.

Arriving in Rukongai, Jin Kariya and Koga Gowa are quickly found by Ōmaeda and Tetsuzaemon Iba and their troops. However, Koga easily dispatches the shinigami with his doll and flattens Ōmaeda as he cowers in fear from Dalk. Tetsuzaemon doesn't want to fight someone who isn't armed with a sword, but attacks Koga anyway. However, Koga catches Tetsuzaemon's zanpakutō with one hand. Jin Kariya then flings Tetsuzaemon through a wall and into a nearby house.

Ichigo and the others also make it into Soul Society. Instead of going straight to Sereitei, Yoruichi decides to ask Kūkaku if they can stay at her house while they search for the Bounts and collect data on a person called Rantao - the one responsible for creating the Bounts. Kūkaku agrees after beating up Ichigo and Ganju, but she is still curious and asks Yoruichi to tell her everything. Yoruichi then explains that Ichinose used his zanpakutō's abilities to sneak back into Sereitei, and manipulated the information on Mayuri's computer to perk his interest in with the Bounts. Mayuri fell for it and helped Ishida replace his powers, which led to the Bounts gaining entry into Soul Society.

Rantao reveals that Yoshino's soul was a copy of hers, and that the Bounts were the byproducts of an experiment in which the research team she led tried to create immortal souls. She explains that they couldn't use normal souls for the experiment, and used their own souls as templates for the creation of new souls for the experiment. The Bounts' dolls work the same way as a shinigami's zanpakutō. It is revealed that Ichinose is the one who erased the Bount data; he waits in the forest to fight Hitsugaya, Ichigo, Renji, and Matsumoto while Kariya prepares to attack Seireitei.

Hitsugaya and Ichinose pick up where they left off, with Ichinose using his initial release. With everyone confused, Ichinose is about to slice Chad, when Kenpachi Zaraki blocks it and starts his battle with Ichinose.

Telling everyone to leave, Zaraki and Ichinose battle. Zaraki blocks every attack Ichinose makes. Ichinose uses his initial release, and eventually cuts Zaraki on the shoulder. Getting desperate, he uses his zanpakutō's final release ability to trap Zaraki within a bright sphere. Zaraki easily escapes by removing his eyepatch, releasing his full spiritual energy.

Telling him to give up, Zaraki walks away as Ichinose is left with a huge wound across his chest. Ichinose refuses, and the two face off as auras surround both of them. Zaraki notices that Ichinose is giving it all, but slices him through the chest, apparently killing him.

Jin Kariya and his group of Bounts pick up where they left off as they successfully open the Seireitei gate. Just as they enter, Jin Kariya tells the group of ruffians he doesn't need them anymore, and quickly disposes of them as they try to attack him. Ichigo and the others eventually reach Seireitei with an injured Jidanbō's help.

Soifon and the Executive Militia separate to try and find the Bounts. Mabashi and his doll, Ritz, quickly dispose of most of them and control some of them. Sensing that Mabashi has done a good job, Sawatari walks away as Mayuri Kurotsuchi un-camouflages himself from the wall.

The Executive Militia reports to Soifon. One of the members is infested with Ritz and attacks Soifon with a single bitto

Soifon has been infected with a poison which quickly begins to incapacitate her, while the full effects of Rizu's control are seen when her militia, and other infected shinigami start attacking each other, while other groups try to stop Ichigo, Renji and Chad.

Komamura and Hisagi, after fending off some Rizu-controlled shinigami, ask Captain Unohana if she can cure the infected personnel. Unohana cannot do this without full knowledge of Mabashi's technique, but she is able to sedate them.

Soifon manages to reach a deserted area, where she runs into Mabashi. After a short fight during which Soifon does manage to hit Mabashi once with her Suzumebachi, placing the Homonka on his chest, she becomes severely weakened and begins to turn blind. Mabashi leaves her to die, and after thinking of Yoruichi, Soi Fon tries to find a way to regain strength.

Mabashi returns to watch Soifon die, she summons the last of her militia to attack him, but they are also controlled by Rizu and hold her down so Mabashi can infect her too to use her as a tool to fight the other captains. Just when Rizu is about to pierce through Soi Fon, she suddenly fights back with full strength. She reveals that Suzumebachi has the ability to counteract poisons, an important ability for the head of the special forces. With her regained strength, she pierces Mabashi again and kills him.

Yoshi and Sawatari notice Mabashi's spiritual energy disappearing, and both decide to cause more havoc. Sawatari is met by Mayuri Kurotsuchi, who vows to make him pay for his humiliation at the hands of the Bount, as the episode ends.

Mayuri proposes Sawatari to become one of his research subjects because of his renewed interest with the Bounts. Sawatari declines and starts attacking Mayuri and manages to rip his left arm off.

Mayuri heals himself and counterattacks, limiting Sawatari's doll Baura's movement. The plan works and he manages to pierce Sawatari using his zanpakutō, Ashisogi Jizō. Sawatari then fends him off and starts absorbing spirit particles to heal his injuries, but the zanpakutō's effects linger, as he can no longer use his right arm.

Sawatari escapes into another dimension and plans his next moves. He tries luring Mayuri but is caught off-guard when Mayuri reveals that he knew this plan all along, and explains to him that he can track him even if he slips into another dimension. Sawatari then proceeds to attack Mayuri using the absorbed spiritual power of other shinigami in earlier battles. The attacks severely injures Mayuri and he is forced to summon his final release, Konjiki Ashisogi Jizo.

Baura is then ordered to swallow the final release's poison but the latter proves fatal and crushes both Sawatari and his doll in a counter-attack. Sawatari, defeated and ailing, pleads for his life and agrees to be Mayuri's research subject. The captain refuses, letting his final release's poison kill the Bount.

Meanwhile, Yoshi, another Bount, is challenged to a fight by Uryū Ishida.

Ishida and Yoshi begin their combat and Ishida quickly realizes that the power of the Quincy bracelet is variable. He eventually is able to concentrate and fire a powerful blast, which Yoshi blocks by fusing with her doll, Nieder, and using the giant fan to block the blow. Yoshi also exhibits another new power as she fuses with Nieder's sword half, and is able to use the "Eight Swords" attack on Ishida. Barely able to dodge, Ishida is eventually knocked to the ground.

Meanwhile, Kariya breaks into the Bureau of Technology and easily dispatches many shinigami, including Nemu. He declares that he is searching for a crest. Kariya is confronted by Chad and Ichigo, who activates his final release, starting the battle. As the fight commences, a hole is blown in the floor and Kariya sees the crest beneath. By fusing with the crest, which has stored energy which was used to create the Bounts, Kariya declares he has enough power to destroy Seiretei at any moment, but he will give the shinigami, "One day to cower in fear." He promptly disappears before Ichigo can attack him.

Meanwhile, Nieder comments on how it was a pity that Ishida was defeated so easily. As Yoshi turns to leave, Ishida fires a giant energy arrow as the episode ends.

Kariya shuns the only other Bount, Koga, who was beginning to doubt him and said that Kariya was out of his mind to destroy Seireitei. Kariya injures him, but lets him live. Somewhere else Koga is wandering around when he meets some shinigami and they force him to fight. Hitsugaya's division member runs to alert the captain and both Hitsugaya and Matsumoto run toward the incident.

Koga, whilst apparently not killing anyone, easily takes down several 10th division units before finally meeting and fighting captain Hitsugaya. Hitsugaya quickly overpowers Koga's doll, Dalk, freezing and shattering her. Koga then reveals an axe which he tells Hitsugaya is Dalk's core. Koga, now armed with Dalk's core, then proceeds to fight Hitsugaya. Soon, Koga's body appears to be unable to support the large amount of spirit power he's been absorbing throughout the fight. Koga manages to launch a final attack on Hitsugaya, and Hitsugaya slashes him in the stomach. Koga, dying, then briefly reveals his motives, alluding to "a future without war", before falling to the ground and getting buried in ice previously made by Hitsugaya.

Hitsugaya returns from his battle with Koga. Ichigo and his friends are currently using Hitsugaya's office as a temporary base. Hitsugaya tells his subordinants to search for Koga's body and give him a proper burial. Meanwhile, 8th division lieutenant Nanao Ise tells Commander General Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryūsai about the Bount crest. The next day, Rantao confronts Kariya with a kidō gun, which she effectively uses to Kariya's surprise. Soon after seeing the Bount crest emblazoned on Kariya's chest, Rantao has a flashback, revealing additional details about the Bount's past. Rantao initially hid the Bount away in a cave city, while returning to Soul Society to request protection for the Bount, however, Central Room 46 calls the Bount a failed experiment and orders them wiped out. The revelation is that the child that Rantao rescued in the shinigami purge of the Bount cave was none other than Jin Kariya. Ishida feels the spiritual power of Rantao and goes off to find her, knowing that Kariya is there too. The episode ends as Rantao is seen getting hit by one of Kariya's attacks.

The episode starts off as Jin Kariya remembers the events that led up to the purging of the bount many years ago. He remembers their escape from the cave and the attacks by the hollow. Kariya's transformation is shown as he was about to be killed by a hollow. Kariya then remarks on how he was eventually deserted by his fellow bount. After a horrible loss to the shinigami after attempting to utilize the Quincy to reenter Soul Society, Kariya explains how he rounded up the remaining bount in order to attack Soul Society. Just as Kariya is about to kill Rantao, Ishida steps in and attacks Kariya, showing his mastery of his battle artifact. Ishida then explains Yoshino's warning that pointless fighting would only destroy the bount. As Ishida's battle accessory weakens, Rantao steps in and uses Jōkaishō's power to render Kariya incapable of fighting. Though Rantao urges Ishida to shoot him, Ishida intentionally doesn't attack Kariya with his full power, afraid of hurting Rantao. Suddenly, Rantao's reiatsu goes out of control as a result of using the Bount power. Ishida uses a technique which he used in episode 14, which released excess reiatsu from Ichigo. However, this fully erodes the Quincy battle accessory and Ishida is left defenseless. As Kariya is about to kill Ishida and Rantao, Ichigo steps in and the episode ends. On a side note, the opening and ending credits for this episode up to episode 109 are changed to promote the movie Bleach: Memories of Nobody

Kariya is about to kill both Ishida and Rantao, but Ichigo steps in and blocks his attack. Ichigo shows off his black getsuga tenshō as he battles Kariya in bankai form. Rantao reveals that there are multiple Jōkaishō scattered throughout Soul Society. Suddenly, Maki Ichinose shows up, revealing that he had not been killed by Captain Zaraki Kenpachi after all. Ichinose attacks Ichigo, who is caught by surprise. The Gotei 13 and their respective squads have been told to re-seal all 10 of the Jōkaishō around Soul Society, in order to prevent Kariya from blowing them up simultaneously. Meanwhile, Ichinose and Ichigo fight, but then Ichinose turns his sword on Kariya, stating his true intentions for joining the Bount. Kariya kills Ichinose out of annoyance. He then reveals his doll, Messer, in the form of a wind sword. The episode ends as Rukia asks Renji to take her to the Sōkyoku hill where Ichigo and Kariya are fighting.

The battle between Ichigo and Kariya continues. Kariya reveals his doll, Messer's true form, which utilizes wind friction that generates static electricity which becomes lightning. Kariya declares that he plans to release all of the Jōkaishō by releasing one, which will obliterate everything in Soul Society. Rukia and Renji arrive on the battle scene. Rukia proceeds to go help Ichigo, but Renji pulls her back, telling her that it is Ichigo's fight. Suddenly, Ichigo's hollow persona reveals itself momentarily in the form of an eye color change, catching Kariya by surprise. He reveals that he can no longer absorb spirit particles because Rantao sealed his absorption skills. The scene shifts to the efforts of the other squads in sealing the scattered Jōkaishō. Kariya then attempts to explode a Jōkaishō, but Byakuya Kuchiki uses his bankai to stop his attempt. Yoruichi appears at Byakuya's side, revealing their intentions to prevent Kariya from attempting to explode further Jōkaishō. Before Kariya is about to finish off Ichigo, Ichinose Maki's zanpakuto saves him by absorbing the lightning. Inoue, Chad and Ishida arrive at the scene but Rukia tells them not to help Ichigo, reflecting on how Ichigo is split between the human and spiritual worlds in a similar way Kariya Jin is, and this similarity means Ichigo may be the only one who can defeat him. They launch final attacks at each other, after which Kariya expresses his sadness at not being able to see what happens to Ichigo, and then disintegrates. This leaves Ichigo in a sense of deep thought, wondering whether Kariya's intentions all along were to end his eternal life.

With the threat of Kariya now gone, the group relaxes. Rukia goes back to the Kuchiki house to continue her recovery, while Ichigo and Renji discuss Kariya's life. They all go on to reminisce about their own lives; Ichigo on the days before his life-changing encounter with Rukia; Renji on his promotion to 6th Division lieutenant; and Rukia on the day she was told she would be going to the real world.

Meanwhile, Koga Gowa wakes up in Rantao's home. He had survived his fight with Hitsugaya, and was found and taken back to Rantao by Yoruichi. Upon discovering he is the only remaining Bount, he apologizes for the Bounts' actions, in particular for Kariya. He remains with Rantao.

The group returns to the real world, while in Karakura Town, a figure (Shinji Hirako) stands upon a post just as Rukia did the night before her encounter.

During a routine hollow purification, Ichigo is confronted by Shinji, who shows that he can willingly produce a hollow mask just like Ichigo has done unconsciously on occasion. He asks Ichigo to join his group: the vizard. At the same time, Kon (inhabiting Ichigo's body) is attacked by Grand Fisher and Ishida is attacked by another imperfect arrancar he identifies as a Menos Grande. Ishida is rescued by his father, who reveals himself to be a Quincy, while Kon remains helpless against Grand Fisher.

Meanwhile, Kon is still running through town in an attempt to evade Grand Fisher. Despite receiving help from Ririn, Kuroud, and Noba, he is eventually caught. Just as he is about to be killed, Isshin Kurosaki steps in to save him, dressed in shinigami clothing. Both Ichigo and Shinji become aware of a new presence, though neither are able to identify it as Isshin. Curious, Ichigo decides to leave in order to check it out, but not before turning down Shinji's invitation. After a short conversation between Grand Fisher and Isshin, during which Isshin makes it clear that he's been aware of Kon, Ririn, Kuroud, and Noba as well as Ichigo's shinigami activities, Grand Fisher transforms into a larger version of himself and draws his zanpakutō whilst mocking Isshin. Isshin casually identifies him as an arrancar and dispatches him in a single attack.

With the death of Grand Fisher, Urahara appears to have a short chat with Isshin. The two talk about the plans of both Aizen and the Vizard, more aware of the former than the latter. Both are aware of the Vizards' interest in Ichigo. After they sense Ichigo approaching, they depart to avoid being seen. Things in Soul Society are also becoming tense, though what is causing it is unclear. At school, Shinji is still following Ichigo. When Ichigo confronts him, Shinji admits that he won't give up until Ichigo agrees to join the Vizard. The offer is equally out of concern for Ichigo as it is for the Vizard. Shinji explains that Ichigo's inner hollow will eventually overpower him, destroying everything he cares about. Later on, Shinji is confronted by Hiyori Sarugaki, a fellow Vizard, about his lack of progress. They are interrupted by Chad and Inoue, who want to know what the two want with Ichigo. Hiyori states that it is none of their business, and prepares to kill Chad and Inoue. Shinji grabs her and runs away to prevent any such thing from happening. At the Karakura hospital, Uryū formally asks Ryǔken for his own Quincy powers, swearing not to further affiliate with the shinigami.

Meanwhile, two arrancar (Yammy and Ulquiorra) arrive in Karakura Town, making a spectacular crater at their landing site. When everyone comes to see what happened, Yammy begins sucking the souls from everyone in the immediate area. Only Tatsuki Arisawa survives, and is left weakened as a result. Chad and Orihime arrive to save Tatsuki, but are easily repelled by Yammy, whose strength is great enough to bat Chad away in a single attack and reduce Tsubaki (Orihime's attack spirit) to pulp merely by blocking it. Before he can kill either of them, however, Ichigo arrives to save them.

Before he can kill anyone present, however, Urahara and Yoruichi arrive to take over the battle. Yammy is no match for them, and is rescued by Ulquiorra, who then retreats in Hueco Mundo. Back at Ichigo's school, a team of shinigami is dispatched in response to the ever increasing arrancar threat. The team consists of Renji Abarai, Tōshirō Hitsugaya, Rangiku Matsumoto, Ikkaku Madarame, Yumichika Ayasegawa and Rukia Kuchiki, all of whom are posing as new students at Ichigo's school.

Annoyed, Grimmjow takes a group of five arrancar with him to the human world to eliminate anyone with even a trace of spiritual power. Meanwhile, Tōshirō's team separates to find places to stay while in the human world. There is character development, especially in Orihime and Matsumoto as there is an unveiling of Orihime's character and feelings for Ichigo and Rukia. Matsumoto is shown as a matronly type character, embracing Orihime and explaining to her that this type of feeling is always present, and necessary.

Upon being told by Ichigo he should stay back and not fight, Chad becomes greatly discouraged since he is no longer any help to his friend. Rukia then steps in and tells Ichigo she will take care of D-Roy herself. Unveiling her zanpakutō, Rukia easily kills the arrancar. She and Ichigo are then found by Grimmjow. He tells Ikkaku to survive so he can kill the person that failed to kill him. When Kenpachi becomes the captain of the 11th division, Ikkaku and Yumichika join under him. Later, Ikkaku is shown teaching Renji how to fight. After their training is eventually finished, Renji asks to see Ikkaku's final release, but Ikkaku refuses. Ikkaku wishes to keep it a secret so he can continue fighting under Kenpachi's command. In the present, Ikkaku falls from the sky, his weapons shattered. Renji is granted a short reprieve by Ururu, whose insane strength allows her to beat Ilfort to a pulp almost effortlessly. Ilfort counters this by releasing his zanpakutō, impaling Ururu on his newly-grown bull horns. Elsewhere, Shawlong has also released his zanpakutō, and effortlessly dodges or blocks Hitsugaya's attacks. All this time, however, Matsumoto has been requesting that they be able to lift their power limits in order to deal with the powerful arrancar, and now they finally have permission.
