- ^ Senator Hugo Coveliers founded a new political party known as VLOTT after he was expelled from the VLD.
- ^ Francis Detraux is the chairman of the Force Nationale, a small far right political party formed by dissidents of the Front National. Prior to that, he was a member of the FN fraction, that fraction ceased to exist when he left to found the Force Nationale.
- ^ Luc Paque originally was a member of the CDH Fraction. On February 3, 2004 he informed the President of the Senate that he had left that fraction. Since then he has become a member of the MR, but he remains an independent member of the Senate because directly-elected Senators can only join fractions in accordance with the lists on which they were elected.
- ^ Berni Collas is the Community Senator for the German-speaking Community and a member of the Partei für Freiheit und Fortschritt, which is a constituent member of the Mouvement Réformateur, hence he belongs to the MR Fraction in the Senate.
- ^ In January, 2007, Jean-Marie Dedecker founded a new political party known as the List Dedecker (Dutch: Lijst Dedecker), after he was expelled from the VLD following the 2006 Belgian municipal elections.
- ^ Amina Derbaki Sbaï originally was a member of the MR Fraction. On January 15, 2004 she informed the President of the Senate that she had left that fraction. Since then she has become a member of the PS, but she remains an independent member of the Senate because Community Senators can only join the fraction for which they were appointed.
- ^ At the beginning of the legislature, Francis Detraux and Michel Delacroix together formed the FN Fraction in the Senate. On May 12, 2005 Francis Detraux informed the President of the Senate that the fraction had changed its name to "Force Nationale" (after the new party he founded). However, Michel Delacroix refused to be a part of a fraction under that name and continued to exercise his mandate under the name of "Front National". At that point, the FN Fraction ceased to exist and both Francis Detraux and Michel Delacroix became independent members of the Senate. Michel Delacroix is the sole remaining FN Senator.
