From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lisa Rae Weltman (born 2 April 1964 in San Rafael, California) is an American socialist politician and sociology instructor at Mott Community College in Michigan.
Weltman worked as a printer, a metal punch-press worker, a secretary, a longshoreman and a drapery maker for many years before she returned to school in the late 1990s to earn a college degree. She received an A.A. from Henry Ford Community College in 2000, a B.A. from the University of Michigan-Dearborn in 2002, and an M.A. in sociology from the University of Windsor in 2003.
A member of the Socialist Party USA and the Socialist Party of Michigan in 2003-2004, she campaigned for their Presidential nomination in 2003, losing to Walt Brown at the National Convention. In 2004 she ran for Congress in Michigan's 14th congressional district on the Green Party line, receiving 1% of the vote and losing to John Conyers. In 2005, Weltman was an unsuccessful candidate for the Detroit Board of Education, receiving 41% of the vote.
Currently a member of the Detroit Working People's Association, Weltman is considering an independent run for President in 2008. A Presidential Exploratory Committee has been created "to build a campaign support network that is large enough and serious enough to convince Lisa Weltman to declare her independent candidacy for President of the United States."
