LIRC

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

LIRC (Linux Infrared Remote Control) is an open source package that allows you to receive and send infrared signals with your Linux computer system. Specifically, it is a kernel module that must be compiled by hand in order for it to work with an existing Linux kernel. The lirc code has not been merged into the Linux kernel tree because of the poor quality of its code[citation needed].

There is a Microsoft Windows equivalent of LIRC called WinLIRC.

With LIRC and an IR receiver you can control your computer with almost any infrared remote control (e.g. a TV remote control). You may for instance control DVD playback or music with your remote control.
