The Lion Monument (Löwendenkmal) in Lucerne, Switzerland. This monument, carved by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen in 1819, commemorates the sacrifice of more than six hundred Swiss Guards ("Gardes suisse") who died defending the Tuileries Palace in Paris at the time of the overthrow of the French Monarchy on 10 August 1792 during the French Revolution. The Swiss Guards were the most senior of the thirteen regiments of Swiss mercenaries in the Royal Army and had served with distinction since the seventeenth century. The monument portrays a dying lion lying across broken symbols of the French monarchy.
