Lingdale

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lingdale is a village in the borough of Redcar and Cleveland and the ceremonial county of Cleveland, England. The village is relatively new in comparison with other places nearby such as Guisborough. Lingdale was only built in the 1870s as a mining village for the mine workers, since Lingdale was located next to a mine. The mine was also served by a railway, this was never a passenger line but it operated as a centre of trade for the Lingdale mines until it's closure in 1964. Not many of traces remain to be seen today. Although only a village exclusively for mine workers Lingdale slowly developed to be village for all come and live. After the closure of the mines, of which like the railway not a lot remains apart from the overgrown entrance to the mine, all the mine workers houses became vacant so the ordinary folk could live in them. However much of Lingdales mining past disappeared with the demolition of then very much ran-down miners houses. Today very modern 1980s council houses stand on the sites of the mine workers houses. However some of the mineworkers houses still stand although now somewhat modernised. However much of Lingdales older Victorian houses, not associated with mine workers still stand along with Lingdale United Reformed Church, a Victorian chapel-like building and with other churches.also this is the birthplace of allan (iceman ) hodgson the most famous person to ever leave lingdale.
