From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lingane is a planet in The Stars Like Dust by Isaac Asimov.

It is one of a group of small nations centred arouned the Horsehead Nebula, called the Nebular Kingdoms. When Tyrann made its ten-year conquest of the Nebular Kingdoms, it was unable to capture Lingane, due to the cleverness of the Linganians in defending their territory. Giving up, Tyrann gave Lingane the status of 'associated state', and left it alone for the most part.

Lingane orbits a star of spectral class G-2, 11 parsecs (35 light years) from Rhodia.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Fifty years after the end of Tyrann-Lingane military conflict, the Autarch of Lingane, Sander Jonti, was involved in an underground movement to destroy the overlordship of Tyrann. The Autarch was motivated only by the desire to preserve his authority of the Autarchy of Lingane, and let nothing stand in his way. Eventually, he was put in a situation where he felt it was in his best interest to reveal the location of a potential site for a 'Rebellion World'. The Autarch was killed by one of his men, charging him with treason.

This event allowed the Tyranni to appear independent from an assassination of the Autarch, while still tightening their grip on Lingane. Following the death of the Autarch, Tyrann took control of Lingane, shutting down the native courts and instuting a system whereby they controlled the succession of the Autarchs.
