Lindy's

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lindy's is a deli and restaurant in New York City, located in the middle of Times Square at 1626 Broadway. In addition to the one in Times Square, there are multiple restaurants throughout the city, including one in front of Madison Square Garden. The deli is owned by Riesse Industries and known for its cheesecake.

[edit] History

Lindy's was opened by Leo "Lindy" Lindermann (died 1957, Parkinson's disease) and his wife Clara on August 20, 1921. A second location was added at 1655 Broadway. Damon Runyon was a big fan and wrote the restaurant into his books as “Mindy’s.” “Guys and Dolls” was based on his writings and Lindy’s is immortalized in one of the songs. [1], [2]

On April 5, 1956, Abraham Telvi, a mobster and hit man, attacked journalist Victor Riesel with acid, blinding him as he left the restaurant.
