Lindsay Monroe is a fictional character from the TV series CSI: NY. She is portrayed by actress Anna Belknap.
Formerly from Bozeman, Montana, Lindsay is sought out by crime lab head Mac Taylor and comes to New York after former CSI Aiden Burn was dismissed ("Zoo York"). While, according to Stella Bonasera, her dedication and abilities in the lab first drew Mac's notice, she has since proven herself as a good CSI in the field and her interrogation abilities were crucial to the resolution of a case in "Dancing With The Fishes," one of her first episodes. In "Silent Night," she reveals that she is the lone survivor of a multiple homicide in which four of her friends were killed.
Initially, she spent most of her time in the field processing crime scenes, but in the first half of Season 3, she became more confined to the lab. In "The Lying Game," she takes a leave of absence and returns to Bozeman to testify in a case centered around the crime referenced in "Silent Night." Anna Belknap was pregnant during most of Season 3; Lindsay's reduced screen time is a direct result of this, and Lindsay's leave of absence coincided with Ms. Belknap's maternity leave.
Her fellow CSI Danny Messer calls her "Montana," which initially annoyed her, but Medical Examiner Sid Hammerback notes that Danny calls her that because he is harboring a crush on her. She has since grown used to the nickname, even signing it to a card she leaves for Danny before she departs for Bozeman ("The Lying Game"). She is also good friends with Stella, who has given her some advice about living and working in the big city. Lindsay is known for Midwestern manners, such as taking off her shoes before entering a suspect's house. She takes her work seriously, especially when cases involve victims from small towns.
In episode 3.02, "Not What It Looks Like," Lindsay volunteers to go undercover to negotiate a hostage rescue, to which Danny objects. Her ruse is unsuccessful, however, and she must be rescued by the team. During the rescue, Danny is concerned only with finding Lindsay, and when he does, he holds her protectively in his arms. In the next episode, "Love Run Cold," Lindsay stands Danny up on a dinner date, and later admits to him though she does like him very much, she is unwilling to be in a relationship with him. She does not tell him explicitly why, using only the "it's not you, it's me" excuse. Her reluctance to enter into a relationship with Danny is later revealed to have stemmed from the memories of the multiple homicide, for the name of the suspect arrested for the crime is Daniel Katums.
In "Sleight Out Of Hand," Lindsay is testifying for the prosecution against Katums (portrayed by Jason Dibler), when Danny enters the courtroom and seats himself in the back. This gives Lindsay the strength to give her eyewitness account of the events: a scene in flashback shows Lindsay, ten years younger, sitting with her friends at a cafe, chatting about their summer plans. She gets up to go to the restroom and as she is washing her hands, she hears gunshots. Lindsay cracks the bathroom door open just enough to see a blood-spattered Daniel Katums with a shotgun in hand. Once positive that Katums was gone, Lindsay leaves the restroom and finds her friends, plus the cafe waitress, all dead, lying in pools of blood. A tearful and traumatized Lindsay calls the police. Back to the present day, Lindsay positively identifies Katums as the shooter. Thanks to Lindsay's testimony, Daniel Katums is found guilty of first degree murder. Lindsay, very much relieved, receives a hug from Danny and is about to kiss him when the moment is rudely interrupted by reporters' flashbulbs. Lindsay and Danny leave the courtroom hand in hand, pushing past the clamoring reporters.
[edit] Family
- unnamed mother
- unnamed father
- Uncle Freddy
[edit] Trivia
- Lindsay is from the same hometown as Catherine Willows of the original CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
- Lindsay was bitten by a cobra that escaped from a victim's car at a crime scene (3.10, "Sweet 16"). This was another device used to cut back on Anna Belknap's screentime during her pregnancy.
- Inside on the right of the card that Lindsay left for Danny when she went back to Montana to testify, it says: "Danny, I'm not good at long goodbyes. Or short ones for that matter. But Montana calls and the cows are heading home. MOO! See You Soon, Montana"
