Lind (リンド Rindo) (rhyming with 'wind') is the fifth Goddess to appear in the popular anime/manga Oh My Goddess! by Kosuke Fujishima, although she is the fourth Goddess to appear in the television series (Peorth only appears in a cameo in the ending credits of the final episode, before making her debut in the second season). Lind is a Valkyrie, a member of the battle division of Heaven. Like the Goddesses Belldandy and Peorth, Lind carries a First Class Licence. However, unlike the other two, Lind's licence is classified as 'Special Duty, Unlimited,' which denotes her position as a Valkyrie.

[edit] History

Lind's visit to the mortal realm of Keiichi Morisato and his friends is her pursuit of the Angel Eater, a supernatural beast that feeds upon the Angels that Goddesses support. After sealing the area against any intrusion, she set about finding where the Angel Eater was hiding. However, she did not realise that the Angel Eater was within her own body as a parasite and that she had been used by the Daimakaichō Hild as part of a scheme to replace the Angels inside the goddesses with Devils. Ultimately, Hild's plans were foiled by Lind and the other Goddesses. In the process, Lind's entire viewpoint on herself was challenged.

In contrast, Lind's appearance in the television series was during the Lord of Terror story arc at the end of the series. She arrived on Earth after the Lord of Terror had infected Keiichi and was preparing to open the gate to the Demon Realm, allowing them to invade Earth. Lind was going to kill Keiichi, eliminating the Lord of Terror in the process. However, Belldandy fought against Lind and protected Keiichi. The Goddesses are able to defeat the Lord of Terror by transferring him over to a floppy disk and using a magnet to wipe the disk clean. The credits of the final episode shows Lind in heaven holding the disk in front of Peorth.

When Lind had first acquired an Angel, she discovered, to her dismay, that it only had one wing. Due to this 'deformity' she was teased by her fellow Goddesses and was known throughout Heaven - and, it appears from Hild's comments, Hell also - as 'One-Winged Lind.' However, she later found out that she had not just acquired one Angel, but two. The egg that she had ingested produced twins - but she could only call upon one of them, Spear Mint.

Frustrated by her 'weakness' and resulting inability to call forth her second Angel, Lind threw herself into Valkyrie training with incredible ferocity. Not once did she give up, refusing to give way even when it was obvious that things were against her. She was determined to become stronger, which she thought would enable her to call out her second Angel. This intense training gained Lind the reputation as a Goddess of extreme violence.

However, during the fight with the Angel Eater, Lind discovered that it was not strength that she lacked, but trust. She did not believe enough in herself, nor did she believe in her comrades. It was this realisation that allowed her to call out her second Angel, Cool Mint.

[edit] Personality

To date, Lind is the only Goddess who can support twin Angels. This marks her as somewhat unique in heaven as a Goddess of incredible inner strength. However, her vigorous training had buried her true personality beneath an almost impenetrable network of shields and walls. After the Angel Eater incident, she smiled for the first time in a long while, resulting in a small sliver of her true personality to shine through the walls of her long-running, seemingly indifferent, business-like demeanour. In the television series, she does not demonstrate this emotional introversion. Although she is still focused on her duty, she does show a higher degree of emotion.

[edit] Trivia

  • Due to the romanisation schemes for translating Japanese katakana and hiragana, there is argument in how the goddess's name should be pronounced. In spoken Japanese, the actual pronounced sound is 'ri' - thus bringing forth debate that the name should be Rind. However official sources[1][2], as well as personal sketches and design notes from Fujishima Kosuke clearly state that "Lind" is the canonical spelling. Given the inherent difficulty native Japanese ordinarily have in pronouncing "l" and substituting it with "r", as well as the actual existence of a Nordic mythological Rind, the confusion is not without merit.
