[edit] History

In December 1974, voters approved a $4,985,000 bond issue to develop a new freshman-sophomore building on the Frankfort site. Construction began in the summer of 1975, and the school opened in the fall of 1977 as Lincoln-Way High School East. In November 1992, voters agreed to double the size of the campus to accommodate growth. Facilities added included a 42 classroom academic wing, a field house and auditorium. The expansion was completed in March 1995.

In 1998, citizens of District #210 approved a $60 million dollar building bond referendum to split the existing freshmen-sophomore / junior senior configuration into two separate four year high schools and add to the existing two schools an academic wing with 50 classrooms and a swimming pool. The move became officially for the 2001-02 school year, as it officially became named Lincoln-Way East High School, as opposed to simply the east campus of Lincoln Way High School.

The initial transition period was difficult for some students due to their two year history with a student body composed of both East and Central students. During this period a student-led group, The Griffin Gentlemen Connection, emerged as a guiding force for school spirit at East. The efforts of this group help create a spirit of community among the newly dubbed "Griffins" and helped them become more comfortable with their new identity.

[edit] Academics

In 2005, Lincoln-Way East had an average composite ACT score of 22.1 and graduated 98.8% of its senior class. Lincoln-Way East High School students are well prepared for and score well on standardised tests. 90% of students go on to higher education

The staff is comprised of 204 teachers, of which 67% have an advanced degree.[1]

[edit] School Spirit

The first official school day of Lincoln-Way East High School history took place on August 24, 2001. After reporting to their respective homerooms, students were led by "the heartbeat of the Griffin (provided by the drumline)" to the fieldhouse where the mascot was introduced and Dr. Michael Gardner revealed his now-infamous phrase, "Go East, Go Griffins, Go Blue!" One inappropriate use of this phrase was uttered by Dr. Gardner on the loudspeaker, following a school-wide moment of silence on the anniversary of 9/11. The Administration and Faculty of Lincoln-Way East are known for their fervent promotion of school spirit. This has been met by various levels of support from the student body ranging from enthusiastic, apathetic, and sarcastic, to a unique combination of the three. Another infamous quote from Dr. Michael Gardner is the observation that "It's a Great day to be a Griffin!"[1]

[edit] Athletics

Lincoln-Way East has 27 athletic teams, of 14 boys and 13 girls teams, which play in the Southwest Suburban Conference Blue Division and Illinois High School Association. Lincoln-Way East's mascot is the Griffin. During the 2001-2002 School Year (first year as a four year highschool and with out a senior class) Lincoln-Way East Griffins Softball team won the state title. In 2005, the Griffins won the Class 8A State Championship in football. The Football Team is regailed for never missing the playoffs in all 6 years.
