[edit] Culture

The town is perhaps best known for its Winter festival called Fècos, often referred to (inaccurately) as a Carnival or fête. This takes place between January and Easter and is conducted in Occitan, the traditional language of the area (In Occitan the word Fècos is the name of a dance characteristic of the festival).

The cafe scene is dominant in Limoux where food and drink represent the dominant cultural pastime.

[edit] Sights

The heart of the town is the place de la Republique, a wide square with some fine stone arcading and a number of timber framed houses.

Other points of interest are the Musee Petiet, piano museum and the Catha-Rama.

Of serious concern is the growing number of homeless people living in Limoux - as a town of excellent wine making, a number of grape pickers who are foreign to the region are squatting in apartments near the town centre and are causing disruption to the tranquility that Limoux is known for.

Limoux's town centre offers a selection of fine restaurants and bars, shops, and a local market held on the Friday of every week. Throughout the year you can enjoy a number of local festivals and celebrations, the most famous being the clown festival, or Fecos, which runs from Feb. to apr. each year.
