Limnetic zone
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The limnetic zone is the well-lit, open surface waters farther from shore in a lake. It is between the littoral zone but before the profundal zone.
It is often defined as the area where the lake bottom is too deep to support rooted aquatic plants due to insufficient sunlight. This area is occupied by a variety of phytoplankton consisting of algae and cyanobacteria as well as zooplankton, small crustaceans, and fish. Most photosynthesis takes part in this part of the lake.
