In the Sahara desert, three nomadic travelers stumble upon a set of ruins. They wander inside, and unseal the cover on a tomb. This releases set of ancient demon spirits, which immediately float off towards America. Word of the spirits' release spreads to a city called Mariner Bay, to a secret operation known as Lightspeed.
The man in charge, Captain William Mitchell, responds to this news by unsealing a set of files. He sends his daughter Dana, a member of Lightspeed and an in-training Paramedic, to seek out each person listed in the color coded files. Green: Joel Rawlings, a stunt pilot currently doing air-shows under the title of "The Sky Cowboy." Blue: Chad Lee, a professional swimmer currently working at Sea World. Yellow: Kelsey Winslow, an extreme-sports player currently rock climbing in the mountains. And Red: Carter Grayson, a rookie firefighter.
They're brought by helicopter, and then submarine, to the Lightspeed Aquabase, located beneath the waters of Mariner Bay. There, Captain Mitchell briefs them on the situation. It seems that 5000 years ago, the area Mariner Bay was founded on was run by demons. A Warlock was able to capture them, and imprison their spirits inside a tomb. They've since been awaiting the day when the demons would return to reclaim their land.
Lightspeed has developed technology to combat the demons, by making the four (roughly) 18 year olds, each chosen for their special skills, to become Lightspeed Power Rangers. At first, the four have doubts, until Carter recalls recently seeing a strange spirit in a burning building. They reconsider, and are given Rescue Morphers. Dana discovers that she will be the fifth member, Pink, having been groomed by her father to be a Ranger for many years, in a pocket dimension located above the city known as the Skull Cavern, the demon spirits take up shop.
Diabolico, the tall, golden lead demon. Loki, the blue second-in-command. Vypra, the human-appearanced female. And Impus, a small red baby dragon. It's explained that they are preparing for the return of their ruler, Queen Bansheera, by destroying Mariner Bay and restoring the Queen's palace where it once stood. They send one of their lesser demons, named Ghouligan, to begin the assault.
He harasses citizens, along with a group of black-suited bat-winged foot soldiers called Batlings. The five Lightspeed Recruits are called in, heading into the city in their Rescue Rover. They face the Batlings, but are outnumbered by the strong creatures. Captain Mitchell tells them to use their Rescue Morphers, which they do. They Morph into Lightspeed Rangers, and use their added strength to save the citizens, and destroy Ghouligan with their Rescue Blasters.
They're cheered by the civilians, and are later commended by those at Lightspeed. Captain Mitchell reminds them that what they faced was only one monster, and tougher ones await. They merely salute him, happy to serve and protect.

Ryan finds the golden key in the Tomb of Forever, which uncovers the prophecy of what would happen when Queen Bansheera releases the demons from the Shadow World. Ryan radios the Lightspeed Aquabase, but his transmission is cut off when Queen Bansheera appears and captures Ryan. Carter decides to rescue Ryan from Skull Cavern on his Mobile Armored Vehicle.
In the pervious episode, Jinxer placed a card on the Lifeforce Megazord just before it returns to base. Jinxer activates it in this episode, which releases hundreds of Batlings into the Aquabase. The Rangers try to fight them off, but there are too many. Some of the Batlings take control of the Lifeforce Megazord and begin attacking the base itself.
Carter makes it to Skull Cavern and frees Ryan before Queen Bansheera finds out. Jinxer and the Batlings with him hijack the as-yet being repaired Omega Megazord and use it to place stones all over Mariner Bay. Carter and Ryan are ejected from Skull Cavern as water seeps into the Aquabase. Captain Mitchell, Ms. Fairweather, and the other Rangers find a water-filled shaft, leading to an escape submarine. They flee and fire two torpedoes to bring down the Lifeforce Megazord, which collapses the last standing structure of the base.
Meanwhile, Queen Bansheera brings Skull Cavern into view at Mariner Bay. The Rangers grab air cans to use when diving through the shaftway to the submarine. Once there, they make it into the submarine. However, Batlings prevent the escape. They launch torpedoes to flood the room and escape. They launched more at the Lifeforce Megazord as that and the Lightspeed Aquabase explodes behind them.
Carter and Ryan arrive to take out the Omega Megazord. Because their firepower isn't enough, they bail out and launch the Mobile Armored Vehicle at the Omega Megazord, which causes it to explode. However, they are too late; the final stone was placed, and the ceremony begins.
The Rangers reunite and storm Skull Cavern, fighting through Batlings to prevent Queen Bansheera from opening the tomb. Queen Bansheera opens the tomb and tells the demons in the Shadow World to arise. Carter charges toward Queen Bansheera, who blasts off his helmet as he kicks her into the tomb. Queen Bansheera grabs Carter to bring her in with her. Carter holds onto a ledge and urges the other Rangers to close the lid. The other Rangers refuse and try to pull him up. Just at that moment, Diabolico's ghost appears; because Diabolico was betrayed before, he blasts Queen Bansheera into the Shadow World (with Diabolico following her), where the demons pounce on her. Carter climbs out of the tomb and the Rangers close the lid. The Rangers make it out just as Skull Cavern crumbles.
The Rangers later meet up to give up their morphers to Captain Mitchell and continue with their ordinary lives. However, when a fire truck races by, the Rangers can't help but to take off to the rescue.
