I am new to Wikipedia, but not to the Net. I first subscribed to CompuServe in 1983. Since then, I've been active on Fidonet, later on Usenet, and more recently various web-based discussion fora that have become so popular.
I live and work in the greater Houston, Texas, USA area. I am a former Marine and Unix system adminstrator who is studying electrical engineering. My interests include science and mathematics. I use Linux for both fun and profit, and my computer is a Macbook Pro running Mac OS X, Windows XP, and Gentoo. My other computer is a Hewlett-Packard HP-48. For entertainment I enjoy reading science fiction and fantasy, motorcycling, camping, and cooking.
My username reflects the fact that I consider myself a traditional liberal. I consider myself to be more of a pragmatist and empiricist than a dogmatist or extremist. My libertarian-leaning centrism puts me somewhat outside the mainstream of the Republican, Democratic, and Libertarian parties.
I've become interested in contributing to Wikipedia, but am daunted by the depth and complexity of the culture. Wikipedia is quite the rabbit hole. Recent edit patrolling is addictive and hypnotic, and not unlike a game of whack a mole.
