[edit] History
Planning was begun in 1995 for the school under the planning name Southwest County Middle School[1] as the population of the surrounding area began to increase considerably. Students were bussed to Rocky Run Middle school, which is nearly six miles away. When construction was completed in 2002. the strain was removed from both Rocky Run and other surrounding schools such as Robinson Secondary School.
In 2005, Liberty Middle School's architectural design firm, Samaha Associates, P.C. entered Liberty's design into a national competition (the 2005 Exhibition of School Planning and Architecture, run by the Council for Education Facility Planners International (CEFPI)) where it noted as a "Project of Distinction." The budget for the design and construction of the 79-acre school site was approximately $26.25 million.[2]
[edit] Academics
The school requires four core classes (Math, Science, History, and English) and P.E. for each student. Also, students can choose three electives (one in seventh grade, two in eighth). However, some electives are only for a semester or quarter instead of a full year, in which case a student may take more electives.
[edit] Demographics
Of 1100+ students (2006-2007), Liberty Middle School demographics is 77% White, 3& Black, 12& Asian, 7% Hispanic
[edit] Teams
There are eight teams in the school:[3]
7th grade: Pride, Navigators, All Stars, Patriots
8th grade: Rockets, Eagles, Wizards, Comets
[edit] Gym Uniform
The gym uniform consists of a red t-Shirt with the face of the Statue of Liberty on the front. Under the face are the letters LMS, which stands for Liberty Middle School. The shorts are a dark blue, with the same symbol on the front left leg of the shorts. If a student forgets their uniform, they are issued an undersized, pea green "loaner" uniform. This is to very large dissatisfaction of the male students, who prefer shorts longer than their boxers.
[edit] Technology
Liberty has 383 computers, including 7 computer labs with a graphic arts lab, science computer lab, and Technology Tools computer lab. Liberty also has 11 Smart Boards.[4]
[edit] Miscellanea
- Normally, FCPS names its middle schools after famous people. (e.g. Robert Frost Middle School) Liberty was a special exception, being built just after the September 11th, 2001 attacks.[citation needed]
- Rachel Carson Middle School has the same design as Liberty.[citation needed]
- Liberty has a baseball and soccer fields, but the students are prohibited to use them outside of PE.[citation needed]
[edit] Feeder Schools
