Killzone: Liberation is the sequel to the PlayStation 2 video game Killzone. It was released for PlayStation Portable on October 31, 2006 (US), November 3rd, 2006 (Europe). It is not a port of the original, nor a lesser version of the much anticipated PS3 game, Killzone 3, but an entirely new chapter to add to the Killzone series. The game is a complete sequel to Killzone, not a side story or anything to that effect, hence, why this game is the real "Killzone 2". KZL being dubbed Killzone 2 was confirmed by some of the game's developers on the PlayStation Underground Message Boards.

[edit] Story

In Killzone: Liberation, two months after the events of Killzone, most of southern Vekta is still under Helghast control. The rules of war have been cast aside with the Helghast General, Armin Metrac, employing brutal measures in order to seize the initiative and strengthen his position further. Returning as Templar, players will be sent on a mission to undertake a covert operation to save hostages captured by Metrac, while ISA troops continue the fight for liberty.

[edit] Features

Featuring an intelligent third person camera system, Killzone: Liberation allows players a more tactical surveillance viewpoint to view their action and read the enemy’s behavior during gameplay. Set in an intense futuristic war reminiscent of the previous PS2 title, Killzone: Liberation features the unique graphical style to showcase pure grit and realism. During gameplay, players will have access to variety of weapons that are unique and innovative, inspired by modern military equipment.

[edit] Gameplay

The gameplay is drastically different from the first Killzone, in that it can be described as either a Third Person Shooter or Top-down shooter, rather than Killzone's First Person perspective. In Killzone: Liberation, the player must complete numerous types of objectives, such as assassination, sabotage, and infiltration. The viewpoint has been changed from a First-Person perspective to a "pseudo-isometric" viewpoint. It's essentially a top down shooter with a real time camera that changes according to the player's position and the appearance of enemies/objectives on the screen.

[edit] Weapons

M82-G Assault Rifle
The M82 assault rifle is the first weapon available in the game and resembles the M82-G found in the original console version. It's said to be a highly accurate weapon but rate of fire and ammo capacity is relatively low.

StA-52 Lar Assault Rilfe
This is similar to the M82-G assault rifle but with a holographic scope. Mainly carried by the Helghast, this weapon can also be used by ISA soldiers. This weapon is well suited for short and mid-range attacks.

IvP-18 Tropov Machine Pistol
This handgun features an additional burst fire mode. The weapon also carries a high capacity for ammo.

StA-52 Slar Sniper Rifle
This weapon is an adaption of the StA-52 assault rifle but with heightened precision and sniper scope; the extended barrel on the rifle increases bullet velocity. Rate of fire is extermely slow and ammo capacity is low.

M13 Semi-Automatic Shotgun (Lucky Strike) A powerful short range weapon. Can have 2 shells loaded at a time. This weapon causes massive damage at close range, which can in turn knock any human enemy down in a single blast.

[edit] Downloadable Content

The game was originally intended to have downloadable content from Day 1, but due to technical difficulties, the Downloads promised were un-delivered. They will be included in the upcoming Chapter 5 download, which will enhance gameplay in the Single Player mode and give access to new features such as new weapons in weapon select, new skins, new artwork, and more media.

[edit] Multiplayer

Killzone: Liberation has a robust multiplayer mode. Currently players can only play via Ad-Hoc, which supports six players. There are a variety of game modes, including Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and Assault. Guerrilla Games is currently developing an update which will enable Infrastructure, which was planned to be working at launch, but wasn't functioning due to server issues. The patch is expected to be released Q1 2007. In the multiplayer players can play as any of the characters in the game that they unlocked.

[edit] Ad-Hoc

Ad-Hoc was available from Day 1. Up to 6 players can participate in a variety of gamemodes, as detailed above.

[edit] Infrastructure

The EU and US beta tests are as of now over. The patch that enables Infrastructure gameplay is being released sometime in Early-to-mid April of this year. The patch itself only takes up a mere 8MB of memory stick space, easily fitting on a 32MB memory stick. The patch will be a free download and will be available for download on Killzone.com and from the Downloads menu accessible from the main menu.

[edit] Chapter 5

When first bought, Killzone: Liberation comes with 4 chapters, each of them with 4 levels. The game's story is complete with Chapter 4, Mission 4, but Chapter 5 will contain unknown stories and content. It has been stated that Chapter 5 will introduce new gameplay elements and will play a bit differently from the original game. It has been officially announced that Chapter 5 will indeed be a free download as well. A release date has not yet been revealed although when it is downloadable it will be 70mb in size.

[edit] Playable Demo

The game has a playable downloadable demo that can be downloaded from numerous websites. The demo includes 1 multiplayer map from the game, and 1 single player mission. The mission in this demo, is not in the final game. It also includes a Ad Hoc multiplayer mode that allows for competitive play with other PSP users who have the demo. The demo can be downloaded from the official Sony PSP site here. European PSP users can download the demo directly from Killzone.com .

Killzone Liberation also had a free demo giveaway through the PlayStation Underground. This demo contained the same elements as the downloadable demo, but the only difference is that it was on a UMD. This demo was sent via mail to random PlayStation Underground members who had their PSP's registered with Sony.

[edit] Reception

Liberation was received with favorable reviews.

[edit] Awards

  • Received IGN's award for Best PSP Offline Multiplayer Game of 2006 [1].
