Tavistock Subscription Library, founded in 1799 by a group of residents inthe Town. John Taylor of mining fame was one of the leading figures the library which was housed in one of the town shops for a while; later with the patronage of the Duke of Bedford a library building, the Propylaeum, was funded and built (1820). This building was, after only a short time, demolished and replaced by the Duke offering use of the ancient Court Gate building dating from the middle ages which is where the Library is still housed today. Supported by subscription, housing about 800 books some orignal, the Library goes from strength purchasing only local interest books
