[edit] Early life
Liam Dunne was born in the village of Oulart, County Wexford in 1969. He was educated locally at Oulart National School where his hurling promise first came to the fore. He first tasted success when he won two Rackard League titles with the school in 1977-78 and 1980-81. Dunne later went on to become one of the most popular players for Wexford during the 1990s.
[edit] Playing career
[edit] Club
Dunne played his club hurling with the famous Oulart-the Ballagh club. In his youth he won a Slaney Hurling title with the club and later had much more success at minor and under-21 levels. Dunne later won senior county championship titles in 1994, 1995 and 1997.
[edit] Minor & under-21
Dunne first played hurling for Wexford at under-14 level. He won his first provincial title with the Wexford team that captured the Leinster under-16 blitz title in 1983. Two years later in 1985 Dunne joined the Wexford minor panel. He subsequently won a Leinster minor title, however, he ended up on the losing side in the All-Ireland final. In 1986 Dunne’s display in the minor provincial final was so impressive that he was immediately called up for the Wexford under-21 panel. He subsequently went on to win his second All-lreland runners-up medal as a substitute on the team that lost to Galway. Dunne played on the under-21 team for four years before joining the senior panel in 1988.
[edit] Senior
In 1988 Dunne made his senior debut against Laois in the Leinster Championship. He secured a regular place on the team in 1989 and won an All-Star award for his performance in the 1990 championship. Success at senior level eluded him for much of the 1990s, however, he won a second All-Star award in 1993. Three years later in 1996 Dunne won his first Leinster title. He later played a key role at centre-back when he claimed his first, and only, All-Ireland medal following a win over Limerick in the final.
Dunne captured a second Leinster title in 1997, however, Wexford were later defeated by Tipperary in the All-Ireland semi-final. The following years proved difficult as Wexford and Dunne faced a resurgent Kilkenny in the Leinster championship. He retired from inter-county hurling following Wexford’s defeat by Cork in an All-Ireland semi-final replay in 2003.
