[edit] Playing career
[edit] Club
Donoghue plays his club hurling with Clarinbridge. He has enjoyed some success at underage level, and in 2001 he won his first senior county medal. It was the first time ever that Clarinbridge won the senior county championship. Later that year Donoghue won a Connacht club hurling title, however, his side were defeated by Birr in the All-Ireland club final.
[edit] Inter-county
In the early 1990s Donoghue played hurling with the Galway minor and under-21 teams, however, he had little success. While it was expected that he would be an automatic choice to join the senior team the goalkeeping position went to Morgan Darcy. Donoghue turned to soccer after this. He played with Kiltulla F.C. and helped the team reach the quarter-finals of the FAI Junior Cup. Over the course of the whole season Donoghue scored a remarkable forty goals. He later joined Galway United and, although he never played in the League of Ireland, he regularly lined out in the Connacht senior league.
In 2001 Donoghue joined the Galway senior hurling panel, however, after he let in four goals in the National Hurling League quarter-final against Tipperary he was dropped from the team and left the inter-county set up. In 2003 Donoghue returned to the Galway senior team as the first-choice goalkeeper. In 2004 he was appointed captain of the team and guided Galway to a National League title. In 2005 he steered his native-county to an All-Ireland final showdown with Cork, however, Galway lost the game by four points.
