From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lev Arzimowitch (*February 25 1909 in Moscow; †March 1, 1973 in Moscow) was a Soviet physicist.

Arzimowitsch worked on the field of nuclear fusion and plasma physics. He was known as "the father of the Tokamak",[citation needed] a special concept for a fusion reactor. In 1955 an international collaboration started constructing the first Tokamak, but by 1970 only the Soviets were actively researching the concept.[citation needed] Once Arzimowitsch was asked when the first thermonuclear reactor would start its work. His replied: "When the mankind's need it, maybe a short time before that."[citation needed]
