Leuzinger High School
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Leuzinger High School is a 9th through 12th grade public high school in Lawndale, California. It is in the Centinela Valley Union High School District.
The school is named after Adolph Leuzinger, who was on the board of trustees of the Inglewood Union High School District, which bought the land on where the campus is located today. The school was named after Mr. Leuzinger for his 25 years served on the board, even though he was strongly against it, citing that many had a hard time pronouncing the name.[citation needed]
Olympians was chosen as the mascot for the school because the first graduating class was the year that Los Angeles hosted the 1932 Summer Olympics. Mr. Leuzinger requested and received authorization for the use of the Olympic name and rings.
The school's gym and fields were used by many participants of the 1932 Olympics, which explains the shooting range and bowling alley that is under the main building. Also, on September 8, 1936, work began on building the girls gym as well as an Olympic size swimming pool, but during a recent remodel of the school the pool was destroyed due to safety concerns from damages sustained in earthquakes.
The Leuzinger High School Key Club, hosted by the Hawthorne Kiwanis Club has won several awards at both the district and international levels.
