From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Letov Kbely (Kbely is a location) is a Czech (and Czechoslovak) aircraft company.

Letov is the oldest aircraft manufacturer in Czechoslovakia - it was founded in 1918 by ministry of defense to repair trophy planes from WWI. In 1921 first military plane was designed and built. During 1920-30's some 50 types of planes were built. During WWII the factory served as repair shop for Luftwaffe. Since 1950's the plant built parts of Mig-15, Mig-19 and Mig-21. Since the beginning of 1960's the factory produced training plane L-29 Delfín (over 4000 planes has been built) and since the beginning of 1970's training plane L-39 Albatros (2500 planes).

After fall of socialism in Czechoslovakia (1989) the company had problems to compete on international markets and in 2000 it was bought by French Groupe Latecoere. It now produces parts for large passenger aircraft.
