[edit] The brother of a traitor
Aiolia was the younger brother of the Sagittarius Gold Saint, Aioros. 13 years ago, Aioros was framed by the Pope of Sanctuary for kidnapping Athena, reincarnated as a newborn child and running away from Sanctuary with his Gold Cloth. This did not settle well with Sanctuary and looked to his younger brother with deep distrust. Because of this, Aiolia lived much of his younger days in shame and bitterness, and was distrusted by some of his fellow Gold Saints. Disgusted by the stigma of being viewed as a "the brother of a traitor", Aiolia chose to isolate himself from the rest of the community of Saints. Eventually he came to disbelieve in his own brother, and deep inside his heart he started hating the person he deeply admired - his older brother Aioros. He vowed that he would train hard and become the strongest Gold Saint in Sanctuary to ensure that he was not seen as "the brother of a traitor" by the people of Sanctuary.
He came to know Seiya personally during the days when he was trained to become the Pegasus Saint, and Seiya considered Aiolia to be his mentor, close friend and a surrogate older brother. It is also rumoured that he was Marin's former teacher.
Aiolia is head-strong and impulsive, an opposite to the colder and reflexive attitude of Aries Mu. However, he is also admired by Marin and praised by his close friends as a kind and gentle person, who very compassionate, but chooses to hide this quality in fear of being seen weak by some.
[edit] Loyalty to Athena
One day, the Pope summoned Aiolia and the Scorpio Gold Saint, Milo, to his hall, and explained to them the current situation they have at hand. He is missing the Gold Cloth of Aries, Libra and Sagittarius, and orders Aiolia to go to Japan to find the Gold Cloth of Sagittarius, and kill Saori Kiddo and her renegade Bronze Saints who are currently in possession of this Cloth. As Aiolia leaves, the Pope comments that Aiolia would do this to prove his worth as a Gold Saint.
In Japan, Seiya is attacked by Ophiuchus Shina, who insists that she must kill Seiya for seeing her face. However, the two suddenly sense an extremely powerful presence nearby, and Shina, realising that it was Aiolia, quickly warns Seiya to leave. However, Aiolia lifts both of them outside with telekinesis, and knocks Shina out in one move. He then tells Seiya that he would spare him so long as Seiya tells him the location of the remaining Bronze Saints and the Gold Cloth. Seiya tells Aiolia that he would not betray his friends, and fights back. Aiolia easily dodges his Pegasus Meteor Punch, and tells him that his power is inferior compared to that of a Gold Saint. He then strikes Seiya with his Lightning Bolt attack, but Shina leaps in the way and blocks it for Seiya, and tells him that she actually loved him. Aiolia, guilty for accidentally injuring Shina, decides to take her back to Sanctuary to be healed, and tells Seiya that he would kill him next time.
Before he leaves, 3 Silver Saints, Musca Dio, Canis Major Sirius, and Heracles Algethi appear, and mock Aiolia for his cowardice, stating that they would finish of Seiya if he is afraid to do so. Seiya, unable to fend off the 3 Silver Saints, was quickly defeated. However, the Gold Cloth of Sagittarius awakens, and assembles itself over Seiya. Seiya, now wearing the Gold Cloth for the first time, managed to defeat all 3 Silver Saints. Seeing the Gold Cloth of his brother, Aiolia tries to defeat Seiya and take the Cloth from him, but as he fought Seiya, he suddenly sees a vision of his deceased brother over Seiya, telling him that Seiya is the true protector of Athena. Aiolia was shocked by this, and he was knocked down by Seiya's attack. Saori Kiddo arrives before the two could continue fighting, and explain to Aiolia that she is the true reincarnation of Athena, and that the Pope has been lying about her death 13 years ago. Aiolia swears loyalty to Athena, but is still confused by the actions of the Pope. He decides to return to Sanctuary to question the Pope himself. As he leaves, he tells Seiya that he was only knocked down by his attack because he saw the spirit of his brother Aioros in the Cloth.
[edit] Brainwashed by the Pope
When Seiya arrives at the Leo Temple, he sees that Aiolia is the guardian. He was pleased because he thought Aiolia would let him pass, but instead Aiolia attacks him. Seiya is surprised that Aiolia was loyal to the Pope now. He tells Aiolia that Athena is injured and they must reach the chambers of the Pope in 12 hours to save her. Although slightly alarmed, Aiolia did not seem any different, and insisted that the only way Seiya could pass the Temple is to defeat him. Realising that talking to Aiolia is pointless, Seiya attacks him, but is quickly beaten by his Lightning attacks. Meanwhile, in another part of Sanctuary, Shina is recovering from her previous injuries. Her student, Cassios, mentions that Seiya is now at the Leo Temple, but Aiolia was no longer the same Gold Saint he knew before, and tells her of what happened to him.
On his return, Aiolia left Shina in the care of Cassios, and went to the hall of the Pope to question him on the true actions of his brother. However, the Pope ordered the Gold Saint Virgo Shaka to attack Aiolia. While the two were focused in mental combat, the Pope does a sneak attack on Aiolia with his Demon Emperor Fist (Gen Rô Ma ô Ken), allowing him to manipulate Aiolia's mind. He then gives Aiolia one more chance: to kill the Bronze Saints that entered Sanctuary as they pass through the Leo Temple which he guards. However, the Pope comments that his manipulation of Aiolia is not complete, and his evil side would not be truly activated until he fights an opponent in battle. After he kills his opponent, the guilty would cause the Pope's control over him to be lost. Realising this, Shina gets up to try get to the Leo Temple and protect Seiya, but Cassios states that she would only be dying for Seiya. Cassios quickly knocked Shina unconscious, and tells her that despite being a powerful Saint, she is still just a woman, and he wishes that she could live happily with her life. He then leaves for the Leo Temple.
Back in the Leo Temple, Seiya seems to have seen through Aiolia's "Net of Light" Lightning Bolt attack, and managed to dodge it and land a kick to Aiolia. However, this only enraged Aiolia, whose expression turns to a truly murderous gaze (due to the control the Pope had on him worsening). Aiolia then injures Seiya's leg, reducing his mobility, and starts to brutally beat him up onto the floor. However, Cassios arrives at the Leo Temple, and states that he would like to be the one to kill Seiya, for winning the Pegasus Cloth of him and severing his ear in the past. But he instead turns to attack Aiolia, telling Seiya that Aiolia is under manipulation from the Pope, and it is only dispelled if someone dies in front of him. Cassios then commits suicide by protecting Seiya from Aiolia's Lightning Plasma. However, Aiolia did not show any guilt (Cassios did not die immediately from the blow), and says that he would now kill Seiya as well. Realising that Aiolia is still under the power of the Pope, Seiya draws up the maximum power from his Cosmo, and managed evade Aiolia's Lightning Plasma and knock him down with a Pegasus Meteor Punch. As Aiolia got up, Cassios dies, causing him to regain his senses. He immediately recognises Seiya, and realised he was under the Pope's control all this time. He healed Seiya from the injuries he sustained in the battle, and tells him and the newly arrived Bronze Saints to pass through while warning them about the next Gold Saint they would have to face.
At the end of the Sanctuary arc, Aiolia states that his brother's spirit could rest in peace and that his name was now cleared.
[edit] The Sleeping Golden Lion Awakens In Anger
After Bronze Saints have left for the battle against Poseidon, Aiolia approaches Mu and tells him that he feels as if the power of Athena is dying away, and that the Bronze Saints are in crisis as well. However, Mu tells him that under the orders of Roshi, all the Gold Saints must remain in Sanctuary for the battle to come. As they waited, Aiolia was eventually angered by Mu's actions, and marched off, stating that he would leave to help Seiya. Mu interrupts him and says that he would kill him if he left. Before the two could fight, the spirit of Aioros heard their dispute, and sent the Gold Cloth of Sagittarius to protect Seiya, stopping the quarrel between Mu and Aiolia. Later the Aquarius Cloth flies off from Sanctuary to protect Hyoga in similar fashion.
In the Hades arc, Sanctuary was invaded by the fallen Gold Saints who now serve Hades. Three of the deceased Gold Saints, Gemini Saga, Aquarius Camus and Capricorn Shura, eventually got past to the Cancer Temple, but before they could reach the Leo Temple, they were warped by the power of Virgo Shaka, and Aiolia noticed that he could no longer sense any of their cosmo.
Eventually, the true Spectres appeared at the Leo Temple, demanding to pass through. Aiolia says that none of them shall pass and that he would defeat them all. The Spectres also ask where Saga's group went, but Aiolia proudly states that he would not let any opponent pass through. One of the Spectres, Worm Raimi, manage to use his tentacles to bind Aiolia in place, allowing the remaining Spectres to pass through. Angered by this, Aiolia turns to fight Raimi, but was struck by his attack. However, he eventually managed to defeat Raimi with a Lightning Plasma. But during this time, the party of Spectres have already left, so Aiolia turns to pursue them.
Aiolia arrives at the Virgo temple with Aries Mu and Scorpio Milo, and is shocked to see that Saga, Camus and Shura have just killed the Gold Saint Virgo Shaka with Athena's Exclaimation, the forbidden technique. Saga, Camus and Shura charge up another Athena's Exclamation - threatening that they will do it again if anyone stands in their path. Mu reminds Saga, that there are also 3 Gold Saints standing in their path. Mu combines his powers with Leo Aiolia and Scorpio Milo to use Athena's Exclamation against them. The clashing powers of two Athena's Exclamation destroy the Virgo temple apart. Eventually, the combined power of these two attacks was deflected by the combined power of all 4 Bronze Saints. Athena beckons the two parties to stop fighting and come to her at her palace. Athena tells the fallen Gold Saints that they no longer have to suffer and commits suicide (secretly invoking the 8th sense as told by Virgo Shaka in his petals he sent her) and it was then that Shion's true intention was revealed: they came to Sanctuary as Spectres to tell Athena of the God Cloth, and that the only way to defeat Hades was to enter Hell alive using the Eight Sense - the ability to go the realm of the dead while having the will to live.
Mu, Aiolia and Milo arrive in Hades' castle, where they face Wyvern Rhadamanthys. To their shock, Rhadamanthys easily overpowers the three of them, revealing that in Hades castle is under Hades' will and cosmo - all Saints have their power reduced to 1/10 (this was stated by Gemini Kanon in the anime AND in the Manga). He defeats all three of them easily, and throws them into the abyss to Hell.
When Seiya was cast into the frozen Hell where those who dare to defy the gods are kept, he saw Mu, Aiolia and Milo trapped in there as well, apparently dead. However, upon Athena's arrival to Hell, they were revived by her power, and broke free. The three arrived in front of the Wall of Sighs, the gateway to Elysion, with Virgo Shaka and Libra Dohko, and the group attempts to break the wall with the weapons of the Libra Cloth, but fails. Eventually, they had to gather all 12 of the Gold Cloth, and sacrifice themselves to open this gateway, allowing the Bronze Saints to reach Elysion - the paradise of the Gods - the true home of Hades. His armour (Cloth) is given to Phoenix Ikki to use during the battle thereafter.
[edit] Episode G
In Megumu Okada's Saint Seiya Episode G, he is the protagonist, and it is expressed how truly ashamed he was to be Aioros' brother, dying his hair red, and constantly training to surpass him. Also, he holds a grudge against most of the Gold Saints as well the Master of Sanctuary (who, at the time, was Saga disguised), as he often engages in fights with them (such as when Deathmask hit Lithos), and disobeying the Pope's commands. Also, it is shown that even though he resented his brother and suffered every day because of him, he still loved him very much. One example of this is his battle with the Titan Ceos. In there, he sees his brother's spirit, who offers him words of comfort and encouragement.
He then remembered a day of training with his brother. He was arguing with his brother over a new attack, he, Aiolia, had developed. Aioros said that while his attack was insanely powerful, it also drained most of his cosmos and left him nearly dead. Aiolos then told him that he should "seal" the attack, and to only ever use it again to protect Athena, or his loved ones.
Aiolia then snaps out of it, and unleashes the attack, "Photon Burst", which defeats Ceos, and would have destroyed him, if another Titan had not saved him. Aiolia dedicates the attack to his brother, saying that he created it to protect him.
Aiolia holds his loved ones very close to his heart, more specifically his servants Lithos and Garan, considering them his family. In fact, Garan on instance says the whole reason Aiolia got stronger was not just because of himself, but because of his desire to protect everyone and everything dear to him.
[edit] Trivia
- Aiolia is named after the mythical island Aiolia or Aeolia, residence of Aiolos, the god of winds. Incidentally, his older brother is named Aiolos.
- Aiolia's classification of a Saint's power level is based on speed of the attack. He said that Bronze Saints could attack at speed of Mach 1, Silver Saints could attack at the speed of Mach 2 to Mach 5, but Gold Saints' attacks have the speed of light.
- When Seiya powers his Pegasus Meteor Punch to Gold Saint (lightspeed) level for the first time, his attack forms the "net of light" similar to Aiolia's Lightning Plasma. However, his Pegasus Meteor Punch never took this form again in the entire series.
- In the first several appearances of Aiolia (in the original Saint Seiya), he was not seen wearing his Gold Cloth, and was not referred to as a Gold Saint. This is commented by another Gold Saint at the start of Episode G, stating that: "Aiolia only wears his Gold Cloth to battle, and never wears it in the presence of the Pope (an act which was considered somewhat disrespectful)." This hold very true, even in the anime. When the Grand Pope requested an audience with Scorpio Milo, Aiolia simply walked requesting that he be sent to Japan instead of Milo to deal with the Bronze Saints. His presence was demanding, and he showed up without his armor.
- Phoenix Ikki wears the Leo Gold Cloth in the battle against Thanatos because he is of the Leo Zodiac Sign, but he was never seen to have ever met Aiolia in person (only in manga) but in the anime, Ikki actually met Aiolia in a flashback when the 5 Bronze Saints are watching the resurrection of their Bronze Cloths by the blood of the Gold Saints Mu, Milo, Shaka, Aldebaran and Aiolia.
