Lena Shaw Elementary is a public elementary school in Surrey, British Columbia part of School District 36 Surrey.

[edit] History

The school opened in 1959, and was named after an acting School Trustee.

Recently, the school's principal, Jack Mitchell, was honored by the school board for his "outstanding devotion, leadership and generosity to his students, staff and colleagues in the Surrey School District." He has been an advocate in helping children with special needs.

For example, in 2005, a student was hit by a car and remained in a coma for months. Jack visited him in hospital and had kept in close touch with the boy's parents during the family's ordeal. When another student had been diagnosed with inoperable brain tumours, he treated the boy to a Whitecaps soccer game.

An article on the Surrey School District site says that [1]:

Jack's support and leadership extends to his staff and peers. He empowers both new and experienced teachers, and identifies and encourages leadership abilities within his teaching staff. He has directly inspired and continues to mentor many new administrators. His positive outlook and sense of humour, even under the most difficult circumstances, are inspirational.

However, Jack Mitchell recently said that he would retire soon. On March 2, many teachers had tried to dress up as him, as it was "Job Day" (a "school spirit" day when students and teachers can dress up to be what job they want to have).
