Lego Castle
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lego Castle is a Lego theme featuring knights and castles. It was introduced in 1978 and continues to the present.

[edit] Crusaders (1984–1992)
The initial release of the Crusaders theme in 1984 began with King's Castle (#6080) which was one of the largest Castle sets produced. Twelve Knights and four horses were included. The walls of the castle could be opened to play inside the castle, and the castle itself had unusual architecture. Over the years, Crusaders were included in many sets along with the Black Falcons, Forestmen, and Black Knights. Examples include the Guarded Inn (#6067) in 1986, Castle Mini Figures (#6103) in 1988, and Knights' Challenge (#6060), a set that was the successor after the 1979 Knights' Tournament (#383/6083), in 1989 (ten years later). A unusual set was the Armor Shop (#6041) in 1986, which was the only set to have the rare black short sword and a Crusader Flag. Some believe it is strange that Lego never released a Crusader castle with a unique flag just like the Black Falcons had. The last Crusader castle released was King's Mountain Fortress (#6081) in 1990, which was one of the first sets to feature the newly invented knight helmet visor and armor pieces, crossbows and glow in the dark ghost. This castle was also the first castle to be mounted on a raised baseplate. Two exclusive elements the set included the only Crusader queen, and a black colored bird. A small Crusader set, King's Catapult (#1480) appears to be the only Lego castle set to be released in 1991. The last Crusader set produced is probably Treasure Chest (#1463 or #1695) in 1992, another small Crusader set that included a knight pulling a treasure chest cart. After that, the Crusader series was put to a halt. It was not until 2001, when Lego re-released the well known Guarded Inn re-numbered (#10000) as a Lego Legend under popular demand. The set consisted of two Crusader knights, a mounted Black Falcon Knight, and an inn keeper, staying over at an inn. This set was the only set to include red tudor walls. One change in the reissue was the horse saddle had two clips instead of one. Lego Castle had horse saddles with a single clip (except the horse barding saddles) at one side until 1992 when that was changed to two clips.

[edit] Forestmen (1987–1990)
The Forestmen theme was introduced in 1987 when Lego Castle released the first Forestmen set Camouflaged Outpost which was a hideout that featured a large tree adjacent to a cave where the Forestmen lived. The interior of the set could be opened to see inside the cave and enabled more play. The set included six Forestmen minifigures, the most Forestmen minifigures in a single set. This set was also one of the first sets to have a brown colored horse. In 1988, the Forestmen's Hideout was released; it was a small hideout that housed two Forestmen. The following year, the Forestmen's River Fortress, the largest Forestmen set, was released. This hideout was an abandoned castle covered with trees, vines and leaves, and was surrounded by a moat. It included five Forestmen, a Crusader and a raft. In 1990 the last original Forestmen hideout set, Forestmen's Crossing, was released. This set had a unique baseplate of a small stream printed on it with white dots marked on the studs to indicate where to place pieces. The set had an old tower and a large tree which were connected by a rope bridge that ran across the stream. This was the only set to include a Forestwoman minifigure. A few forestmen were included in other small non-Forestmen Castle sets, such as Castle Mini Figures. After 1990, the series was discontinued. In 1996, a new Forestmen sub theme was released called Dark Forest.

[edit] Black Knights (1987–1994)
There seems to be no known Black Knight set released in 1987 but the first well known Black Knights set released in 1988 was the Black Monarch's Castle (#6085). This set marked the beginning of the Black Knights series. The enormous black castle was guarded by tweleve knights, four of them mounted on horses. This was one of the first sets to include the horse "barding" piece. Also, the triangular dragon shields were invented that stood for the Black Knights. An interesting feature for the castle was it could be opened and closed using the special "hinge" pieces for more play in the interior. Two more small Black Knights sets were released in 1990 (and rerealeaed in 1992), which were Knights Stronghold (#6059) a town gate set that featured five knights along with a big catapult, and Black Monarch's Ghost (#6034). In 1992, Lego introduced the Black Knights Castle (#6086) which was originally called Dungeon Master's Castle until the name was changed in 1994. The castle was mounted on a baseplate. This particular set was considered one of the best Black Knights castles ever released. This magnificent set included ten knights, a Wolfpack renegade prisoner, and a glow in the dark ghost. Like Black Monarch's Castle, it included the horse barding piece but two mounted knights had helmet visors, armour piece and new dragon plumes avaible in four different colors just like the feather plumes. The oval shield with a red and blue dragon printed, was also one of the new pieces at the time after the dragon triangular shield. This set was the first major castle to have minifigures with facial hair, mustache and beard faces beside the usual plain lego face. Two other Black Knights sets were released the same year which were Sea Serpent (#6057), the biggest castle boat ever released and was the last set to include Black Falcon figures, and Black Knight (#6009), a small set that included a single full armoured knight with accessories. The Black Knights series continued until 1994 when the Royal Knights replaced them in 1995. The last Black Knights set released is believed to be Stone Bomber (#2890) in 1998, a miniset that included a knight who manned a tiny catapult.

The Fright Knights were a group of Knights that were ruled by a "king" named Basil The Bat Lord. It was the first "creepy" Castle theme, as it also had many skeletons, dragons, and a witch. The Fright Knights were apparently very harsh, as two of the sets, 6047 Prison Transport, and 6099 Traditor Transport, were based on captives. The Bat Lord's Castle was 6097 Night Lord's Castle.

[edit] Knights' Kingdom II (2004–2006)
Knights' Kingdom II, aimed at six to twelve year-olds, was first officially announced in November 2003, in the British version of the LEGO magazine. In spring 2004, the large action figures were released in Europe, whilst America received them several months later. Both continents obtained the playsets in the summer. Knights' Kingdom chronicles the legends of the Kingdom of Morcia, a fantasy world, and the adventures that take place within it. The main characters are the knights of the opposing factions. It is a revamped version of an earlier Knights' Kingdom LEGO theme, featuring larger, action-figure like characters as well as more colourfully attired mini-figures in the traditional sets. While officially titled Knights' Kingdom on its packaging, it is popularly known as Knights' Kingdom II in order to differentiate it from the original theme which only included LEGO mini-figures and featured different knight, king, and villain characters. It was also made into a trading card game and book series. 10176 King's Castle is part of this line, but is not in the official storyline. With the emergence of a new Castle line next year, and no emergence of sets for next year, the line has been discontinued.
[edit] Storyline
Long ago, a great sorcerer from another dimension invaded the peaceful lands of Ankoria, using his magic powers to conquer the land and its people and turning the animal of the land, into monsters. He was only defeated when Orlan, a powerful Knight of the Knights of the Citadel created the Shield of Ages, and used it to banish the Great Sorcerer. He then founded the Kingdom of Morcia, becoming its first King, and established the order of the Hero Knights, a group of men dedicated to protecting the land and people.
Generations later, the aging but wise King Mathias was the current ruler of the Kingdom, and Morcia prospered under his rule. However, his close advisor, Lord Vladek, was furious that years ago, he had lost the throne to Mathias in the Great Tournament, and he had been plotting revenge on the King ever since his defeat. Soon, he secretly captured the King and took control of the land with an army of magically corrupted Knights, commonly known as Shadow Knights, due to their dark armour. The people of Morcia could do nothing to break Vladek's hold on the land. But four remaining Knights, still loyal to King Mathias, Sir Jayko the Quick, Sir Rascus the Joker, Sir Santis the Strong and Sir Danju the Wise, joined together to investigate the King's disappearance. Sir Jayko found the King imprisoned deep within the dungeons under the Castle, where the Knights battled and defeated the Shadow Knights guarding him, and freed King Mathias. They had hoped that freeing him would stop Lord Vladek's rule, but Mathias told them that Vladek was using magical powers from the Great Sorcerer to defeat anyone who challenged him. The Knights' only hope was to recover the Shield of Ages from the Citadel of Orlan, deep within the Moorlands a land corrupted by the Great Sorcerers magic. The Knights hid the injured King Mathias in the forests, and then vowed to find the Shield of Ages.
Led by Sir Danju, the four Knights left Morcia and entered the Moorlands. At the Border Outpost, Sir Santis took the key to the Citadel from the Shadow Knights guarding it. They pressed onwards, with Danju and Jayko charting the way, and Rascus and Santis gathering food. After many adventures, fighting Shadow Knights and Moorlands beasts, they reached the Citadel of Orlan. At the entrance, they met an old man, who told them that only the best Knights could enter. The Knights challenged his proclamation, but he vanished into the air. Santis raised the drawbridge, allowing the Knights in. Danju showed them the way through the corridors of the Citadel. Together, Jayko and Santis overpowered a giant serpent, whilst Rascus climbed the tower and opened the way in with the key. The other Knights entered. When they reached the top of the tower, they were about to take the Shield of Ages, but Orlan himself, clad in mighty armour, stopped them. Jayko was about to attack him, but Danju instead asked the Orlan kindly for the Shield, claiming that they needed it to stop Vladek. Orlan, moved by compassion, gave the Knights the Shield. The Knights rejoiced, and began the journey back to Morcia.
On the way back to Morcia, the Knights encountered Vladek himself, mounted on a horse. Danju stayed behind and used a catapult to hold him back, whilst Jayko, Santis, and Rascus hurried to Castle Talonjay. There, they stopped a force of Shadow Knights from taking the Castle with siege towers. After that, the three younger Knights regrouped with Danju, and continued onwards towards the Castle of Morcia and the Grand Tournament. Along the way, they met up with King Mathias, who was by now fully healed. There, they learned that Lord Vladek was about to become King, as he had already defeated the other contestants for the crown with his magic. The four Knights and their King rushed to the Grand Tournament, to stop Lord Vladek from winning the Tournament and becoming the unrightful King of Morcia. As King Mathias, Danju, Santis and Rascus held back the Shadow Knights, Jayko battled Vladek for the fate of Morcia. In a joust, Vladek knocked the young Knight off his horse, and started shooting magic lightning at Jayko, but Jayko grabbed the Shield of Ages, and used it to reflect the lightning back at Vladek who was thrown to the ground by the power of his own lightning, defeating him. The Shadow Knights were freed from Vladek's curse, King Mathias was restored to the throne, and the Knights were given high honours for their deeds. But soon, Lord Vladek escaped from his prison and fled far away. Everyone in the Kingdom knew that he would be back someday.
The four Knights stopped Vladek and Mathias stripped him of his armour, sword, and shield, then locked him in the Dungeons. But Vladek fled to Ankoria, built a Dark Fortress, and created more Shadow Knights. Mathias used the Heart of the Shield on the Knights, giving them new armour, swords, and shields.
Vladek claimed the castle of Ankornia, and gathered an army to stop the knights. He got his power from a mask. The Shadow Knights were defeated by the Knights, and the king asked for them to open a gate, before they gather an army. However, they failed and opened the gate at the last second. Danju was captured, so Jayko came to save him.
Jayko fought Vladek on the top of the fortress, and soon enough, Jayko destroyed the mask. Sapped of his power, Vladek disappeared again. Later, Jayko was appointed the new king by Mathais.
[edit] Characters
This is a list of the characters in the Knights’ Kingdom line.
- Lord Vladek: (Spring 2004-Fall 2004, 2005-2006) He was the adviser to King Mathias, but he put him in a dungeon and claimed the King had gone missing, and that a tournament would be held to determine the new king. He entered, and planned to use the power of the Book of Morcia to win and become king. However, the four Hero Knights found Mathias and defeated Vladek. Some time after, Vladek fled, and found himself in the lost kingdom of Ankoria, where he regained power by creating the Vladmask, and took over the kingdom. It was here he adopted the title of “Lord Vladek”. He threated to use the Vladmask to destroy Morcia, but Sir Jayko destroyed the Vladmask and stopped him. Vladek has a dark visage, with burning embers for eyes and a mouth set in a permanent grimace. When his Vladmask is not on, he can cause fear in even the most stalwart of the Hero Knights. His emblem is the scorpion, and it is set into his shield for all to know. Vladek's sword is of the darkest coal, sinister and deadly. Vladek is an oddity among the Knights’ Kingdom series kits, in that he is the one of the very few figures to have only one movable arm via a dial on their back. This is supposedly because of his skill with the sword, and disdain of the shield. Vladek's sword is perfectly capable of deflecting all arms that can be brought to bear, and it is rumored he can split an arrow in mid air.now Vladek has a new black and silver armor, red cape, and Sorcerers Sword which is capable of deflecting boulders, and creating things out of ruins.
- King Mathias: (????-Spring 2004, Fall 2004-Winter 2005) He was the king of Morcia. He was the wise and just ruler of Morcia. He is currently retired. He uses basic light blasts from his sword to battle.

In Morcia, Jayko, now King for defeating Vladek in Ankoria, heard about Vladeks return, and his army of rogue knights, and how he's after the power of the Mistlands Tower, King Jayko after hearing this, teams up with two newly trained knights, Sir Kentis, and Sir Adric, who must help King Jayko defend the tower from Lord Vladek, and his army of Rogue Knights. In the end "The Shield of Ages" is reforged by the mysterious Blacksmith (who is hinted as being the first king of Morcia, Orlan)the Shield is then used to imprison Lord Vladek in an orb on top of the tower, the Rogue Knights get trapped in a dungeon, and Morcia is saved. Also, the old knights did not die,the comic shows that Sir Danju is now a trainer, who trained Sir Adric, and Sir Kentis.
