[edit] Plot Synopsis

The story starts out with Vahn, a youth living in the quiet town of Rim Elm. Rim Elm is protected from the Mist by an enormous wall. The world is covered in Mist, which turns the peaceful Seru into monsters. In the middle of Rim Elm is the Genesis Tree. One day, after the hunters return from a very unsuccessful hunt, a mysterious man enters Rim Elm and destroys the wall. He calls himself Zeto and claims that the humans are a race that deserves extinction and releases many monsters into the town. Vahn runs to the Genesis Tree, which begins to glow. The Ra-Seru, Meta, that resided in the tree attaches to Vahn and tells him to gather the villagers around the Genesis Tree so he can use their prayers to help revive it. The Genesis Tree pushes back the mist and the next morning Vahn starts his journey to destroy the mist, starting by going towards Drake Castle. Once there he finds all of the inhabitants locked themselves in cages, he passes through to go to Mt.Rikuroa, where he meets Noa at the peak. Then, from the heavens Zeto appears and also stops Vahn from restoring the Genesis Tree to its full power. After a brutal fight, Noa runs over to Terra, who is dying. Terra reveals herself to actually be a Ra-Seru who took control over the wolf in order to keep Noa safe until she was old enough to accept her destiny. As the wolf goes off to die, Vahn and Noa revive the Genesis Tree and purge Drake Castle of its Mist. Vahn and Noa decide they should travel together, as their destinies are intertwined. They head off to meet with the King of Drake Castle and get the flood gate dropped. He accepts, and they head off to Biron Monastery, where supposedly another Genesis Tree resides in the forest near there. At the monastery, they are treated differently with their Ra-Seru, but the head monk accepts that they must go to the forest to revive the tree if anything is going to be solved. The head monk accepts, and sets a high monk, Gala, to show them the way and sends another one, Songi, to the other Forest. The group heads to East Voz Forest and discovers that the tree has died, but left behind a Ra-Seru egg. They hear an attack on the monastery and rush back. They discover that Songi attacked the monastery and let the monsters inside. Many people are infected with Seru, but many are holed up inside the kitchen. Gala decides that he must go with Noa and Vahn and set things right by reviving the Genesis Tree. In West Voz Forest, the group discovers a healthy Genesis Tree, but also discover that Songi has been infected with a Seru, making him all the more dangerous. Gala fights, but in vain; Songi is too powerful with his Seru and runs off leaving the group with a vicious enemy to contend with. After the battle, the group revives the Genesis Tree, and the Ra-Seru egg hatches, telling the group that it is Ozma, and he is Gala's Ra-Seru. At first, Gala does not accept Ozma, but he does after deciding to use the power to defeat Songi.

The Genesis Trees have revealed a factory in the middle of heavy Mist, and the three heroes decide to go check it out. Inside the dungeon, the group finds Songi, now working for those who create the Mist, and he challenges Gala. Defeated, Songi retreats, allowing the party to meet the mysterious man deep within the mist making machine. It's none other than Zeto, the very man responsible for the attack on Rim Elm; he's in charge of creating the Mist. Zeto belittles the group before changing into a monster and attacking. After a ferocious battle, the party detroys the Mist machine, effectively ridding that area of Mist forever. But the Ra-Seru tell the group that other areas suffer from the mist and must be cleansed as well. The group decides to go. They head off the Sebucus Islands.

The group finds themselves in Jeremi, totally covered in Mist. They discover a tower with a Genesis Tree at the top, and head for it, through the Mist-laden halls of the Sky Gardens' bottom floors. Arriving at the top, they discover a Seru named Berserker attempting to eat the tree. After stopping him, they revive the tree. The town celebrates their freedom from the mist, and thanks the group. The group heads towards Vidna, which is the greatest spa in all the land. The town is protected from the Mist by giant windmills. There, they learn of Octam, a town where ancient sages sleep, who predict the future. The group decides to go, but once they arrive, they discover that the whole town is engulfed in Mist. They learn that the townsfolk went underground in order to escape from the Mist, and they locked the door to the passageway. At Octam is a mysterious woman named Cara. She tells the party of the underground passage. They learn that there is an ancient passage to the underground, The Shadow Gate. At the Gate, the group runs into the Delilases. A strange group who seem to be working for whomever controls the Mist. Underground, the group meets with the ancient sages, Hari, and they send the heroes to kill Xain, a Seru-controlled centaur who is destroying their town from underground. An earthquake swallows up the building Hair was on, but their spirits tell them of their destinies of the Ra-Seru: to destroy the Mist and bring peace back to the world and that they'll meet again at an unexpected place.

After the Hari die, they decide to head for the only Genesis Tree near Octam, Mt. Letona. They pass through Ratayu on the way and vow to find the tree. The team meets Songi on top of the mountain and defeats him. Songi belittles the team for their uselessness and leaves. The teams revives the Genesis Tree and heads back to Ratayu. The town's mayor expresses delight in their victory over the Mist and invites them to stay. Something unusual is going down in Ratayu, as young women must sacrifice themselves to a Seru to appease it. Noa decides to disguise herself as a Seru Bride and see what's up. Vahn and Gala wait for her to enter the sealed room below Ratayu Castle, and see that there is an enormous Seru underneath the town. They stop them from feeding Noa to the Seru, but the mayor has a secret. He was being controlled by a Sim-Seru, a powerful Seru that can control an individual with or without Mist, and he has been feeding the Juggernaut in order for it to be used to destroy the world.

The group defeats the Sim-Seru, and head off to Dohati's Castle, to defeat the master of the Mist machine. Inside, the group meets with Dohati, the lord of the castle, the man who set Xain out on his task of destroying Octam, and the person who gave Van the Sim-Seru. The team defeats Dohati, who changes into a monster just as Zeto did. The group destroys the machine but notices that a Ra-Seru egg was apparently powering the device. Meta, Terra, and Ozma confirm that the Ra-Seru egg was stolen and the power was used to create the mist, but the egg died in the process.

The team heads off to Octam, to meet with the mayor and ride the Tram to the Karisto Kingdom, the last area infested with Mist. But the tram cannot make the entire journey, so they let the car go mid-run and crash into the station where they meet Cara again. They head towards Sol Tower and find that the upper floors aren't taken over as Sol rises too far above the mist. They meet with the head monk of the Biron Monastery on the roof. The monk tells the group that the Genesis Tree in the basement is dead, but he has a baby tree in his possession. However, Gaza, a local Seru hunter, will not let the group raise the tree and cause his prey to leave; he challeneges them to a fight. After the fight, Gaza is near death, but Songi arrives and spirits him away. The group heads to the basement. Songi is waiting for them, with a new and improved Gaza, armed with a powerful Sim-Seru. The group defeats him after a heated battle. Gaza dies, and the group raises the Genesis Tree using his life-force.

The group hears about a doctor who has been working on a way to combat the Mist. They head to Usha Research Center and meet with Dr. Usha, who tells the team that there is a fierce Seru in the mountains, and he has created a TimeSpace bomb to destroy it. Unfortunately, he needs a Fire Droplet in order for it to work. Uru Mais, an ancient structure, holds the key to unlocking the Fire Droplet. After testing the group's mettle with challenges, the Ancients decide that the three are worthy of the Droplet. After going back to the Research center, the group heads to Buma with the TimeSpace bomb. The city is completely frozen over from the Seru in the north. Upon entering the cave and reaching the Seru, the group meets with the Delilas family. They've meet before, at the Shadow Gate, where they taunted the group. Working now with the Seru, the Delilases attack the group. Each member defeats one of the three Delilases and think they've won. However, the Delilases combine themselves with Koru, the massive Seru, and plan to blow up the entire continent of Karisto Kingdom. The party rushes to the bottom of the cavern, and destroy the Seru before it can destroy half the world. Afterwards, the group head to Buma, where they run into Cara. Cara tells them of her secret love with a Soren, ancient people who still retain the ability to fly. The Soren have severed all ties to humanity, and believe that humanity is destined to be destroyed because of their own downfalls. Grantes, Caras' lover, gives the group the Soren flute, and tells them to go on top of Mt. Dhini. At the mountain, the group summons some of the Soren, but they are displeased. Grantes was at one time a Soren, but had his wings removed after helping the Mist creators, and is banished from the Soren Camp. However, the group tells the Elder that they are destined to bring about the end of th mist era and bring peace. The Elder takes them to another Mist generator, the Floating Castle. Inside, the group finds Songi destroying it already, it seems that this generator is a decoy, to lure the group to their demise. Zora attacks them, but dies. The group also discovers that the mist generators need a Ra-Seru egg to operate, a secret which the Ra-Seru have been keeping from the party. Narrowly escaping, with the help of Grantes, the party heads to the only location left, Conkram.

Conkram, which is Noa's birth place, has been engulfed by a giant Sim-Seru (albeit, a giant clam) and all the denisens have been swallowed as well. Conkram was Noa's home, but she was taken away when the Mist first took over. Terra found her, and raised her, but refused to tell her this, and Noa now doesn't trust her. Noa's parents tell the group that the only way to enter the final Mist Generator is to obtain a Nemesis Gem, but none exist anymore in this world. The group grabs the Seru Flame and heads into Conkrams past. It is here where we learn the creation of the Mist. Sol and Conkram were in a stalemate of a bloody war. Prince Cort (Noas brother), however, has created a weapon that makes Seru ten-times stronger than normal, he calls this weapon "Mist". Unfortunately, the demonstration goes haywire and the Mist begins to spread out of control. The group heads into the bowels of the city to find Rogue, an evil entity that is behind the uncontrollable state of the Mist. After defeating it, Cort is arrested, and the King gives the group the Nemesis Gem. In the present, the group heads to the final Mist Generator, Jettes' Absolute Fortress. Inside, the group faces Jette, and his ultra-powered Sim-Seru. Jette is defeated, and realizes his mistake of using the Mist, but dies soon afterward. The group desends deeper into the fortress, then find the center. They face Cort, who's totally controlled by his obsession with Mist and fights the group. Defeated, he falls into the pit with the Juggernaut, and the whole fortress explodes.

The group, victorious, heads home. At Rim Elm, the village celebrates the end of the Mist. However, the celebration is cut short as Songi enters, and tells them of his "Destiny" of furthering the Mists cause. He decideds to start anew, right in the middle of Rim Elm. The Juggernaut arrives, and engulfs the town, making it into a giant Sin-Seru, much like Conkram. He disappears and heads off to Seru-Kai, to destroy the Ra-Seru. The group heads after him, and confronts Songi infront of the Ancient Genesis tree. Absorbing its power, the group heads back to Rim Elm, which is now engulfed in the Bio Castle. Traversing into the very depths of the Earth, the group find Cort, fused with the Juggernaut into one being. He sees himself as the ultimate Seru, and attempts to destroy the Ra-Seru, and the holders of them. After a vicious battle, the group barely defeats Cort, but the Bio Castle still lives. Meta, Ozma, and Terra use their power to destroy the Mist once and for all.

At the End. Gala heads to Biron Monastery to become head teacher, Noa finds a baby Cort and begins to raise him, and Vahn traverses the world on his boat.

[edit] Battle System

Legend of Legaia's most notable feature is its battle system. The system is conditional turn-based in nature but beyond that lacks resemblance to almost any other game. Instead of simply choosing a spell or attack, on a turn the player chooses a combination of moves (examples: left-handed punch, high kick, etc.) and then allows the attack to 'resolve'. A sequence of moves (as long as 13 actions in a string) could form stronger attacks. This combo-based system was revolutionary for its time. Also important to the battle system are Seru monsters, such as Gimard and Viguro. Defeating a Seru-monster in battle while wearing a Ra-Seru provides a chance that the Ra-Seru will absorb the Seru monster. If this happens, the character wearing that Ra-Seru can summon that Seru to perform a magic attack, which becomes stronger the more it is used. As with most magic systems in RPG's, this consumes magic power. In addition, there is a "Spirit" command, in which a character defends for one round, but takes reduced damage and on the next turn can perform a longer sequence of attacks, and will have more Art Points available for combos. This is especially helpful when a player knows that a boss is about to use a very powerful attack, such as when Zeto uses his "Big Wave" attack which takes one turn to charge up.

[edit] Miracle Arts

Miracle Arts are the most powerful Arts available. There is one for each character. These consume 99 AP, but deal great damage. These Arts are simply a combination of five Normal Arts and one Hyper Art, but being able to pull off many Arts in one combination of commands makes it worthwhile. They can be learned just like Normal Arts, but only a few players have learned them by themselves. Luckily, they are in the list once you learn them.

[edit] Seru, Ra-Seru,Sim-Seru,and Rouge Shards

This serves as the game's Magic System. Seru are creatures that exist in the Mist. Unlike most games, where you learn Magic by leveling up or using items and equipment, you must defeat these Seru in order to wield their magical powers. However, chances to learn them can vary. First, the final blow against a Seru is advised to be a simple physical attack. Arts can ruin chances, as Seru don't 'die' when you learn them, but simply become weak enough to be learned. Second, never use learned Seru against them, as it will greatly lower your chances.

Seru were originally benevolent creatures, designed by God to help man protect themselves against the powerful creatures. When worn by a human, they granted him/her advanced powers. For a while, things went well, until a strange mist covered the land. When within the mist, the Seru turn evil and posses humans against their will.

Ra-Seru are the Seru's counterparts, siding with the protagonists. You can only learn Seru when the character has a Ra-Seru, which all of them should have by one point in the game. During the game, you can learn Ra-Seru as well. Based on their power and effects, they are considered the Summon Magic of the game.

Sim-Seru are a special type Seru from Legend of Legaia, that have been created by man. There are several different types of Sim-Seru, ranging from the mighty Juggernaut, to the Seru given to the Four Wise Men of Conkram by Cort. Unique among Sim-Seru is the one worn by Songi, since it is both Sim-Seru and Ra-Seru. Other important Sim-Seru are the ones worn by Lord Saryu of Ratayu, and the one given by Songi to the Sol warrior, Gaza.

Rouge Shards are parts from a giant being who lives in and created the terrifying mist. An example of one in the game is on Prince Cort's back. It actually drove him to create an aritficial mist in the hopes that it would release itself upon legaia.

[edit] Other aspects of Legaia

[edit] Genesis Trees

Genesis Trees are located at various point throughout the world of Legaia, and each one has the power to keep a large area free of the Mist. One of Vahn's objectives is to revive every Genesis Tree, and thus free nearby towns from the mist. Genesis Trees that are not yet revived, however, are weakened by the mist, and the one in West Voz Forest dies before Vahn can revive it. In addition, some town are not close enough to a Genesis Tree to feel the effects of their revival, and the mist in those place can only be removed by destroying its source.

[edit] Seru Brides

Seru Brides are a form of human sacrifice performed in the town of Ratayu. Following a visit from Dohati, Lord Saryu is possessed by a Sim-Seru, and initiates the system of "Seru Brides". Women from Ratayu are taken to the basement of Saryu's palace, where they are fed to the Juggernaut via a large machine. Once Juggernaut has consumed enough women, it will be fully matured and ready to release upon the world. The Ra-Seru heroes put an end to this practice by storming Lord Saryu's Palace, but in the process, Noa almost becomes a "Seru Bride" herself. By defeating Saryu, they break the Sim-Seru's hold over him, and he regains his sanity and put a stop to the sacrifices once and for all.

[edit] Ra-Seru

As with the Seru, Ra-Seru attacht themselves to human hosts, but instead of turning them into violent monsters, makes them super-human and allows them to travel through the mist without being taken over. The Ra-Seru were created in order to defeat the Mist, but only a chosen few can equip said Seru. They have a mind of their own, as well as ethics, morales, and personalities. Also, a Ra-Seru can read the mind, and manipulate the mind just as Seru do, however, due to their morals and values, they will never do this.

[edit] Sim-Seru

Sim-Seru are powerful Seru that can control a persons mind. They are created solely for manipulation. Unlike regular Seru, they are not effected by the berserking power of the Mist and can be used outside of mist as well. The Sim-Seru are often controlling the person it is attached to, and the Sim-Seru is being controlled further by someone else. Sim-Seru are powerful indeed, but corrupt those who wear them for too long.
