[edit] Vandalism
ok, i will wait for the conclusions of your investigation on copyright-violation. I wouldn´t call it vandalism though.
greetings,
Tappe
- Dear Teppe, I answered you already with apologies here [1] on your user page, please read it before you accuse me of anything. Also according to Wikipedia, you do vandalize this user page, if you want to talk to me please do not write the massage on my user page. You may contact me via email. I already fixed the misunderstandings/ accreditations and i made an apology. Again thank you and best wishes for the new year.
I accept the apology and wish you all the best.
Tappe
Mr Tappe, thank you very much and please contact me via email or here if you find any problems with the images. Also please help us to improve Geogian related articles. We would greatly apreciate your help. Best Regards. Ldingley 16:24, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Nicholas Pavlovich Ignatiev
It would be nice to have a cite in the article in regard to this line about his Ignatishvili ancestors. (Not that I doubt it, but it is not in EB11, and probably not on the web either, so you must have found it in a book somewhere?) Vmenkov 03:17, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Quick quesiton
Luis, I absolutely loved your image of the "Soviet Armenia" poster: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:AAED004264.jpg where did you get it from? I collect old soviet armenian posters and would love to find a source for them. you can email me at alex (at) bonsaisandals dot com —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.202.220.155 (talk) 22:05, 8 December 2006 (UTC).

[edit] South Ossetia
a quick question: has the region officially been elevated to the status of an Autonomous Republic or is this just the governments proposal?
[edit] Image:Armeniansoldier.jpg
Luis, I would like to know, is this a picture of an Armenian family (mother with children and their Fedayee father?) Also, where did you find this image? -- Clevelander 14:31, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
yes, it is an autonomous region for ages (unfortunately). but things change - it may gain independence soon.
[edit] Dmitri Sanakoyev
Hey Luis. I expanded the article a bit. You did a great job on the Salvation Union, leaving lazybones Kober with one less thing to worry about. :))) --Kober 16:26, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Ossetia
Thanks Ldingley. I have only marginal knowledge about Ossetia, but I know Russian tactics applied in Transnistria and I think are the same. I saw an article about Ossetia and I've draw attention about it in Ossetia talk page, as a link which can be used by other users for their edits.--MariusM 15:49, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
Soon, Romania will be part of European Union. First priority for Romanian President are the "frozen conflicts". Russia will have to abandon all and to recognize its defeat.
[edit] Your reference and the Russian parliament
The reference that you provided says that 437 voted to fortake into consideration Abkhazia's appeal to be recognised as independent state, not to incorporate it.
P.S Nice picture of that Ancient Greek vase. It's plot has similarities with another Greek myth:Orestes killing Egisfus.Dimts 16:40, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
Speaking about Ancient Greece. You can find such a quote on the Neoptolemus page: Neoptolemus was the father of Molossus and ancestor of Olympias, the mother of Alexander the Great.Neoptolemus is just a myth, and he can't be an ancestor of a historical character.Maybe the statetment should be something like this:Neoptolemus was the father of Molossus and ,according to the myth, an ancestor of Olympias, the mother of Alexander the Great?
P.S His Greek name was "Neoptolem" (I assume the "us" part was added by the Romans).Dimts 17:16, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] About the Coptic Project
Hello Luis and thanks for contacting me about your Coptic project. I would like to let you know that there are some flaws to the article (at least from my Coptic point of view). For instance, Ethiopian and Eritrean Orthodox are not Copts. The term is used inaccurately here. - So would you like me to make the cahnges I feel are appropriate to the article, then you could compare them with your original version? - Also, what exactly did the Arab users object to? Any specific section? Thanks a lot for your interest in the Copts and in our history and culture. User:Lanternix 8 December 2006 (EST)
- Ok cool. I will change the article about the Copts on your user page and will let you know when I finish working on it so you could take a look. Then you could certainly ask me questions about the changes I suggest. Thanks again. - User:Lanternix 8 December 2006 (EST)
[edit] Your question
Hi. I replied to your question on my talk page. Pasquale 19:19, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, Luis. I got your new message, thank you. Yes, I agree that the question of what language was spoken at Troy in the 13th century BC is highly controversial, because of insufficient evidence. Personally, however, I would doubt very much that Greek was the language spoken at Troy at that time. I would envision four different hypotheses, all of which are deserving of consideration: (1) an Indo-European language of the Anatolian group, possibly akin to Lydian; (2) an Indo-European language of some different group (other than Greek), such as Phrygian or, better yet, Daco-Mysian; (3) a non-Indo-European language of the Tyrrhenian group, related to Lemnian (attested on the nearby island of Lemnos) and perhaps Etruscan; (4) a non-Indo-European language of some other group (Aegean? Pelasgian?). Of these, hypothesis (3) may be correct, but perhaps with reference to a period before the 13th century. It is possible that, by the 13th century, the language spoken was a different one, perhaps consistent with hypothesis (2) (see Caucones). As for hypothesis (1), it is usually assumed that there were Anatolian languages spoken in the northwestern corner of Anatolia (see Lutescan language), but the evidence is inconclusive. For the language of the Mysians, for example, opposing claims are made, claiming it was EITHER akin to Lydian and Carian, hence hypothesis (1), OR to Paionian, hence hypothesis (2). As you can see, this is quite a minefield. Pasquale 23:47, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

- Hi Luis. I got your message. Thanks for all the compliments and good wishes. The same to you. The Wikipedia is a good starting point to explore all those possible connections. But much of it is highly speculative, so you need to take everything with a huge grain of salt. The objective evidence is often so scanty that it is virtually impossible to come to any solid conclusions about anything, and, when you think you finally figured it out, along comes another tiny piece of evidence that pushes you in the opposite direction. So you need to keep an open mind at all times. There were obviously quite a few language families and subfamilies present in the Balkans and Anatolia in the 2nd millennium BC, some Indo-European, some not, with some of the latter possibly related among themselves, some not.
- The Etruscan conenction has a very old history. Since ancient times, there have been two schools of thought regarding the origin of the Etruscans, one that they came from Lydia or thereabouts (but that is not necessarily to say that they were Lydians!), and one that they were autochthonous. In any case, the similarities with Lemnian are striking, and the parallels with Eteocypriot are also very interesting (see Etruscan_language#Related_languages and follow the links). The pre-Hittite nation in Hatusa you referred to spoke Hattic, a non-Indo-European language possibly belonging to an earlier stratum and probably unrelated to the Tyrrhenian or Aegean languages. For Hattic, a connection with the Northwest Caucasian languages has been proposed.
- I wouldn't call the differences between Mycenean and Classical Greek drastic, especially if you view Mycenean within the context of ALL the Greek dialects. One of the problems with Mycenean is that it is very hard to retrieve the exact phonetic values especially of the consonant phonemes. I don't know what the Mycenean name for Troy might have been, but certainly BOTH the Troia name AND the Ilion/Ilios names are very ancient. As for Miletus, the phonetics of the Greek name match Milawata rather than Millawanda. Finally, I personally don't buy the Achaeans-Ahhiyawa connection on the phonetic level. I believe the phonetics of the two names simply do not allow such a connection. They may well have been the same people, but I don't believe the two names (Achaeans and Ahhiyawa) can be the same. [edit] PLEASE: Talk:Copt/Ethnicity FIRST!
Hello there User:Ldingley, too much talk has been going on about the issue of the ethnic identity of the Copts; please, do not ignore it altogether and refer to Talk:Copt/Ethnicity before editing the article itself on the subject (WP:civil). I'm pointing to your recent addition of an infobox that included an identification of the Ancient Egyptians and Amazigh ethnicities as "related" ethnic groups. __Maysara 09:22, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Colchis&Iberia
Dear Luis, how are you? These articles are potentially expandable and improvable. Unfortunately there are actually only three editors, you, Soso and me, who are seriously interested in Georgia. That’s why most Georgia-related articles are underdeveloped. We need more knowledgably people to be involved, not a bunch of biased "encyclopedists" who have remote knowledge of Georgia and its people.
I’ve read somewhere that one of the Colchian tribes took part in the defense of Troy against the Greek besiegers. I don’t remember more details, unfortunately.
Btw, have your read David Braund’s Georgia in Antiquity: A History of Colchis and Transcaucasian Iberia 550 BC-AD 562? Looks interesting, doesn’t it? I’m currently working on the August Uprising in Georgia article, but I have very limited time. Lang provides valuable info on that tragic event and I’ll add it to the article. Thanks to you, Lang’s book has already become my best friend.:) I wish I had enough time to transform all the info from this wonderful work into the Wikipedia articles. - Hey Luis. Thanks for your kind words and info on the Committee. Just a question: Kote Abkhazi had been shot by the Soviets in 1923 and hence could not lead the committee in the 1930s. Maybe it was his son, Nikoloz, who was a chairman? Btw, he later emigrated to Canada and built a well-known garden on Vancouver Island, Victoria, British Columbia. --Kober 04:27, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi, sorry for the late response, I’ve been very busy. Thanks for the collage for the Azerbaijani people. We had something like that originally in the article, but then we had disputes with regard to whom to include and whom not. So let’s wait and see the reaction of others to the new picture. Thanks a lot, Luis. How are you? How the things are going in Canada? I found the shah’s letter to George XII in Fisher, William Bayne (1991), The Cambridge History of Iran. - Hey Luis. A very useful template. Thank you! --Kober 20:06, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Georgia (country)-hist-stub
Hi - it has come to our notice that you have recently created a new stub type. As it clearly states at WP:STUB, at the top of most stub categories, on the template page for new Wikiprojects and in many other places on Wikipedia, new stub types should be proposed prior to creation at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals, in order to check whether the new stub type is already covered by existing stub types, whether it is named according to stub naming guidelines, whether it reaches the standard threshold for creation of a new stub type, whether it crosses existing stub type hierarchies, and whether better use could be made of a WikiProject-specific talk page template.
In the case of your new stub type, it is already covered by existing stub types (most specifically {{Georgia-stub}} and {{Georgia-bio-stub}}, it is not named according to stub naming guidelines, and it does not reach the standard threshold for creation of a new stub type, it crosses existing stub type hierarchies. Only five pages used it, two of which are not stubs, two of which are already covered by {{Georgia-bio-stub}} (since they were about people, not historical events), and one of which was a user talk page, not an article! What's more, Georgia-stub has only 100 articles in it, not enough to currently require splitting, and both the new template and category are incorrectly named according to stub naming guidelines. Please note that this stub type has been listed for deletion at WP:SFD. Grutness...wha? 02:02, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

Are you kidding? What about your box about 'violent separatism' and 'unity of Georgia'? imho they are equally biased. I could tell you exactly the same words you've written to me. I hope that your opinion that those separatists are violent and your desire fro united Georgia does not affect your contributions and myself try to follow the policy of NPOV. Actually I think that every person who knows a lot about such a controversial subject necessarily considers one side to be (mostly) right and the other to be (mostly) wrong so it's quite honest to write about one's position. [edit] Abkhazian 1917 demographics reference
Hi - I've checked the reference you've provided for the 1917 statistics (those that claim there were 38,000 Abkhaz). The second reference ([2]) is to the graph which shows there were no less than 50,000 of them at that time. Could you clarify it, please. Btw this graph gives the same numbers of Georgians and Abkhaz (~25,000 and ~60,000) in 1897 as the B&E does (quite naturally imho - if you believe in soviet censi why don't you believe in Russian one).
The first reference is to a book drafted at the Parliament of Georgia based on the recommendations of the parliamentary ad hoc Commission on the Problems of Abkhazia ([3]) by Vakhtang Kholbaia written 3 years after the war. If it's not pov I don't know what is. Alaexis 21:29, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
He-he, fascinating book, really. This is what he considers 'deserving attention': Abkhaz is a true child of nature. He is still in the ages when humans cared only about filling their stomachs. Future prospective scares him. He has as much corn as he needs, enough just until the next harvest. Abkhaz does not like to getting tired.. I've also checked from where he himself took the 1917 data: 1917 Agriculture Census. Tb. 1992, pg. 14-19. Doesn't look particularly convincing, does it? Regards. Alaexis 21:38, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
- No problem at all providing english-language link. Look at the graph you yourself have made reference to - [4]. I'm sure it's a legitimate source (unlike a book published in Tbilisi during the war). Alaexis 22:39, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
-
- Good morning. I didn't quite understood you. The total population of Abkhazia during each census is written under the graph - 106 th. in case of 1897. So there were 60+25+15 (hard to say more exactly from the graph). Clearly they've also counted Mingrelians and Samyrzakanians with Georgians.
- You always ask me to provide English-language ref not from one of the conflicting sides, then why did you make a ref to Russian-language Georgian book? I'm not complaining because in this case I'll consider Russian-language documents found on Abkhazian and Russian sites perfectly legal. Alaexis 07:43, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Blocked indefinitely
I'm sorry to hear that you're uploading copyrighted images again. A quick review of other recent uploads show that you've begun uploading images from the web again claiming they reside in your collection or were taken by you. I really thought we had this sorted out last year when you took a few month sabbatical. I have blocked your account indefinitely to prevent any further harm for the time being while your images are reviewed. If you can agree never to upload another image, I would consider unblocking your account. As much as your work here is respected and valued, your continual blatant copyright violations cannot be ignored. Shell babelfish 01:35, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
- I made all necessary references to all images and none of them were copyrighted, and none of them were copied without permission, you did not consult me before blocking. Untill you dont provide any evidence of wrong doing, you are abusing your admins powers. I will not upload any images any more. Ldingley 22:39, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
-
- There are several problems with the images you are uploading:
- You have placed OTRS Confirmation tags on several of them yourself claiming permission has been lodged with Wikimedia. In one case, the ticket number was completely bogus (Image:Pages dosh-14(0)-1.jpg) and in all the others, the ticket did not specify the permission you claimed even after more than eight attempts to correspond with you. Only members of the OTRS team should place the confirmation tags.
- Many of the images you uploaded are from TrekEarth; quite of few of these you claim as being in your "collection". More than one of the photographers from TrekEarth has contacted OTRS asking for the photographs to be removed due to copyright infringement (you might remember this is how I originally became involved in the situation). Other photographers that were contacted have never heard of you and do not recall ever having transferred the copyright on their photos. Examples of these would be Image:Svanetiabeauty.jpg or Image:Pig guarding ananuri.jpg
- Despite these and other problematic licensing concerns, you have yet to provide proof in a single instance that you own the copyright or have been given permission to use any of these photos. In fact, in cases where we have been able to locate the copyright holder, we have found exactly the opposite - copyright holders are completely unaware of their photos being used on Wikipedia and have not their permission or transferred their copyright. A good example would be Image:Mestiya 2.jpg originally posted on http://www.caucasus-pictures.blogspot.com but claimed as your own from July 12, 2006 until you were caught on December 29, 2006 - after this, you did add the source, but still had no permission to use the picture, nor claim copyright on it.
- There are several problems with the images you are uploading:
-
- After my review of your uploads over the last two months, I have deleted more than 80% of them straight out as copyright violations; I am reviewing others who's status isn't as clear. Many of these were uploaded using the same claims used last year - you were told at that time that further deception about the copyright status of any photographs you upload could result in further measures being taken against you. You have chosen to ignore Wikipedia's policies and continue to place the project in harm's way. I will be placing information about this block on the Community Noticeboard so the community can discuss whether or not the block should remain indefinite. Shell babelfish 03:25, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] About Image:GJ004780.jpg
Hi, i would like to put the following picture Image:GJ004780.jpg - in article Kakheti - on other wikipedia (german, french, spanish...), but i need before to upload this picture on Commons. The problem is about the licence: even if it's look nice, i guess it will not be accepted under Commons... Can you change the licence by something like GDFL or Creative Commons as "cc-by-sa-2.5" which are similar to the present licence. Best Regards. Guérin Nicolas 19:04, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
