Lazarus Whitehead Powell (October 6, 1812 - July 3, 1867) was the Governor of Kentucky from 1851 to 1855, and later a United States Senator from Kentucky.

Born in 1812 in Henderson, Kentucky, he attended the common schools, graduating from St. Joseph College, Bardstown, Ky., in 1833. Powell studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced at Henderson as of 1835. His political career began the following year as a member of the State house of representatives. 1844-48 He was a presidential elector on the Democratic ticket 1844, an unsuccessful candidate for governor in 1848, and Governor of Kentucky from 1851 to 1855, winning by a small margin over his law partner, Archibald Dixon, who had been Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky from 1844 to 1848. Later, Powell was a Democratic United States Senator, serving from March 4, 1859 to March 3, 1865. Thereafter, he resumed the practice of law, unsuccessfully ran for another term in the United States Senate, and died in 1867 in Henderson, Kentucky. Powell County, Kentucky, is named after him. He is buried at the Fernwood Cemetery in Henderson, Kentucky.
