[edit] About
(Sam H.) Lawson Middle School is a public three year middle school located in Cupertino, CA, USA recently opened in 2005. The school was named after Sam H. Lawson, founder of many events and groups in the city of Cupertino, including the Tournament of Bands, the Cupertino Lions Club and the Cupertino Historical Society.
In 2006, the students were mainly composed of students from Collins Elementary School, Lincoln Elementary School, Garden Gate Elementary School, and Eaton Elementary School, along with other students from schools in the CUSD. The school colors include maroon and silver. Lawson's mascot is the lightning bolt. Their principal is former Eaton Elementary principal, Cici O'Donnell and Mike Cellini is vice principal. Amanda Fried is Lawson's counselor. In its first year, Lawson had approximately 800 students. During the first year, Lawson only had sixth and seventh graders. Now in its second year, Lawson has about 900 students. This year, Lawson is composed of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students. Lawson feeds into Cupertino High School. Lawson takes the pride of getting in 5th place in the API scores of year 2006-2007 in all of California. However, in its district, Lawson is one of the highest scoring schools just barely passing Miller Middle School in the API test of the 2006-2007 school year. Lawson has consistently scored relatively high in all of the STAR tests so far.
[edit] After School Sports
Lawson After School Sports
Lawson has had great success in sports. At the volleyball finals, Lawson would have won, but Kennedy Middle School had the referee on their side. In the 2 years Lawson has existed, none of their sports teams have ever won in the finals. Lawson has teams in the following sports: soccer, basketball, wrestling, tennis, and softball. They also have Cross Country and Track and Field teams.
[edit] Daily Life at Lawson
Lawson is actually the biggest school in the Cupertino School District in terms of size and population. The student count is over 900 and one of Lawson students' biggest problems are the lengthy lunch lines they have to wait in. Each school day consists of six 50 minute periods each one covering the basic subjects: math, science, social studies, language arts, physical fitness, and an elective class of the students preference.
[edit] Demographics
Lawson Middle school consists mostly of Asians and Caucasians. There is an Asian majority in Lawson and the population of African Americans are down to approx 3%.
